Cosmetic Clamper Mechanical Engineering Senior Project was a senior project at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in the College of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Department. The project ran from September 2025 to June 2026. The project developed the Cosmetic Clamper device, an accessibility product designed to help individuals with unilateral upper extremity motor deficits open, use, and close cosmetic containers independently.

Buell motorcycle riders, including our sponsor Rick Lasko, need a way to easily and affordably manufacture and replace their swing arms with extended versions (4”, 8”, 12”, and 16”) that maintain the stock Buell aesthetic while also meeting the safety standards required for performance-intensive applications, such as drag racing. Each extended swing arm must be just as safe, strong, and rigid as the original swing arm. This thesis reviews the mechanical engineering capstone project that designed a winch proximity sensor for WARN Industries. WARN is very interested in developing this product for market as a safety and ease-of-use accessory, and working with Portland State University was the first step in this process. A group of four mechanical engineering and four electrical engineering capstone students collaborated to research sensor types, test the selected methods, and design and build a prototype. This engineering project, sponsored by Crandall Stats and Sensors, focuses on improving the ability to test product performance under controlled environmental conditions by designing a portable humidity chamber capable of maintaining a stable relative humidity between 20 and 80 percent with a tolerance of ±0.5 percent. Consistent humidity is crucial for evaluating how moisture influences material properties, product reliability, and long-term durability in real production environments. For my senior design project, I am redesigning the moving stage for the vacuum pin-on-disk test used in the Akron Engineering Tribology Lab. This system is used to evaluate bearings and lubricants for aerospace applications under controlled vacuum conditions. Many amateur astronomers seek to capture long exposure images of the stars, planets, and galaxies with commercially available sky tracking telescope mounts. The Baja SAE competition mimics real world engineering problems where teams of students design and build off-road vehicles that can handle tough, rough terrain. The investigation began with research and a market analysis on current lamp designs and a discussion about what features would set the lamp apart. Snowmobile tow bars are devices used to rigidly connect two snowmobiles, such that a disabled snowmobile can be recovered from a remote location with a working snowmobile. These devices, however, are not widely used or readily available. An existing tow bar design was evaluated and redesigned to improve its structural capacity and performance. This evaluation provided a baseline to quantify improvement and included Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA), and Design for Assembly analysis (DFA). A study was completed on the application of mid-wave infrared (MW-IR) imaging for diagnostics in supersonic combustion exhaust flows, with the objective of enhancing optical access and measurement accuracy. Other optical based techniques of thermography require complicated setups and analysis to determine the temperature of a flow with high accuracy, where MW-IR is a more simplistic "point and shoot" technique. The simplicity of MW-IR comes with the trade off of gaining simplicity but adding uncertainty into the measurements. A variety of aerodynamic devices operate at low Reynolds number conditions, such as unmanned aerial vehicles and low-pressure turbines in gas turbine engines. At low Reynolds numbers, many airfoils experience laminar boundary layer separation as the fow lacks the energy to overcome the adverse pressure gradient. Researchers have documented a variety of methods which can suppress laminar separation, and now focus on ways to reduce energy requirements to provide efective fow control. Improving the ignition reliability in small-scale gas turbine engines is critical for safety aspects of auxiliary power units (APUs). To better understand the ignition characteristics of these small-scale combustors, an optically accessible combustor is designed and tested. The combustor accommodates twelve prevaporizer tubes (PVTs) in accordance with the commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) rendition and allows for interchangeable materials (quartz and Inconel) and igniter positions. Hafnium and titanium, along with zirconium, are refractory metals with unique properties suitable for extreme-environment applications. Utilizing alloys based on these elements can provide suitable materials with engineered properties. Understanding their mechanical properties is necessary to determine appropriate applications. This thesis research aims at employing quantum-based atomistic simulations to estimate mechanical properties of pristine hafnium, titanium and an alloy based on these elements. Additive Manufacturing (AM), particularly Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), has gained significant traction in fabricating complex, high-performance metallic components. However, the inherent complexity and computational cost of high-fidelity simulations pose challenges for real-time monitoring and optimization of multi-laser powder bed fusion processes. This study proposes a data-driven surrogate modeling approach using a deep learning architecture to efficiently and accurately predict three-dimensional temperature distributions during ML-PBF. This study investigates how various additive manufacturing (AM) technologies and parameters influence part quality by fabricating three uniquely designed artefacts. Artefact 1 is a rectangular block with stepped arches, thin and solid extruded features, and holes of varying shapes and sizes. Artefact 2 consists of a base plate with angled overhangs from 15 to 90 degrees. Artefact 3 includes a tall cylinder, a five-step cylinder, and two half arches of different scales. Laminar boundary layer separation can significantly degrade the efficiency of Low-Pressure Turbine (LPT) blades. While active flow control (AFC) methods can mitigate these losses, energy-efficient implementation requires activating the system only when performance decreases. This study validates an unsupervised machine learning framework that utilizes sparse, discrete surface-pressure measurements to distinguish between high and low aerodynamic loss states. A fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering model was trained on limited pressure data obtained in a low-speed linear cascade across Reynolds numbers from 30,000 to 160,000 and used to categorize the flow regime in real time. Traditional LPT designs, however, involve multiple stages and numerous blades, resulting in increased weight and manufacturing costs. Ultra-high-temperature ceramics, commonly used in aerospace applications, operate in high-temperature oxidizing environments where a surface scale forms and regulates oxy gen access. For hafnium diboride–silicon carbide (HfB2–SiC), that scale consists of a borosilicate glass layer over a porous HfO2 skeleton. Oxygen transport through this poros ity governs the kinetics of mechanistic models, requiring reproducible inputs for accurate pore fraction (PF), pore-size distributions, and ultimately tortuosity. This thesis replaces rule-based SEM thresholding with a convolutional neural network that segments pores and predicts the pore-radius distribution for transport models. Maera Williams is a sophomore in Environmental and Ecological Engineering at Purdue University. She joined the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) Urban Farming team as a freshman and now serves as project manager of ten undergraduate students collaborating with Jovial Family Farm to design and develop three indoor hydroponics systems for a laboratory space on their property in Broad Ripple, IN. Jovial Family Farm is a nonprofit organization founded by Drs.
