Students at Central Washington University were faced with a challenge to engineer an RC Baja Car with a focus between drivetrain and chassis or suspension and steering for a competition. The different foci were split between two team members and the engineering for this report is focused on steering and suspension.
The suspension and steering components underwent the process of developing calculations for all individual parts for design. The design process included using CAD software to provide a 3D model for each individual part. To save time, 3D modeling software helped find fitment issues before the RC Car was manufactured …

The challenge given by NASA was to design and build a reusable payload capable of a human survivable landing, without the use of a parachute or streamer.
The method chosen to accomplish this was a large spring to extend and mitigate impact forces over a few seconds. The device was attached to the lower end of the payload to act as a secondary force reducer, with the primary device being the gyrocopter assembly built by Brycen. The problem presented throughout this report was to create a small-scale bridge made entirely out of balsa wood and glue, that could withstand substantial force, as well as perform a lifting/lowering cycle. Other requirements associated with the bridge were properties of weight, deflection, size, and shape. This problem presented a challenge that tested the mathematical side of engineering, being strongly reliant on statics, mechanics of materials, and mechanical design analyses.

The RC vehicle comprises 4 crucial subsystems: the chassis, drivetrain, suspension, and steering. This paper will cover the chassis and drivetrain, and my partner Noah Stevens will cover the suspension and steering. The chassis serves as a robust framework housing all vehicle components, while the drivetrain transmits power from the motor to the wheels, propelling the vehicle. An efficient drivetrain typically sacrifices speed for enhanced torque, aiming to minimize energy losses. Meanwhile, an ideal chassis features minimal deflection and user-friendly mounting points. These bridges are built according to their terrain and environment, while also withstanding the forces of objects going across them. This project explores building a bridge under specific design restrictions to be able to simulate objects traversing across and under it. The device consists of a bridge, utilizing a Pratt truss design, and an articulation tower which are mechanically linked using a hinge. The JCATI Carbon Fiber Recycler shreds, transports, and bakes carbon fiber within its system to recycle it by burning off the resin within the material at temperatures over 500 Celsius. The conveyance portion of the recycler, as it stood in previous iterations, has not been able to transport then batch the shredded material before going into the oven. Doing so would introduce more system independence without the need for someone to manually collect the shredded batches from the conveyor belt.

On-the-go unloading improves harvest operational efficiency, but it requires skilled labor because it is challenging and stressful to balance numerous concurrent tasks. Harvest automation reduces workload, stress, and fatigue. The objective of this study was to determine if using a commercially available, automated on-the-go unloading system (Raven Cart Automation TM , RCA, Raven Industries) would reduce operator stress com- pared to manual operation. Nine grain cart tractor operators and six combine operators participated in this study. ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 varistors are as essential today as they have been since their discovery five decades ago. Their role is to protect other electronic components against oncoming surges of electrons and survive. The demands on varistors are increasing. Electronic components are becoming smaller and more sensitive, and the metal oxides from which varistors are made are precious. Every aspect of their structure (macro, micro, nano and atomic) determines how they perform and survive. Each stage and variable within the powder metallurgy process is important. The mechanical methods in preparing nano and micro sized metal oxide powders are outlined in this chapter.

Dice are cursed or blessed; that is, they roll low or high, but they are never fair. They cannot be manufactured with uniform density and geometric precision. This is particularly true of 20-sided dice or D20s. Faces are smaller than 6-sided dice, and manufacturing tolerances are similar. However, some dice are fairer than others. In our studies of plastic-mold dice about 1 in 4 test fair in 3000 rolls. We have used different statistical tests, including chi-square, modified Kolmogorov Smirnov, and double binomial tests. Of these, the method that consistently performed better is the chi-square goodness of fit test. The …

The advancement of additive manufacturing technologies has opened new avenues for fabricating biocompatible and structurally functional bone tissue scaffolds, essential in treating osseous fractures, defects, and diseases. This research aims to develop mechanically strong, dimensionally precise, and patient-specific porous bone tissue scaffolds that provide both structural integrity and biological functionality. Swift Heavy Ions (SHI) irradiation, characterized by high kinetic energy ions, induces significant material/structural modification, e.g., latent track. However, the intricate interaction among various physics, i.e., mechanical stress, phase transition, and heat transfer, has been ignored in the continuum-based approaches in favor of simplicity. Here, we developed a two-dimensional coupled phase-field inelastic-thermal spike (PF-iTS) model to investigate the effect of thermal crosstalk, elastic energy, and irradiation flux on latent track formation. While the emulator embedded neural network has been shown to provide accurate predictions with suitable emulators, there is still a challenge regarding how to select the optimal hyperparameters of network architectures, such as, the number of neurons, layers, types of activation functions, etc. The selection of hyperparameters greatly affects the performance of the neural network model training both in terms of accuracy and efficiency. An accurate representation of cellular mechanobiology necessitates the inclusion of subcellular elements characterized by minute masses and dimensions. These minute objects yield multiscale dynamic models with disproportionate terms, which require inordinate amounts of computational time to simulate. The computational requirements limit the time span of the simulation to time histories shorter than one second, even when employing supercomputers. As data centers evolve to support increasing server densities, the inadequacies of traditional air cooling in managing thermal loads have become evident. This is primarily due to an increased demand for powerful CPU and GPU-based platforms that can run Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) workloads amongst others. Consequently, single-phase immersion cooling has gained prominence as an efficient, sustainable alternative, significantly reducing operational costs and energy consumption. The escalating demand for computing power in hyperscale data centers necessitates innovative cooling solutions to enhance energy efficiency and ensure sustainable operations. Direct-to-chip liquid cooling has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional air-cooling methods, offering improved thermal management and reduced energy consumption. This dissertation explores a comprehensive approach to commissioning direct-to-chip liquid cooling systems in hyperscale data centers by integrating experimental analyses and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques.
