Generally, designing lightweight and thin-walled structures with high mechanical performance is one of the challenging issues for mechanical and civil engineering sciences. Mechanical strain can be used to tune the optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (1L-TMDs). Here, up conversion photoluminescence (UPL) from 1L-WSe2 flakes is tuned with biaxial strain induced by cruciform bending and indentation method. It is found that the peak position of UPL is redshifted by around 24 nm as the applied biaxial strain increases from 0% to 0.51%. At the same time, the UPL intensity increases exponentially for the up-conversion energy difference that lies within a broad range between −157 meV to −37 meV. The growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates efficient thermal management of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), especially NMC 523 cells. This thesis investigates thermal runaway (TR) mechanisms and evaluates cooling strategies to mitigate overheating risks. Using ANSYS Fluent, the TR of four cells in series was simulated and validated with Jun Wu et al.'s experimental data, achieving an error margin below 10%. Peak temperatures reached 1,126°C in the first cell, with delayed propagation in adjacent cells. Sensitivity analysis of voltage, current, and state of charge (SOC) under varying C-rates was performed using a multi-scale multi-domain (MSMD) battery model. A logarithmic voltage …

Introduction: Cataract surgery permanently alters the mechanical environment of the lens capsule by placing a hole in the anterior portion and implanting an intraocular lens (IOL) that has a very different geometry from the native lens. The mass accommodation coefficient (MAC), a parameter that quantifies the possibility of a phase change to occur at a liquid-vapor interface, can strongly affect the evaporation and condensation rates at a liquid surface. Due to the various challenges in experimental determination of the MAC, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been widely used to study the MAC on liquid surfaces with no impurities or contaminations. This article analyzes the results of changes to the working parts of a cotton cleaning unit from small and large impurities. It is known that the UXK installation uses continuous cleaning technology, that is, the cotton entering the purifier is cleaned in all its cleaning sections and then transferred to another process. In these sections, pieces of cotton wool from the separated waste are regenerated in a separate drum. Existing purifier suppliers use a manually operated mechanical system to monitor its performance. The stiffness of the extracellular matrix induces differential tension within integrin-based adhesions. However, it has been unclear if the stiffness-dependent differential tension is induced solely by myosin activity. Here, we report that in the absence of myosin contractility, 3T3 fibroblasts still transmit stiffness-dependent differential levels of traction. This myosin-independent differential traction is regulated by polymerizing actin assisted by actin nucleators Arp2/3 and formin where formin has stronger contribution than Arp2/3. This study presents the three-dimensional (3-D) numerical analysis of the influence of the plate obstacle installed at the entrance of the long flanged diffuser on the simple Savonius rotor performance by ANSYS 2022 R1. In the beginning, the 3-D numerical model is validated using the sst k-ω turbulence model with the previous published experimental results at the same conditions, and they are in good agreement with each other. Photocatalytic oxidizing (PCO) air cleaners are offered for the abatement of gaseous pollutants (i.e., Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs). However, due to a lack of testing standards, the overall characterization of the technology's effectiveness has been met with conflicting results. Different studies use varying experimental setups, test conditions, and different PCO air cleaner designs. The stick-fixed pitch maneuver point is an important measure of aircraft longitudinal dynamic response and handling quality characteristics, and includes effects of both aerodynamic and inertia properties of the aircraft about the pitch axis. In the present work, the existence of stick-fixed roll and yaw maneuver points is demonstrated, which are determined from the lateral forces, moments, and inertial properties of the aircraft. These stick-fixed roll and yaw maneuver points are directly related to the predicted lateral handling qualities. While yes-associated protein (YAP) is now recognized as a potent mechanosensitive transcriptional regulator to affect cell growth and differentiation including the osteogenic transcription of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), most studies have reported the YAP mechanosensing of static mechanophysical cues such as substrate stiffness. We tested MSC response to dynamic loading, i.e., cyclic mechanical stretching, and assessed YAP mechanosensing and resultant MSC osteogenesis. We showed that cyclic stretching at 10% strain and 1 Hz frequency triggered YAP nuclear import in MSCs. Transportation departments have made significant strides in addressing the challenges posed by the increasing weights of trucks on bridges. While there is a growing awareness of overheight vehicle collisions with bridges, implementing effective countermeasures remains limited. The susceptibility of bridges to damage from such collisions is on the rise, further exacerbated by unpredictable lateral impact forces. This study employs nonlinear impact analysis to assess the response of an unprotected vehicle-girder model, yielding realistic deformation outcomes comparable to observed impacts on the US-61 bridge. Reduced order methods using spectral representations show promise in facilitating and accelerating heat transfer analyses. This paper proposes a taxonomy for reduced order methods, classifying a method as reduced order compression, modelling, or analysis. The performance of bases formed with analytical and empirical eigenfunctions are compared for representative reduced order tasks. The Akaike Information Criterion is applied in a novel way to compare the performance of these bases. The present study finds that both bases are parsimonious for reduced order compression tasks. Patients who are suffering from neuromuscular disorders or injuries that impair motor control need to undergo rehabilitation to regain mobility. Gait training is commonly prescribed to patients to regain muscle memory. Automated-walking training devices were created to aid this process; while these devices establish accurate ankle-path trajectories, the knee and hip movements are inaccurate. This study presents the results of a parabolic flight experiment to study the sloshing dynamics of the magneto-active propellant management device experiment. This device utilizes a magnetoactive membrane and magnets located external to the tank to effectively damp the liquid free surface motion. Most commercially available smartphones posed a challenge to consumers due to the use of adhesives, which not only served to seal out dust and water but also hindered repairability and hardware replacement. Drawing inspiration from successful smartwatch designs employing gaskets for water resistance, this project aimed to adapt such design principles to the smartphone form factor.
