The high-latitude and subauroral ionosphere regions are organized and disorganized by a number of competing processes of ionization, convective transport, and plasma instabilities. The complexity makes it difficult for physics-based models or data-assimilation methodologies to specify the ionosphere with sufficient resolution and accuracy to adequately support radio signal technologies during space weather disturbance events. External drivers of ionospheric ionization include solar EUV and X-ray irradiance, medium and energetic particle precipitation, and solar proton events. External drivers of plasma transport include convective electric fields for high density plasma at mid-latitudes (e.g., storm enhanced densities or SEDs) and parallel plasma motion driven …

A Time-Domain Boundary Integral Equation For Moving Acoustic Sources In Uniform Flow And Its Solution By An Advanced Time Propagation Approach, Fang Q. Hu, Douglas M. Nark Jan 2025

A Time-Domain Boundary Integral Equation For Moving Acoustic Sources In Uniform Flow And Its Solution By An Advanced Time Propagation Approach, Fang Q. Hu, Douglas M. Nark

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper presents a time-domain boundary integral equation (TDBIE) formulation for predicting acoustic scattering from moving sources in a uniform mean flow. This work is motivated by the increasing need for accurate aeroacoustic modeling of modern aircraft configurations, including VTOL and eVTOL systems with rotating components. A key challenge in time-domain scattering simulations with moving sources is the determination of retarded time for a given observer time, which involves solving an implicit equation at each time step. This can be computationally costly, particularly for numerical solution of the TDBIE where every surface element on the scattering body acts as an …

Development Of A Design Tool For Tow-Steered Composite Structures With Machine Learning-Assisted Modeling, Bangde Liu Jan 2025

Development Of A Design Tool For Tow-Steered Composite Structures With Machine Learning-Assisted Modeling, Bangde Liu

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) are widely used in aerospace, automotive, and other engineering applications due to their lightweight characteristics and superior mechanical properties. Traditional FRCs employ a fixed fiber orientation in each layer, and while different layup sequences can tailor performance, the mechanical properties remain spatially uniform. Tow-steered composites, which enable fibers to follow curvilinear paths, offer the potential for spatially varying stiffness and strength, improving structural performance.

This dissertation addresses key challenges in modeling and designing tow-steered composite structures, including the lack of commercial design tools, the high computational cost of design optimization, and the need to efficiently evaluate manufacturing …

Ground handling delays at major airports pose significant challenges, impacting operational efficiency, airline schedules, and passenger satisfaction. This study explores the root causes of these delays, including resource constraints, operational inefficiencies, adverse weather, technical failures, and security issues. By examining case studies from major airports, the report identifies key solutions such as technology integration, infrastructure upgrades, staff training, standardized procedures, and enhanced communication systems. The findings underscore the importance of adopting proactive and collaborative approaches to optimize ground handling operations, ensuring smoother airport workflows and improved service delivery in the face of growing air traffic demands.

Proactive Distributed Emergency Response With Heterogeneous Tasks Allocation, Justice Darko, Hyoshin Park Jan 2025

Proactive Distributed Emergency Response With Heterogeneous Tasks Allocation, Justice Darko, Hyoshin Park

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Traditionally, traffic incident management (TIM) programs coordinate the deployment of emergency resources to immediate incident requests without accommodating the interdependencies on incident evolutions in the environment. However, ignoring these inherent interdependencies while making current deployment decisions is shortsighted, and the resulting naive deployment strategy can significantly worsen the overall incident delay impact on the network. The interdependencies on incident evolution in the environment, including those between incident occurrences and those between resource availability in near-future requests and the anticipated duration of the immediate incident request, should be considered through a look-ahead model when making current-stage deployment decisions. This study develops …

Electronic Propulsion Engines: Revolutionizing Space Travel, Isaiah Echeverria Jan 2025

Electronic Propulsion Engines: Revolutionizing Space Travel, Isaiah Echeverria

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Most spacecrafts rely on chemical propulsion to generate thrust and venture into the depths of outer space. They rely on principles from Newton’s three laws of motion, conservation of momentum-energy, and atomic physics. However, an electronic form of propulsion also exists providing spacecrafts an alternative opposed to the sole use of chemical energy. Electronic propulsion systems or engines last longer than current chemical spacecraft engines and are improving to produce greater amount of thrusts.

Comparing the two types of spacecraft engines shows the benefits and disadvantaged obtained by using either option as well as the main differences and similarities shared …

High-Speed Aircraft Stability And Control Metrics, Timothy T. Takahashi, Jack A. Griffin, Ramana Grandhi Jan 2025

High-Speed Aircraft Stability And Control Metrics, Timothy T. Takahashi, Jack A. Griffin, Ramana Grandhi

Faculty Publications

This review paper identifies key stability and control screening parameters needed to design low-risk, general-purpose high-speed aircraft. These derive from MIL-STD-8785C, MIL-STD-1797, and older AGARD reports, and are suitable for assessing conceptual high-speed vehicles. We demonstrate their applicability using published ground test, computation, and flight test data from the Bell X-2, North American X-15, Martin X-24A, Northrop HL-10, Lockheed Blackbird (YF-12/SR-71), and North American XB-70 as well as the Rockwell Space Shuttle Orbiter. The relative success of the X-15 and Blackbird and the performance limitations of the others indicate the need to scrutinize lateral-directional stability at the preliminary design phase. …

Dynamic Stability Test Technique For Blunt Bodies In A Magnetic Suspension And Balance System, Caleb Hull, Colin Britcher, Dave E. Cox, Mark Schoenenberger, Hisham M. Shehata

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Techniques for the measurement of subsonic dynamic stability derivatives of blunt-body re-entry capsules are being developed using a Magnetic Suspension and Balance System at NASA Langley Research Center. The measured aerodynamics of a 45-degree sphere-cone similar to configurations being considered for Mars Sample Return Earth Entry Vehicle are reported. A novel test method has been developed where forced oscillatory translation of a test article is used to excite yaw attitude oscillations. The forced motion is then halted to observe free-to-oscillate behavior of the test article. Parameter identification methods are used to extract static and dynamic yawing moment stability characteristics from …

Mass-Adaptive Admittance Control For Robotic Manipulators, Hossein Gholampour, Jonathon E. Slightam, Logan E. Beaver

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Handling objects with unknown or changing masses is a common challenge in robotics, often leading to errors or instability if the control system cannot adapt in realtime. In this paper, we present a novel approach that enables a six-degrees-of-freedom robotic manipulator to reliably follow waypoints while automatically estimating and compensating for unknown payload weight. Our method integrates an admittance control framework with a mass estimator, allowing the robot to dynamically update an excitation force to compensate for the payload mass. This strategy mitigates end-effector sagging and preserves stability when handling objects of unknown weights. We experimentally validated our approach in …

Optimal Manipulation Motion Action Planner Enabled By Physics Informed Neural Networks, Jonathon E. Slightam, Logan E. Beaver

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Autonomous robotic manipulation in unstructured environments faces many challenges and is hindered by capabilities that bridge the gap between perception and acting on the world. Action plans that are centric to object motion rather than end-of-arm tooling behavior may aid this. This paper presents an autonomous action planner for a feedback linearizeable system comprised of three base motions that can be leveraged on their own or in combination to give custom motion plans. The optimization routine for the three different types of motion are presented, which are integrated into physics informed neural networks. A component of this is the autonomy …
