Criticality Safety Evaluation To Address Potential Over Conservative Restrictions In 49 Cfr Fissile Materials – Exceptions, Avian Blumhorst
Criticality Safety Evaluation To Address Potential Over Conservative Restrictions In 49 Cfr Fissile Materials – Exceptions, Avian Blumhorst
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The U. S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) 49 CFR 173.453 Fissile Exceptions provide a regulatory classification that helps eliminate burdensome regulatory requirements. The current fissile exceptions are based on past technical basis reviews. These reviews may be overly conservative, and the final ruling potentially applied significant administrative over-conservatism. This thesis reviewed and presents several recommendations to the fissile exception criteria, as well as 49 CFR 173.453 section’s additions.
Using Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code version 6.3.0, several infinite sea mixtures and array systems were modeled for fissile isotopes 233U and 235U. The research demonstrated that for fissile exception (a) there …

Computational Study Of Cavitation In An Inducer Pump, Jaylen Leonard
Computational Study Of Cavitation In An Inducer Pump, Jaylen Leonard
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Cavitation is ubiquitous in liquid-handling turbomachines. Cavitation bubbles form when the local pressure drops below a fluid’s vapor pressure, and their subsequent collapse causes implosions that generate shockwaves and microjets. These effects lead to fluid instability and structural damage to the blades and casing in turbomachines. This thesis investigates this cavitation phenomenon in turbomachines using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The cavitation model built in ANSYS Fluent® is first validated in a venturi tube model and then applied to an inducer pump. The geometry of the pump is derived from the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) Low Pressure Oxidizer Pump (LPOP) …

Mechanically Cost-Effective Approach For Bipedal Walking In Robots Using Instantaneous Collision Angle, Smit R. Patel
Mechanically Cost-Effective Approach For Bipedal Walking In Robots Using Instantaneous Collision Angle, Smit R. Patel
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Humans, as bipedal locomotors, are effective at reducing the mechanical cost of transport (CoTmech) by adopting movement strategies and gaits that minimize energy expenditure for a given distance. By using different gaits at different speeds, leveraging their long spring-like tendons and muscle elasticity which store and release energy during movement, humans reduce the mechanical effort required for locomotion. Current locomotion solutions offered in bipedal robots, based on legacy walking and running gait models, are not great at energy efficiency unless walking at very low speeds. Additionally, the control system of robots, designed to ensure stability and adaptability, requires substantial resources, …

Alteration Of Peripheral Cytokines In Alzheimer’S Disease, Zhengshi Yang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with the clinical symptoms of gradual cognitive decline and memory loss. Biologically, abnormal accumulation of Aβ (Aβ) plaque and tau tangles in the brain are the core pathological hallmarks in AD. Although inflammatory response is not specific to AD, emerging evidence suggests that the disrupted innate immune system within the central nervous system, particularly microglial activation, might act as the bridge linking Aβ aggregation to pathological phosphorylation and aggregation of tau. The inflammatory response was suggested to initially have a neuroprotective role of attempting to clear Aβ plaques, and then become neurotoxic …

Reproducible Research Data Pipelines – Case Study Of Bubble Collapse In Subcooled Nucleate Pool Boiling, Blake Naccarato
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Vapor bubble collapse is relevant to the study of subcooled nucleate boiling, as can occur in power plants and missile systems, in studies of wear due to cavitation, and even in the study of hydrothermal vents in the Earth sciences. Empirical correlations relate the rate of bubble collapse to thermal conditions of the subcooled fluid, and one may choose to produce a purpose built correlation for any process. However, they are time and resource intensive due to the data and process requirements for automated bubble tracking. A reproducible research data pipeline has been developed to discriminate between existing correlations for …

This was based on the two types of testing: push and pull testing …
Investigative Research On Design Parameters And Criticality Models For Microreactors, Cameron Jensen
Investigative Research On Design Parameters And Criticality Models For Microreactors, Cameron Jensen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
With increased energy demand and the desire to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, nuclear power will need to play a prominent role in achieving carbon-free energy independence. Large nuclear reactors are necessary to meet this objective. However, they are expensive and take a long time to build. For remote locations (e.g., military bases) and smaller communities, large nuclear reactors would not be feasible or cost effective. Small reactors (microreactors) can fill this necessary gap. These reactors would be factory-built, delivered quickly, and operated with high intrinsic levels of safety. With microreactors still in conceptual and testing states, there is a …

Predicting The Response Of An Underactuated, 3d Printed Prosthetic Hand, Lucas Gallup
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The continuing need for hand prostheses has led to incredible developments in this area. However, due to the cost of the most sophisticated models, it is vital to develop simpler, low-cost, underactuated prostheses that can be produced rapidly. 3D printing is an important tool to achieve this goal. In particular, the 3D printed Flexy-Hand 2 has been one of the most common low-cost designs. A key feature of the Flexy-Hand 2 is its use of tendons and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) for joints that are strong and flexible. TPUs, however, lack a thorough understanding of their mechanical behavior, which makes it …

Development Of Pre-Magnetized Magnetorheological Elastomer For Bidirectionally Variable Stiffness Applications, Choonghan Lee
Development Of Pre-Magnetized Magnetorheological Elastomer For Bidirectionally Variable Stiffness Applications, Choonghan Lee
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) utilize magnetic forces between ferromagnetic particles to cause variable stiffness properties and damping with external magnetic fields. In the MREs, the particles are embedded in a cured elastomer matrix, and an external magnetic field makes the stiffness change due to induced magnetic forces among particles. A disadvantage of the conventional MREs is that they cannot be softened (reduced stiffness) under an external magnetic field. Considering that there are many engineering applications where fast changes of stiffness in both directions (stiffening and softening) are required, embedding magnetically biased particles in the MRE can provide potential solutions. In this …

Water scarcity is a global issue affecting billions of people, and atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology has been identified as a potential solution. However, existing single-material AWH approaches have limited water harvesting yields due to alternated water capture, storage, and release stages, and only function within a high relative humidity range. In my doctoral research project, we developed a bio-inspired, hydrogel-based multi-layer AWH approach that allows for segregated capture, storage, and release stages, and is envisioned to have higher daily water harvesting efficiency even in low-humidity areas. My research began with understanding the relations between hydrogel mechanical stiffness, hydraulic permeability, …
