Experimental-Motion-Driven Cfd Investigation Of Slosh Dynamics In Propellant Tanks Of Spacecraft And Launch Vehicles, Priyanshu Savaliya
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Liquid sloshing in partially filled propellant tanks can generate transient forces and moments that affect spacecraft and launch vehicle stability, guidance, and control. This research develops a one-way experimental-to-Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) integration framework to investigate free-surface slosh behavior under realistic excitation conditions.
The overarching goal of this thesis is to develop and evaluate a one-way experimental-motion-driven computational framework for predicting liquid slosh response in a partially filled cylindrical tank. Rather than relying on idealized sinusoidal inputs, this work uses experimentally measured actuator-feedback motion as the prescribed excitation for high-fidelity CFD. The central objective is to establish the experimental and …

Thermoacoustic Effects Of A Variable Equivalence Ratio In A Single Element Methane Combustor, Carter Green
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Combustion instability is one of the leading factors in limiting the progress and innovations of liquid rocket engines and power plants. Under certain operating conditions, unsteady heat release and acoustic wave interactions can couple and lead to instabilities, such as self-sustaining pressure oscillations, that can lead to reduced combustor performance and potentially hardware damage. In this project, the thermoacoustic effects of controlling the equivalence ratio of a single-element natural gas combustor were modeled and analyzed. The project used Fidelity Pointwise for meshing, ANSYS Fluent for modeling, ERAU VEGA HPC for computing, and MATLAB for acoustic analysis. A numerical model of …

Influence Of The Sst K-Ω Stress-Limiter Coefficient On Transonic Shock Buffet Prediction For The Oat15a Supercritical Airfoil, Melinawo Vowotor
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Transonic shock buffet predictions using the Shear Stress Transport (SST) k–ω turbulence model are known to be sensitive to the stress-limiter coefficient a₁, yet no systematic investigation of this sensitivity exists. This thesis presents a parametric study of a₁ for two-dimensional URANS simulation of shock buffet on the OAT15A supercritical airfoil at M = 0.73 and Re = 3 × 10⁶. Eleven a₁ values (0.25–0.37) are examined at α = 3.5°, and a matrix of five a₁ values across five angles of attack (3.0°–3.9°) maps the interaction with incidence. The results reveal that a₁ acts as a bifurcation parameter: a …
Design And Analysis Of Energy Recovery Methods For Reduced Aircraft Emissions, Joshua C. Hauck
Design And Analysis Of Energy Recovery Methods For Reduced Aircraft Emissions, Joshua C. Hauck
Honors Theses
Aircraft flights are an increasingly popular mode of transportation. However, their harmful impacts on the environment are a growing concern. Many engineers have worked to develop fully electric aircraft to address this issue. Although they are much more sustainable than conventional aircraft, electric aircraft encounter severe limitations imposed by current battery technology. One alternative route engineers have taken is developing energy recovery methods (ERMs). These are marketed as devices that reduce aircraft fuel consumption without significantly changing their structure and functionality, making them an excellent short-term solution. However, there is little to no consideration of the tradeoffs induced by the …

Validation Studies Of A Dynamic Hybrid Rans-Les Turbulence Modeling Strategy For Cfd Simulation Of Gas Turbine Component Film Cooling, Cole Simmonds
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Computational prediction of the flow physics associated with gas turbine film cooling is important for ensuring effective heat transfer design. These flow fields are highly turbulent and anisotropic, making the accuracy and efficiency of the chosen turbulence model an important aspect of performing high quality computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based analysis. Current industry standard Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models such as RANS k-ω SST, while computationally efficient, are subject to relatively high levels of uncertainty in their ability to predict these turbulent flow fields. In contrast, high fidelity methods such as Large Eddy Simulation (LES) are computationally very expensive, while …

Journal of Engineering Research
This study evaluates seven cyclone designs to enhance pressure drop and collection efficiency (CE), using the conventional cyclone as a baseline. While the conventional design is efficient in particle collection, it experiences significant energy losses due to high values of pressure drops. This study introduces exit diffusers with various configurations—A, B, C, D, E, and F—to improve cyclone performance. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to analyse the pressure drop, tangential velocity, and static pressure at different levels of each cyclone. The findings reveal that cyclone D achieves a 41.1% reduction in pressure drop but at the cost …

