Structural Self-Shadowing And Its Effects On The Thermal-Structural Behavior Of Orbiting Trusses, Jack Mahaney

The determination of structural shadowing is described. The computation of environmental heat loads for slender structural members in earth orbit is described, and two methods for finite element thermal analysis are described . The effects of self-shadowing on the thermal structural behavior of single truss members and two different trusses are presented. In each case the shadowing produces a noticeable effect on the temperature distributions on truss members, and on the deformations of the trusses.

The problem of finding the optimal cross-sectional shape of the elastic cage in wind tunnel balance is formulated and solved numerically. A mathematical model to implement the boundary condition associated with the elastic rigid connection into the finite element method is discussed. Numerical results show that the rigid connection at the end of the elastic cage has significant effect on the stress distribution.
The finite dimensional approach for a three dimensional design sensitivity analysis is derived. Using both the free and rigid boundary conditions, numerical examples are performed and comparisons of the accuracy of design sensitivity analysis between the proposed …

In the reported experiments, plasma polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), perfluoro-2-butyl-tetrahydrofuran (PFBTHF), ethylene, and styrene were investigated in various combinations of monomer flow rates and discharge wattages for the substrate temperature range of minus 50 to 80 degree C. The polymer deposition rates can be generally expressed by k//o equals Ae** minus **b**t, where k//o is the specific deposition rate given by k//o equals (deposition rate)/(mass flow rate of monomer), A is the preexponential factor representing the extrapolated value of k//o at zero absolute temperature, and b is the temperature-dependence coefficient. Using affine transformations and suitably recasting the buckling vibration differential equations, the eigenvalue problem of anti-symmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminated rectangular plates has been reduced to a function of two strong material constants, the generalized rigidity ratio, whose range is in the closed interval from 0 to 1, and the ratio of principal lamina stiffness. With the reduction in number of constants an exhaustive parameter study of buckling and vibration solution trends, is possible. The buckling coefficients decrease with decreasing value of generalized rigidity ratio for both antisymmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminates. For a given aspect ratio, and …

This paper presents results of a numerical study of the effect of wall temperature control on the low speed aerodynamic drag of axisymmetric bodies at turbulent Reynolds numbers and zero angle of attack.
Results for both skin-friction and pressure drag were computed for slender bodies using first-order viscous-inviscid interaction theory. Computations using boundary-layer theory were conducted to evaluate the effect of wall heat transfer on bluff-body separation control. Wall heat transfer with 100 percent surface coverage (for all bodies) as well as some partial surface coverage cases were investigated. On-orbit spacecraft servicing for military programs is examined. The military community appears to be somewhat reticent to embrace or, in some cases, to even consider on-orbit servicing. The civilian community appears enthusiastic about the potential of on-orbit servicing and the majority of economic studies of civilian missions show servicing strategies to be an attractive alternative to most expendable spacecraft strategies. A model called SATSERV is presented. This model can be used to conduct economic comparisons from an overall standpoint between expendable and servicing strategies. The small disturbance potential flow theory is applied to determine the lift of an airfoil in a nonuniform parallel stream. The given stream is replaced by an equivalent stream with a certain number of velocity discontinuities, and the influence of these discontinuities is obtained by the method of images. Next, this method is extended to the problem of an airfoil in a nonuniform stream of smooth velocity profile. This model allows perturbation velocity potential in a rotational undisturbed stream. A comparison of these results with numerical solutions of Euler equations indicates that, although approximate, the present method provides useful information …

The aerodynamic characteristics of potential flow past an axisymmetric slender body and a thin airfoil are calculated by using a uniform perturbation analysis method. The method is based on the superposition of potentials of point singularities distributed inside the body. The strength distribution satisfies a linear integral equation by enforcing the flow tangency condition on the surface of the body. The complete uniform asymptotic expansion of its solution is obtained with respect to the slenderness ratio by modifying and adapting an existing technique. Friction factors for fully-developed flow in triangular ducts with fins of various sizes are investigated for Reynolds numbers ranging from 150 to 90,000. Two triangular ducts having apex angles of 60 and 38.8 degrees are studied. Results are presented in the form of standard plots of friction factor as a function of Reynolds number. Friction factor values for the smooth triangular-duct cases are in good agreement with the existing results. For the finned-duct cases, the fully developed axial-velocity profiles in laminar flow are determined by solving the x-momentum equation iteratively by the Gauss-Seidel finite difference technique. A circular thrust augmenting ejector has an annular wall which defines a central passageway and a convergent contoured inlet section, a constant area cylindrical mixing section and a divergent conical diffuser outlet section. The inlet, mixing and outlet sections merge one into the next in axisymmetric serial relationship. Generalized root-loci techniques, developed in the mid 70's for squirrel cage motors, have been extended in the static Scherbius configuration to wound rotor, slip energy, recovery systems. This arrangement is now applied to large power drives in the 0.5 to 50 MW range. In this paper, general results applicable to all machines are presented for the open-loop control scheme, but only the sub synchronous mode of operation in which a voltage source type inverter is used is addressed. Optimal linear smoothing theory is applied to the data from the Speed of Sound record attempt of a three-wheeled rocket car on 17 December 1979. A forward-backward estimation method is used which employs a seven state forward-running extended Kalman filter and a Meditch-form backward recursive 'fixed-interval' smoothing algorithm. Data for this analysis is supplied by a longitudinal accelerometer mounted on the vehicle and tracking radar measurements of range, azimuth, and elevation. States of interest include two components of vehicle position and velocity, accelerometer time-correlated error, and radar range and azimuth bias errors. Toupin's version of the Saint-Venant principle in linear elasticity is generalized to the case of linear elasticity with microstructure. That is, it is shown that, for a straight prismatic bar made of an isotropic linear elastic material with microstructure and loaded by a self-equilibrated force system at one end only, the strain energy stored in the portion of the bar which is beyond a distance s from the loaded end decreases exponentially with the distance s. © 1983 Martinus Nijhoff Publishers.

