A Systematic Review Of Alkali-Treated Polylactic Acid Biocomposites Relevant To Pineapple Leaf And Water Hyacinth Hybrid Design, Muhammad Rizky Adrianto Subandi, Tri Hartutuk Ningsih, Hanna Zakiyya

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

The increasing demand for sustainable materials has accelerated the development of biodegradable polymer composites. Polylactic acid (PLA)-based natural fiber composites have attracted significant attention due to their renewable characteristics; however, their performance remains limited by weak fiber–matrix compatibility, moisture sensitivity, and inconsistent interfacial behavior. Alkali treatment has been widely applied to modify lignocellulosic fibers by removing non-cellulosic components and improving surface characteristics, although its effectiveness remains dependent on treatment conditions and fiber properties. This systematic review evaluates the influence of alkali treatment on PLA-based natural fiber composites and assesses the available evidence supporting future pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) and water …

Thermal Performance Analysis And Heat Transfer Characteristics Of A Solar Powered Paddy Dryer Using A Flat Plate Solar Collector, Peter Sahupala, Daniel Parenden

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

Freshly harvested paddy holds much water (23.00% wet basis in this study) and spoils quickly without prompt drying. Open sun drying depends on the weather and heats the grain unevenly. This study tested an indirect solar paddy dryer with a 0.60 m² flat plate collector, a 10 kg capacity, and natural convection airflow in Merauke, South Papua. Six thermocouples (collector, drying chamber, and chimney), a pyranometer, and a moisture meter recorded data every 15 minutes at drying temperatures of 40°C, 50°C, and 60°C. The data gave useful heat energy, collector thermal efficiency, and drying rate. Useful heat energy ranged from …

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

Water-powered funicular railways are an environmentally friendly mode of transport whose efficiency heavily depends on the principle of gravity. However, their operation is vulnerable to natural wind disturbances that can hinder speed or cause a risk of overturning on steep, curved tracks. This study aims to analyse the influence of funicular car model design on the rolling moment exerted on the rails as the car turns to enter a track branch. The research methodology involves aerodynamic simulations using SolidWorks flow simulation, comparing three body models: WAHYUDI, FUNAERO, and AEROFUN. Simulations were conducted with variations in turn angles (10° to 30°) …

Synthesis Of Fe-Doped Porous Carbon Catalyst Derived From Coconut Shell Waste Using Ferric Nitrate Nonahydrate (Fe(No3)3.9h2o) As An Iron Precursor, Ilham Lestadi Putra, Sukarni Sukarni, Heru Suryanto

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

Renewable energy from lignocellulosic biomass is a promising alternative to fossil fuels. Coconut shell (CS) waste is a favorable precursor for porous carbon due to its high carbon content, abundance, and non-food nature. However, conventional biochar often has limited surface area and catalytic active sites, hindering its effectiveness as a catalyst. While Fe-based modifications are promising, the use of ferric nitrate-assisted activation of coconut-shell-derived porous carbon remains underexplored. This research focused on developing an Fe-doped porous carbon catalyst from CS via ultrasound-assisted impregnation, followed by activation in a tube furnace. CS biochar was produced through pyrolysis at 550 °C and …

Thermal Degradation Analysis Of Bagasse Fibers From Sugarcane Waste, Rashmitha Suresh, Faisal Al Nasser

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

Sugarcane is one of the important commodities in the industry where bagasse fiber as waste is abundantly available.   Sugarcane bagasse fiber has high cellulose, a key element in the utilization of bagasse. Chemical pretreatment is important to prepare the natural fiber before used as composite reinforcement. The purpose of the study is to analyze the thermal degradation of bagasse fiber after being treated using NaOH and TEMPO solution. The manufacturing method was carried out by a series of washing bagasse with distilled water and NaOH solution, subsequently soaking it in 6% NaOH and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-l-oxyl (TEMPO) solution, and conducted oven-dried. Thermogravimetric …

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

The use of ethanol-blended fuel in a standard vehicle can reduce combustion quality, which has an impact on decreasing vehicle performance. At the above 20% blend level, it affects vehicle performance and requires adjustments to engine settings or the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) before use on conventional engines. This study investigates the effect of aftermarket ECU settings on the performance of a 150 cc motorcycle operating on a gasoline-ethanol blend. Four fuel variations were tested: Pertalite (P100), revvo 90 (R100), and 30% ethanol blends (PE30 and RE30). This study analyzes the effects of optimizing injection duration and ignition timing settings …

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

Bolster is one of the bogie's components that receives direct loading from the car body and freight movement. One of the problems that occurs in the bolster is permanent deflection during vertical and transversal static loading. Therefore, a static loading test is required to evaluate the structural strength of the bolster. During the static loading test, a rig is required to hold the bolster so that the bolster is in a fixed position. The rig owned by PT. INKA (Persero) showed a plastic deformation at the vertical center plate load (VCP 5.22P). Therefore, a modified design of the rig is …

Thin films of MnO2 were successfully deposited onto Si substrates using the magnetron sputtering technique in various gas atmospheres and deposition times to study their influence on the structural, morphological, electrical, and electrochemical properties for application as supercapacitor electrodes. Structural analysis using XRD showed that deposition under an Ar+O2 gas atmosphere increased the crystallite size and crystallinity of the Si/MnO2 films, while shorter deposition times reduced the crystallite size and lowered the crystallinity. Surface morphology observation using SEM showed that the film deposited in an Ar+O2 gas atmosphere had smaller, more uniform, evenly distributed, and closely …

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

In this study, a Computational Fluid Dynamics method is used to investigate the oil–water separation kinetics in a dual-port inlet cyclone separator. This was achieved using the Reynolds Stress Model coupled to an Eulerian multiphase framework. Three Reynolds numbers were studied (Re = 1.41×10⁵, 1.94×10⁵ and 2.52×10⁵) to analyse the flow; axial velocity distribution, vortex stability, radial migration velocity and separation efficiency were examined individually. Results indicate that both the radial migration velocity (vᵣ) and separation probability (premove) grow with Reynolds number, especially for larger oil droplets (10–100 µm). The best condition concerned is that …