Development Of On-The-Fly Quasi-Steady State Approximation For Chemical Kinetics In Cfd, Abhinav Balamurugan
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This study analyzes the feasibility of On-The-Fly Quasi-Steady-State Approximation (OTF-QSSA) application for solving chemical kinetics within Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, aiming to reduce the computational demand of detailed mechanisms. An algorithm that dynamically identifies and designates Quasi-Steady-State (QSS) species at specific grid locations and instances during the simulation was developed. With this information, our method pseudo-delays the advancement of concentrations for these QSS species—effectively setting their rate of concentration change to zero for a set number iteration before updating using the detailed mechanism and thereby omitting the computationally intensive processes typically required for their calculation during those skipped iteration. …

An Optimization Procedure To Design Nozzle Contours For Hypersonic Wind Tunnels, Omar Antonio Dominguez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Supersonic wind tunnels allow scientists and researchers to evaluate and analyze the behaviors of objects under real-life conditions when subjected to supersonic speeds. One of the main complexities when building a wind tunnel is the design of the convergent-divergent nozzle that is used to produce high-speed and high-quality flows. To achieve supersonic speeds, this nozzle adopts a specialized approach that incorporates the complexities of flow compressibility. The compressible effect is accurately evaluated using isentropic relations, allowing for precise determination of stagnation pressure and temperature, and static pressure and temperature relevant to the desired Mach number. Isentropic equations used to define …

Coupled Boundary Conditions For Modeling Airbreathing Engines, Adam Louis Waldemarson
Master's Theses
Modeling the flight conditions of an aircraft that utilizes an airbreathing propulsion system necessitates a method to account for the increase in energy introduced into the flow. Current methods for modeling engines either assign fixed conditions on flat faces on the intake and exhaust through a manual process with the use of external models or attempt to model the flow through the engine within the simulation using complex and computationally expensive geometry and solvers. The method presented attempts to provide an intermediate option to model airbreathing engines through coupling the intake and exhaust boundary conditions with a parametric engine model. …

Numerical Study Of Owls’ Leading-Edge Serrations, Asif Shahriar Nafi
Numerical Study Of Owls’ Leading-Edge Serrations, Asif Shahriar Nafi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The silent flight ability of owls is often attributed to their unique wing morphology and its interaction with their wingbeat kinematics. Among these distinctive morphological features, leading-edge serrations stand out – these are rigid, miniature, hook-like patterns located at the leading edge of the primary feathers of their wings. It had been hypothesized that these leading-edge serrations serve as a passive flow control mechanism, influencing the aerodynamic performance and potentially affecting the boundary layer development over the wing, subsequently influencing wake flow dynamics. Despite being the subject of research spanning multiple decades, a consensus regarding the aerodynamic mechanisms underpinning owls’ …

A Numerical Analysis Of Shock Angles From Inward Turning Axisymmetric Flows, William L. Hilal
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Detonation-based propulsion systems are known for their high efficiency and energy release when compared to deflagrative systems, making them an ideal candidate in hypersonic propulsion applications. One such engine is the Oblique Detonation Wave (ODW) engine, which has a similar architecture to traditional scramjets but shortens the combustor and isolator to an anchored ODW after fuel injection.
Previous research has focused on using a two-dimensional wedge to induce an ODW while limiting total losses through the combustor. In this configuration, a two-dimensional wedge-based architecture entails a rectangular duct, limiting potential inlet design and increasing overall skin friction. However, an inward-turning …

On The Simulation Of Supersonic Flame Holder Cavities With Openfoam, Zachary Chapman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the next major advancements in the aerospace industry will be hypersonic flight. However, to achieve hypersonic flight, propulsion systems capable of reaching hypersonic speeds need to be developed. One of the more promising hypersonic propulsion systems is the scramjet engine, however, several problems still need to be explored before reliable scramjet engines can be produced, the biggest being keeping the engine ignited. This has led to the use of flame holder cavities to create a region of subsonic flow within the engine to allow combustion to occur. High experimental costs make the use of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) …

To evaluate the effects of spallation on ablative material, it is necessary to evaluate the mass loss. To do so, a Lagrangian particle trajectory code is used to reconstruct trajectories that match the experimental data for all kinematic parameters. The results from spallation experiments conducted at the NASA HYMETS facility over a wedge sample were used. A data-driven adaptive methodology was used to adapts the ejection parameters until the numerical trajectory matches the experimental data. The preliminary reconstruction results show that the size of the particles seemed to be correlated with the location of the ejection event. The size of …
