The hazard to the ecosystem caused by rubber microparticles generated from tire abrasion has been a constant concern. Therefore, to protect this ecosystem, the development of a tire tread with high abrasion resistance is especially significant. Herein, γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was used to modify graphene oxide (GO) and silica (SiO2) to obtain GO and SiO2 with positive charges (NG and NS). Furthermore, NG and NS were electrostatically self-assembled by using maleic anhydride (MAH) hydrolysis, thereby obtaining composite particles (NG-NS) with “bridged structures”. Also, the NG-NS/styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds possessing fine dispersion of NG-NS were prepared by the aqueous compounding method. …

Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are smart materials whose mechanical properties can quickly respond to changes in the external magnetic field. This phenomenon is known as the magnetorheological (MR) effect and is the key to the application of magnetorheological elastomers. Previous studies have found that the interface between magnetic particles and elastomers is a critical factor that influencing the MR effect of MREs. To improve the interfacial interaction between silicone rubber (SR) and carbonyl iron (CI) particles, in the MREs considered in this work, CI particles were subjected to surface modification through polydopamine (PDA) deposition and n-dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS) grafting. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy …

Development Of A Vascularized Osteogenic Implant Using Fused Glycosaminoglycan-Chitosan Microcapsules, Charles Michael Gabrion

Wayne State University Theses

Osteoarthritis remains a poorly treatable outcome of traumatic cartilage injury as cartilage is unable to self-repair. Unfortunately, roughly 10% of all adults in the United States have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis although the true fraction is likely at least 30%. While the main focus of osteoarthritis research has been on treating damage to the cartilage, osteoarthritis will also lead to damage to the adjacent trabecular bone due to wear via shearing down of the tissue’s surface. Considering this, in conjuncture with transplanted cartilages’ inability to integrate into the native tissue, unlike the surrounding bone, the significance of a combined osteochondral …

Shape Memory Polymer Based On Copolybenzoxazines: Effects Of Chain Length Of Aliphatic Monoamines On Shape Memory Performance, Attachai Sriwattana

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research was successful in completely synthesizing benzoxazine copolymers for shape memory polymers (SMPs) by mixing bisphenol A-aniline (BA-a) and bisphenol A-aliphatic monoamines of various chain lengths (BA-aMAs). Our studies have shown that shorter chain lengths will provide higher crosslinking densities, which play an important role in promoting the stiffness of the polymer, resulting in a higher shape-fixity ratio (Rf). While longer chains result in a lower crosslinking density and a larger free volume, thus promoting a higher shape-recovery ratio (Rr), Therefore, selecting the appropriate aliphatic monoamine chain length is crucial. From the study of this work, it was found …

Sustainable Toughening Of Polylactic Acid With Ultra-Fine Fully Vulcanized Powdered Natural Rubber, Reza Gholami

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study investigated the sustainable toughening of polylactic acid (PLA) by incorporating ultra-fine fully vulcanized powdered natural rubber graft-copolymerized with poly-styrene-co-acrylonitrile (UFPNR-SAN). We investigated the effect of the styrene-to-acrylonitrile ratio (ST:AN) used during the grafting process on the final UFPNR-SAN compatibility with PLA. The ST:AN ratio was systematically varied during the grafting reaction to prepare UFPNR-SAN with a range of different surface energies. The ST:AN ratio of 4:1 resulted in higher compatibility of UFPNR-SAN with the PLA matrix among other ratios. This could be explained by the desirable interfacial interactions and better dispersion shown by the contact angle measurements and …

Methyl Isobutyrate Production Via Hydrogenation Of Methyl Methacrylate Derived From Pyrolysis Of Acrylic Plastic Waste, Ramzi Nasser Ahmed Saif

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

According to zero waste and upcycling policy, this work aims to utilize waste polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to methyl isobutyrate (MIB) via hydrogenation over nickel (Ni) based catalysts supported on commercial zeolites: HY, H-Beta-27 (SiO2/Al2O3 = 27 by mole), H-Beta-40 (SiO2/Al2O3 = 40 by mole) and H-ZSM-5. The appropriate catalyst support was first screen by using MMA monomer as the substrate for hydrogenation. Under 30 bar initial H2 pressure (PH2) at 250 °C for 3 h, Ni/H-Beta-27 catalyst effectively promoted hydrogenation to achieve 85% MMA conversion with 56.2 wt% MIB yield because of its larger external surface area and pore size. …

Silica thin films with vertically aligned, well ordered, and accessible pores were synthesized via the evaporation-induced …

Attrition Study Of Copper-Supplemented Iron-Based Oxygen Carrier For Chemical Looping Combustion, Neng Huang Jan 2023

Attrition Study Of Copper-Supplemented Iron-Based Oxygen Carrier For Chemical Looping Combustion, Neng Huang

