Investigations Of Carbon Dioxide Storage In Low-Temperature Reservoirs For Non-Leaking Storage, Md Nahin Mahmood
Investigations Of Carbon Dioxide Storage In Low-Temperature Reservoirs For Non-Leaking Storage, Md Nahin Mahmood
Doctoral Dissertations
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) injection into subsea or low-temperature water zones has emerged as a promising strategy for long-term, non-leaking CO₂ storage through the formation of solid hydrates. This research investigates CO₂ injection into Berea sandstone cores saturated with water under simulated subsea conditions, focusing on hydrate formation behavior across varying temperatures, pressures, and injection flow rates. Experimental results demonstrate that CO₂ hydrate formation under dynamic (flowing) conditions occurs at significantly higher pressure compared to static conditions reported previously. At temperatures ranging from 0 °C to 5 °C, dynamic hydrate formation pressures were observed to be approximately double. This can be …

Mitigating Surfactant-Gas Interactions In Associated Gas Reservoirs: A Simulation And Machine Learning Guided Approach, Francis Dela Nuetor
Masters Theses
Surfactant flooding is a promising chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method for mobilizing residual oil through interfacial tension reduction and wettability alteration. However, its performance in associated-gas reservoirs can be limited by salinity, gas composition, surfactant adsorption, and possible chemical instability. This study investigates the effect of salinity on surfactant flooding efficiency using an integrated reservoir simulation and machine learning workflow. A synthetic three-dimensional reservoir model was developed in ECLIPSE using a 10 × 10 × 3 Cartesian grid to simulate surfactant flooding over a 300-day production period under salinity conditions ranging from 100 to 50,000 ppm. Key outputs, including …

CO₂ Water Alternating Gas flooding has become an important enhanced oil recovery process in increasing oil production in medium to heavy oil reservoirs. However, CO₂ injections have the potential to cause asphaltene destabilization, leading to precipitation, deposition, and pore plugging. This study evaluated and optimized the effect of CO₂ flooding parameters to maximize oil recovery and minimized formation damage. Eclipse 300 compositional reservoir simulator was used to assess the effect of CO₂ Water Alternating Gas (WAG) Injection Rate, WAG Ratio, and CO₂ Water Alternating Gas (WAG) Injection Pressure on the reservoir. Predictive models for Cumulative Oil Production (FOPT) and Asphaltene …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the pursuit of carbon neutrality, the CO2-enhanced oil recovery provides dual benefits by enabling both carbon sequestration and incremental oil production. However, its application is limited by high minimum miscibility pressure. CO2-philic and oil-affinitive surfactants have emerged as an effective, low-dosage, and cost-efficient strategy to reduce the minimum miscibility pressure. In this study, macroscopic phase behavior experiments combined with molecular dynamics simulations were employed to systematically elucidate the influence of multiester-head surfactants on CO2–oil miscibility. Using a modified pressure–volume–temperature apparatus equipped with optical power monitoring, we determined that multiester-head surfactants reduced the first-contact …

Utilization Of Commercial Phosphonium And Ammonium Ionic Liquids In Enhanced Oil Recovery Of Carbonate Reservoirs, Nada Berrandjia
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Despite advancements in renewable energy, oil and gas still dominate global energy supply, while a substantial portion of original oil in place (OOIP) remains unrecovered through conventional recovery methods. One of the most effective approaches used to mobilize residual oil is chemical enhanced oil recovery (CEOR) through mechanisms such as reduction of interfacial tension (IFT), alteration of wettability, emulsification, and improved displacement efficiency. Recently, ionic liquids (ILs) have gained interest as alternative CEOR agents due to their tunable structure and superior stability under harsh reservoir conditions. This thesis experimentally investigates the potential of low-cost and commercially available ILs for enhanced …

Technical science and innovation
This study addresses the mathematical modelling and optimisation of a reactor for the esterification of safflower oil with n-butyl alcohol. To improve process controllability and reduce the need for numerous pilot-scale trials, an ideal-mixing continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) model was adopted. Incorporating reaction kinetics, the effect of contact time on the relative viscosity of the product mixture was analysed. The modelling results indicate that achieving an acceptable degree of feedstock conversion is difficult when a single ideal-mixing reactor is used. Therefore, a CSTR cascade was proposed, and the configuration with N = 2 reactors was selected as the most appropriate …

Effect Of Ionic Strength On Gelation Time And Strength Of Amps-Based Polymer Gels, Maryam Sharifi Paroushi, Xuyang Tian, Baojun Bai, Thomas P. Schuman, Yin Zhang, Mingzhen Wei
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Polymer gel treatment has been widely applied for improving sweep efficiency and controlling excessive water and gas production. Their performance depends on gelation time and final gel strength. In most studies, brine salinity is used to describe the effect of formation water on gel behavior. However, changing salinity also changes ionic strength and ion composition at the same time. Because of this coupling, it is difficult to identify the mechanisms controlling gelation, which has led to inconsistent trends in the literature. Increasing salinity has been reported to either slow or accelerate gelation and to weaken or strengthen gels depending on …

Controlling CO2 channeling in heterogeneous reservoirs remains a major challenge for both enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and secure geological storage. AMPS-HPAM copolymers exhibit high-temperature resistance and brine tolerance compared with conventional HPAM gels, making them well suited for the harsh environments associated with CO2 injection. Chromium-based crosslinkers (CrAc and CrCl3) were investigated because sulfonic acid groups in AMPS can coordinate with trivalent chromium ions, enabling dual ionic crosslinking and the formation of a robust gel network. While organic crosslinked AMPS-HPAM gels have been widely studied, the behavior of chromium-crosslinked AMPS-containing systems, particularly their gelation kinetics under …

Surfactant-enhanced spontaneous imbibition is a proven method of enhancing oil recovery from shale reservoirs. However, a significant knowledge gap concerning the impact of clay minerals on surfactant-enhanced imbibition in shale reservoirs remains. Therefore, this study first analyzed the mineral composition and pore structure of the shale reservoirs. Subsequently, three surfactants were selected for spontaneous imbibition experiments. The influence of various clay minerals on the surfactant imbibition was assessed by considering various properties of the imbibition system. The results showed that the shale pores primarily consisted of macropores (44.03%) and mesopores (43.94%). Surfactants enhance the imbibition recovery by altering the wettability …

Detecting Electrical Submersible Pump (Esp) Failures And Estimating Run Life Using Artificial Neural Networks, Mostafa Ahmed Sobhy
Theses and Dissertations
Electric Submersible Pumps (ESPs) are one of the important artificial lift methods for sustaining production in mature and high-water-cut wells; but may suffer frequent failures due to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, chemical, and operational failures. These failures can yield substantial deferred production and intervention costs. Plenty of ESP installations are fitted with downhole sensors. Yet, it is observed that the current industry practice underutilizes the wealth of available sensor and operational data and lacks standardized, explainable failure-type identification and classification.
In this thesis, a comprehensive Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) framework was introduced for ESPs that simultaneously estimates remaining …

The future of major aquifer systems supporting irrigated agriculture is threatened due to unsustainable groundwater pumping. Metering of pumping is key for implementing robust groundwater management, but metering is limited in most aquifers. Although machine learning methods have been used to estimate pumping over certain regions, these studies have not fully demonstrated the data quantity and input parameter requirements to accurately estimate regional groundwater pumping. This study determined the data quantity required and identified relevant features to develop Random Forests-based annual groundwater pumping estimates (2008–2020) over the Kansas High Plains aquifer. We predicted pumping at two spatial scales, i.e., point …
