Mechanical Performance Of Equilateral Triangular Lattices: The Role Of Nodal Fillets, Fakhreddin Emami, Andrew J. Gross

Triangular lattices are widely employed for their high strength to weight ratios, yet their mechanical performance is sensitive to geometric features, particularly the nodal geometry. This study investigates the influence of nodal geometry on the mechanical behavior of equilateral triangular lattices across a broad range of relative densities using high fidelity finite element simulations. We characterize the elastic properties, and strength limits as functions of fillet radius. Our results confirm the expected trend that, in stretching-dominated lattices with low relative density, the introduction of fillets reduces both stiffness and buckling resistance. Cost efficient, spatially resolved water quality monitoring is essential for managing pollution and protecting aquatic ecosystems. This study presents a low-cost (approximately USD 200), open-source, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-deployable in situ sensor node for real-time assessment of surface-water conditions. The system integrates sensors for pH, turbidity, temperature, and total dissolved solids (TDSs), with onboard data logging and real-time clock (RTC) synchronization. Bench validation of the sensor package yielded mean absolute percentage errors of 1.34% for pH, 5.23% for TDS, and 0.81% for temperature, and the device operated continuously for 42 h. Large, complex chemical kinetic models have long since been limited by the computational cost it takes to evaluate said model. Over time many reduction methods have been developed to combat this computational cost. However, very little has been done towards evaluating the limitations of reductions as a way of understanding the original model’s characteristics. Extended Twin-Engine Operations (ETOPS) certification ensures safe trans-oceanic operation of transport category aircraft. A critical aspect of ETOPS certification is compliance with ditching regulations. The importance of ditching analysis has grown significantly and come under greater scrutiny because of the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ incident. For transport category aircraft certified under 14 CFR 25 regulations, compliance with ditching requirements, rests on two major components. First, demonstrating acceptable aircraft dynamic behavior during the ditching event and second, ensuring the airframe can withstand the loads generated because of water impact.

This work presents a camera system for estimating surface currents. A combined camera and IMU system provide high resolution images and high precision orientation information, respectively. This eliminates the need for leveling and enables forward looking operation. The hardware stack includes a Lucid Vision Triton TRT162S monochrome camera, an SBG Ellipse D with dual antenna GNSS for precise pose, and an Nvidia Jetson Orin for acquisition and processing. The Ellipse D provides a hardware trigger at 10 Hz to time stamp each frame and to synchronize images with inertial measurements.

Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) has been a topic of immense interest as an effective technique/tool for hazardous aqueous waste disposal. SCWO can be achieved by introducing an oxidizer (e.g., H2O2), or a hydrothermal flame as an internal source of both heat and oxidizer species in an aqueous environment at conditions above the critical point of water (P > 218 atm and T > 647 K). This paper presents a novel path planning method for real-time robotic path planning in a dynamic environment involving moving obstacles. It combines on a holistic platform a global approach to rapidly generate initial paths of prominent diversity and a heuristic approach to enable local path refinement for enhanced computational efficiency, exploration, and robustness. The current large scale application of thermoset composite materials in large, twin aisle, civil transport aircraft have resulted in significant performance enhancements, such as aerodynamic efficiency, weight reduction, and durability. Preferential vaporization of isolated single droplets was evaluated in this study. A previously verified lab-scale experiment using flow acceleration to counteract the effects of buoyancy in a converging channel with a decreasing cross section was utilized to investigate the single isolated droplet combustion. The previous experimentation revealed differences between results and values predicted by a one-dimensional numerical simulation. To investigate if the observed differences were the result of turbulent flow and the development of a boundary layer within the channel, a model was designed and analyzed in Ansys Fluent.

The favorable strength to weight ratios, as well as the increased resistance to fatigue and corrosion, compared to metallic structures, provide a common argument for further research and development of composite airframes. This thesis presents a framework for an artificial neural network (ANN) model-based nonlinear model predictive control of mobile ground robots. A computer vision analysis module was first developed to extract quantitative position information from onboard camera feed with respect to a prescribed path. Transverse ballistic impact onto these fibers results in complex multiaxial deformation modes such as axial tension, axial compression, transverse compression, and transverse shear. This paper investigates the state consistence of parametric data-driven reduced order models (ROMs) in a state-space form obtained by various system identification methods, including autoregressive exogenous (ARX) and subspace identification (N4SID), for aeroelastic analysis in varying flight conditions. The target flight envelop is first partitioned into discrete grid points, on each of which an aerodynamic ROM is constructed using system identification to capture the dependence of the generalized aerodynamic force on the generalized displacement of structural modes. Process planning represents an essential stage of the Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) workflow. It develops useful and efficient machine processes based upon the working material, composite design, and manufacturing resources. The current state of process planning requires a high degree of interaction from the process planner and could greatly benefit from increased automation. Therefore, a list of key steps and functions are created to identify the more difficult and time-consuming phases of process planning.