A finite element approach for efficient thermal-structural analysis of structures with thermal protection systems (TPS) is described. The approach is applied to Space Shuttle wing structure configurations subjected to reentry heating. New two and three-dimensional finite elements are developed to model heat transfer in the TPS and supporting structure. A typical TPS/Structural element predicts transient nonlinear temperature variations through the TPS thickness and detailed structural temperatures at the TPS/Structure interface. The accuracy of the TPS/Structure approach in two and three-dimensions is evaluated by comparisons with the conventional approach for various configurations of the wing structure. A Finite-Difference method is presented for calculating steady quasi-axisymmetric flow of an incompressible fluid at large Reynolds number. Approximations of the boundary-layer type are employed to reduce the Navier-Stokes equations to a pair of non-linear parabolic equations. Along with the governing equations, initial conditions are specified at some upstream cross section and boundary conditions are specified at the axis of symmetry and on the outer bounding surface.

A new operating approach for a previously existing rotary singulator was developed which improves the versatility of the device. This was accomplished by the implementation of a modular mechanism that performed the basic functions of agitation, gating, pocket formation, and exit, all inherent in this type of singulation device.

The Use of a Differential Mobility Analyzer to Perform Aerosol Size Spectrum Measurements Requires an Inversion Method to Go from the Measured Sensor Responses to the Desired Size Spectrum Information. Here We Present a Linear Inversion Method that Can Be Run on a Microcomputer or a Small Minicomputer. It Does Not Use Some of the Approximations Made in the Techniques Currently Available and Hence Gives Better Inversion Accuracy. the Method Shows Good Immunity to Both Random and Systematic Experimental Error. We apply Floquet theory to the problem of designing a control system for a satellite in an unstable periodic orbit. Expansion about a periodic orbit produces a time periodic linear system, which is augmented by a time periodic control term. We show that this can be done such that a) the application of control produces only inertial accelerations, b) positive real Poincare exponents are shifted into the left half-plane, and c) the shift of the exponent is linear with control gain. We apply these developments to an unstable orbit near the Earth-Moon L3 point perturbed by the Sun. Finally, …

An approach is developed for non-catastrophic control component failure accommodation for large space structures. Reliability is considered for both the control configuration (i.e., selecting actuator locations over an admissible set) and the ultimate operation of the system. The approach presented is to construct a measure of performance that indicates the absolute goal of the system, and for a given structural design, to determine the lowest achievable cost conditional upon the failure states of the system (i.e., which actuators are operational). A experimental investigation of the interaction of a twodimensional sonic jet injected transversely into a confined main flow has been conducted. The main flow consisted of air at a Mach number of 2.9. The effects of varying the jet parameters on the flow field were examined using surface pressure and composition data. Also, the downstream flow field was examined using static pressure, pitot pressure, and composition profile data. "Aerodynamic characteristics of a dual wing aircraft were analyzed with variations in airfoil sections and chord ratios over existing equal chard ratio dual wing and monoplane aircraft designs. Two- and three-dimensional aerodynamic studies were conducted to find the wing geometry which would create the minimum cruise drag. The two-dimensional aerodynamic data was obtained from a multi-element inviscid vortex panel program coupled to a momentum integral boundary layer program to account for the aerodynamic coupling between the wings. To Measure Size Distributions of Sub micrometer Aerosols with an Electrical Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA) Requires an Inversion Procedure. the Knutson (1976) and the Hoppel (1978) Inversion Procedures Were Numerically Investigated for the Case of Log-Normal Aerosol Size Distributions.
