This thesis focuses on the fabrication and comprehensive characterization of thin-film capacitors utilizing zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) as the dielectric material, placed between aluminum electrodes. The research primarily aims to examine the impact of varying ZrO2 film thickness and the effects of post-deposition annealing on the structural, morphological, and electrical properties of the capacitors. A controlled sputtering deposition technique was employed to ensure uniform film growth, maintaining consistency in thickness and material quality across all samples.

This study explores the change of the wetting characteristics of commercially availablepolyimide (PI), Kapton® HN, films a type of poly(4,4′-oxydiphenylene-pyromellitimide), following treatment with low-pressure plasmas of carbon tetrafluoride (CF4), air, hydrogen (H2), carbon-dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) gases as well as the surface texturing via laser-exposure procedure. The water contact angle (CA) and surface free energy (SFE) of untreated PI films were determined as 82.4°±0.8 and 45.0±0.3 mN/m, respectively. After CF4 plasma gas treatment, the CA value of PI films increased to 110.2°±1.0, while it decreased to 9.3°±2.3 after O2 plasma gas treatment. The surface free energy (SFE) of PI …

Fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) are increasingly being used for infrastructurestrengthening and repair of steel structures. Though there have been several durability studies, exposures used are not representative of outdoor service conditions. Fewer studies have explored the effect of changing outdoor conditions typical in infrastructure use. The goal of the research is addressing this gap by evaluating the performance of commercially available CFRP systems under natural weather characteristic of hot, humid tropical conditions mainly and cold weather secondary in three different locations.

The term “mass concrete” characterizes a specific concrete condition that typically requires unique considerations to mitigate extreme temperature effects on a structure. Mass concrete has historically been defined by the physical dimensions of a “mass”-ive concrete element with the intent of identifying when differential temperatures may induce early-onset cracking, leading to reduced service life. In this thesis, a novel sputter tool was restored and modified to deposit a ZnO film for future applications as a guiding layer on a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device. Some restorations and modifications included a water chiller being sized and added to the tool, leak checks to establish an ultra-high vacuum of 10-6 Torr, then finally heat lamps for temperature control were installed. Once modified, one of the preexisting magnetrons was utilized to deposit a ZnO via RF sputtering onto a quartz substrate. In this thesis, low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polydimethylsiloxane (silicone/PDMS) were treated with oxygen (O2) , air and carbon tetrafluoride (CF4) low pressure 13.56 MHz radiofrequency plasma. An experimental setup was used to determine process power and irradiation time for improved modification, the validation was done by measuring the contact angle of the treated samples immediately after treatment. Light aromatic hydrocarbons are an inevitable byproduct of fossil fuel extraction, refinement, distribution, and use. The four lightest and most prevalent of these are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, which are known collectively as BTEX. In spite of their chemical similarity these species have markedly different effects on human health and substantially different concentrations are permitted by OSHA in workplaces and by the EPA in ambient air and groundwater. Increasing the efficiency of catalysts that is applied in the industry can significantly reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Reverse water gas shift chemical looping (RWGS-CL) is a promising reaction to convert CO2 to CO. La0.5Ba0.5FeO3 (LBF) is a good candidate for RWGS-CL, which shows increased conversion yield when supported on silica. This is a two-part thesis with the overall investigation technique being electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In the first part, EIS is used to estimate the layer thickness of anodized aluminum oxide. This required the development of an appropriate electrical circuit model; that with parameters that correspond to physical properties of the oxide. In this work, it was found that for thicker oxides of which the outer porous layer is greater than 12 microns, impedance may be used to estimate the outer layer thickness. Magnetic thin films are important for technological applications such as giant magnetoresistance,spin valves and magnetic tunnel junctions. A key feature for these applications to be possible is the interface between two materials. Optoelectronics focuses on the application of electronic devices that utilize forms of electromagnetic radiation including visible light and other wavelengths including ultraviolet and infrared. Optoelectronics typically include devices that emit light and detect light. Devices created using this technology include light-emitting diodes, laser diodes, photoresistors, photodiodes, solar cells, phototransistors, and fiber optics. Fiber optic interconnects are interesting devices in that they are used in conjunction with optoelectronic devices to transmit information between individual optoelectronic components.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) geomembranes were treated with air and oxygen plasma. The purpose of air and oxygen plasma treatment of geomembrane surface is to increase the surface wettability of these materials, thereby increasing adhesive properties. Increasing adhesive properties enables a surface to be coated with a desired material with antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV resistant characteristics, without changing bulk material properties. To protect the geomembranes from oxidation degradation, UV degradation and biological degradation, it is important to increase the antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV resistant properties of geomembrane.
