Project In Choreography, Maura Murphy
Project In Choreography, Maura Murphy
Senior Scholar Papers
After researching the effects that Eastern philosophies and art forms have had on Western choreography, I noticed that those who implement the Eastern concepts of unity of body and mind produce dances which are more than phrases of movements strung together every eight counts.
As a dancer, I have a tendency to view many dances in terms of pointed feet, straight legs, and cohesiveness of ensemble work, as opposed to seeing the actual choreography. However, when watching video tapes of some "new wave" choreography by various artists interested in East Asia, I saw the dances as whole entities.

Chekhov And Friends: The Director's Role In A Work-In-Progress, Matthew S. Schliesman
Chekhov And Friends: The Director's Role In A Work-In-Progress, Matthew S. Schliesman
Theses
This MFA thesis by Matthew S. Schliesman, titled “Chekhov and Friends: The Director’s Role in a Work-in-Progress,” documents a creative reinterpretation of Anton Chekhov’s one-act plays The Bear and The Proposal through the lens of 20th-century television variety entertainment. Inspired by The Carol Burnett Show, Schliesman constructs a fictional Russian vaudeville performer—Karoltina Burnetskaya—whose variety show provides a narrative framework for the two Chekhov plays and additional material, including a musical number and an improvised short story adaptation. Set in 1906 Russia during a time of political unrest, the show blends period elements with modern theatrical conventions and humor, aiming …
Chapter Two: Process To Production, Roger Tackette
Chapter Two: Process To Production, Roger Tackette
Theses
This thesis documents the directorial process for a student-produced staging of Neil Simon’s play, Chapter Two. The project, directed by graduate student Roger Tackette, served as his culminating master's degree project for Lindenwood College's Performing Arts Department. It explores the multifaceted journey of a theatrical production, from initial concept to final performance.
The thesis delves into various aspects of the production, including pre-production work, which involved developing a conceptual basis for the play and analyzing the script using Francis Hodge's framework. The document details the audition process, casting decisions, and the five-step rehearsal method employed by the director. It …

Equus: A Case For Censorship?, Abe J. Bassett
Equus: A Case For Censorship?, Abe J. Bassett
Theatre Faculty Publications
This article focuses on the play "Equus," by Peter Shaffer. The consequences of the controversy included the introduction of a state law to limit presentation of plays with sexual conduct, the endangerment of a prestigious $150,000 award to the Department of Theatre Arts, and even the threat of reducing the University's budget. "Equus," is a gripping story of Alan Strang, a deeply troubled seventeen year old, who has inexplicably blinded six horses, and psychiatrist Martin Dysart, who seeks to relieve the boy of his extreme anguish and self-torture. All Wright State University acting majors are required to audition for every …