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a promising technology that can mitigate the carbon emissions for power generation. The cost of oxygen carriers (OCs) impedes the scale up of CLC. Compared to synthetic iron-based OCs, red mud (RM), an abundant iron-based solid waste from industry, is a cost-effective choice due to its intrinsic inclusion of both inert and catalytic phases that are crucial for CLC. It was anticipated that the addition of copper oxide to RM using a mechanical mixing method that can be easily scaled up would enhance both reactivity and oxygen transport capacity (OTC), and the heat of reaction …

Investigation Of Mechanical Regulation On Stat3 Activity And Mmp Production, Jaxson R. Libby

Honors Theses and Capstones

Transcription factor, STAT3, is inappropriately expressed in cancer cells, and has contrasting activation in 2D versus 3D microenvironments. 2D plates are often used for drug screening and do not always recapitulate in vivo responses. To combat inaccurate 2D drug studies, a 3D hydrogel was created to support the growth of cancer cells into a tumor-like environment. The hydrogel consists of a biocompatible dextran homopolysaccharide, cell adhesion RGD sequences, and crosslinker MMP labile peptides. A pH dependent reaction couples the RGD sequences to dextran then the polymers are crosslinked into a gel. Crosslinking is accomplished using terminal cysteine peptide sequences, allowing …

Analyzing Spatio-Temporal Mechanisms Of Land Subsidence In The Parowan Valley, Utah, Usa, Jiawei Li, Ryan G. Smith, Katherine R. Grote

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Parowan Valley, Utah (USA), is an agricultural region experiencing rapid subsidence due to extensive groundwater extraction from aquifers with a significant portion of fine-grained sediments. To analyze the subsidence spatio-temporally, time-series Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) of 155 Sentinel-1 C-band scenes were processed. These data showed approximately 30 cm of ground subsidence in Parowan Valley from 2014 to 2020. Because of the high temporal sampling rate of the Sentinel-1 satellite (12-day cycle), it is possible to determine the seasonal changes of ground deformation and relate this to groundwater extraction. To better understand the relationship between ground deformation and groundwater extraction …

Insights To Surfactant Huff-Puff Design In Carbonate Reservoirs Based On Machine Learning Modeling, Ya Yao, Yue Qiu, Yue Cui, Mingzhen Wei, Baojun Bai

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Surfactants could react with adsorbates on carbonate rock surface to alter wettability from oil-wetness to water-wetness, which is effective to enhance oil recovery. Surfactant huff-puff treatment is mostly applied for this purpose and the resulting surfactant performance is the outcome of complex interfacial processes. Currently, the effect of important parameters on surfactant performance is not completely reported and the contribution of each parameter to surfactant performance is hard to be quantified. Traditional methods to optimize surfactant performance are time-consuming and show strong dependency on extensive experiments. in this paper, we address these problems from machine learning (ML) perspectives. Several ML …

Impact Of Composition And Salinity On Swelling And Gel Strength Of Poly (Acrylamide-Co-Acrylic Acid) Preformed Particle Gel, Ahmed Ben Ali, Reem Elaf, Mohammed Saad, Ibnelwaleed A. Hussein, Baojun Bai

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of various material compositions and reservoir environments on the ultimate strength and swelling kinetics of a commercial preformed particle gel (PPG) have been investigated. This study used different ratios of acrylamide and acrylic acid copolymers with a specific crosslinker concentration. Results have indicated that increasing the acrylic acid proportion enhances the PPGs' ability to swell but weakens their network structure. In contrast, increasing the crosslinker content decreases the swelling ratio and increases the gel strength. The highest equilibrium swelling capacity among the six preformed particle gel samples was obtained for PPG2, which has the highest acrylic acid amount …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The relationship between processing parameters, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Al-8.3Fe-1.3V-1.8Si alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion is seldom studied. Therefore, fully dense alloys with two parameters were selected to investigate this key issue. The results show that the alloy with low power and scanning speed (S200) shows fan-shell-shaped melt pools and laser tracks while another (S350) shows a deeper and wider melt pool. Both alloys obtain a heterogeneous microstructure without a secondary phase in melt pool (MP) and a nano-sized phase in melt pool boundary (MPB). The difference between solid-solution strengthening and Orowan strengthening in MP and MPB …

Role Of Air Staging In A Batch-Type Fixed Bed Biomass Combustor Under Constant Primary Air, Awais Junejo, Yasir M. Al-Abdeli, Jacobo Porteiro

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Staged combustion of biomass is the most suitable thermo-chemical conversion for achieving lower gaseous emissions and higher fuel conversion rates. In a staged fixed bed combustion of biomass, combustion air is supplied in two stages. In the first stage, primary air is provided below the fuel, whereas in the later stage, secondary air is supplied in the freeboard region. The available literature on the effects of air staging (secondary air location) at a constant primary air flow rate on combustion characteristics in a batch-type fixed bed combustor is limited and hence warrants further investigations. This study resolves the effect of …
