Electrolysis of molten mixtures of lead chloride and galena was carried out under various conditions of temperature, time, composition, and current densities; without a diaphram, and with various diaphrams. Continuous runs, with necessary additions of lead sulfide and lead chloride to maintain a melt of the proper composition, were attempted on a small scale.

Solders are not new alloys, since they were known in late Roman times when they were mentioned by Pliny. These solders differed very little from our modern ones. Tertiarium, consisting of one part of tin to two parts of lead, is known today as plumbers solder; and argentarium, consisting of equal parts of lend and tin, is still extensively used for many purposes.

"Until recently the only commercial method of producing metallic manganese in large ammounts sic was a pyrometallurgical process. Producing a metal of about 97% purity, it was not very satisfactory. "Users of refractories are constantly demanding a better product. There is a demand for a satisfactory neutral or basic refractory with a P.C.E. equivalent of cone 35 or better. A refractory with a very high alumina content would seem to solve this problem, however, the main difficulty has been to bond the unplastic alumina. From the literature it was learned that Lumnite cement has been satisfactory in the manufacture of a refractory concrete.
