Female character development in literature can be revolutionary, especially for protagonists that bend the rules and replace a socially-based image of classical femininity with their own gender non-conforming expressions. In Pants, Not Petticoats: Transgressive Female Characters in Literature, comparative analysis is used to study the non-conforming aspects of three gender rebels: Jo March from Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (1980 Illustrated Junior Library Edition), Scout Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (2002 First Perennial Classic Edition), and Eliza Sommers from Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende (2006 First Harper Perennial Edition). Bilingual story time programs found in local community libraries not only benefit children, they can also serve a need for L2 college students: the development of their communicative skills in an authentic environment. In addition to linguistic benefits, experiential learning has proven to prepare students for real-world skills, such as networking, mock professional experience and a sense of community engagement. This paper recounts how a world language story time program supports L2 learners’ three modes of communication, as articulated by ACTFL, and necessary for language development. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาการแปลบทร้อยกรองจากภาษาต่างประเทศเป็นภาษาไทย ซึ่งผู้วิจัยได้หยิบยกบทร้อยกรองอิสระจากหนังสือเรื่อง Ceremony ของ Leslie Marmon Silko มาเป็นกรณีศึกษา โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาทฤษฎีการแปลและแนวทางการแปลต่าง ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง ตลอดจนแนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทประเภทบทร้อยกรองอิสระซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นวรรณกรรมมุขปาฐะ ควบคู่ไปกับการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ วัฒนธรรม ภาษาถิ่นและความเชื่อของชนพื้นเมืองอเมริกันอินเดียน เพื่อให้สามารถแปลส่วนหนึ่งของตัวบทที่คัดสรรจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยได้อย่างเหมาะสม สำหรับแนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบท ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกใช้แนวทางการวิจารณ์วรรณกรรมอเมริกันร่วมสมัยผ่านมุมมองวรรณกรรมเชิงนิเวศ ของดารินทร์ ประดิษฐทัศนีย์ เพื่อวิเคราะห์ประเด็นปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม รวมถึงความสัมพันธ์ของมนุษย์และธรรมชาติที่ได้ถ่ายทอดผ่านเนื้อหาและกลวิธีการประพันธ์ นอกเหนือจากนั้น ผู้วิจัยยังได้ใช้ประยุกต์ใช้แนวทางการวิเคราะห์องค์ประกอบแปดประการของกวีนิพนธ์ ของจอห์น แมกเร เพื่อวิเคราะห์ลักษณะเฉพาะและรูปแบบการประพันธ์ของบทร้อยกรองแต่ละบท ในส่วนของแนวทางการถ่ายทอดบทร้อยกรองอิสระจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบตีความตามแนวทางการแปลกวีนิพนธ์ของอังเดร เลอเฟอแวร์ ควบคู่ไปกับการประยุกต์ใช้รูปแบบและลักษณะเฉพาะของวรรณกรรมมุขปาฐะที่พบในวัฒนธรรมไทย โดยมีจุดประสงค์ที่จะถ่ายทอดบทร้อยกรองอิสระซึ่งสามารถรักษาความหมายได้อย่างครบถ้วนและสามารถสร้างผลกระทบทางอารมณ์แก่ผู้อ่านได้อย่างทัดเทียมและสอดคล้องกับหน้าที่ของตัวบทต้นฉบับ

Queen Margaret of Anjou is a uniquely placed character in Shakespeare’s tetralogy beginning with I Henry VI. Margaret is the only female character to be featured in and survive all four plays. From her entrance in I Henry VI, she is a force to be reckoned with; she uses her femininity as a weapon, and as the Henry VI plays continue, her power grows. Her feminine prowess is demonstrated in several ways including her use of her beauty as well as her enchantment of both Suffolk and Henry. St. Roch Military Marches In Wallonia: Memory, Commemoration, And Identity, 1866-1940, Erik Hadley

Ritualized public processionals known as military saint marches thrive in popular memory and define local identity in Francophone Belgium (Wallonia). The annual processionals involve thousands of marchers dressed in Napoleonic-era military uniforms, carrying authentic muskets and escorting a statue of St. Roch, the patron saint of disease protection. Many of these marchers trace family participation through multiple generations and two St. Roch marches received UNESCO recognition as examples of “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2012. “That Kingdom Is Mine”: On Spain’S Early Modern Polemics Of Possession Over Jerusalem, Circa 1605, Chad Leahy

Spanish claims to the throne of Jerusalem in the early modern period have often been viewed in light either of royal mythologies connecting the Habsburgh monarchy to the biblical kings David and Solomon or to prophetic discourses of imperial Messianism relating to universal monarchy. This paper broadens our understanding of Spanish claims to Jerusalem through close reading of two archival documents produced in 1605. In defending Spanish preeminence and sovereignty in Jerusalem, I argue that these documents participate in a “polemics of possession” that crucially informed cultural production related to the Holy City in the period more broadly. Allusive Fontaines, Sicamors, And Pins: Figurative Prophecies Of Grail Piety In The Prose Lancelot, David S. King

At the conclusion of Chrétien de Troyes’s twelfth-century verse Chevalier de la charrete, a spring and sycamore allude to concupiscence and betrayal in Scripture, evoking the hero’s and the queen’s adulterous liaison. The author of the thirteenth-century French Prose Lancelot translates this allusion from a moment of joy for the queen to one of terror, foreshadowing a change in fortune for the hero and his prowess. Every subsequent adventure where the hero encounters a spring and sycamore points to his love for the queen as a source of corruption. Springs shaded by a pine tree hint at the sanctity of …

The Vanishing Lady: Mélusine, Emblems, And Jacques Yver’S Le Printemps D’Yver (1572), Joshua M. Blaylock

In the opening pages of Le Printemps d’Yver (1572), the narrator evokes Mélusine, the cursed half-snake fairy queen, as the architect of the idyllic castle that serves as the locus amoenus of the novella collection. And yet, as suddenly as she appears, Mélusine vanishes from the text with only one other explicit reference to her at the transition point between the third and fourth novellas. While literary scholars have analyzed the two explicit references to Mélusine in Le Printemps as well as Yver’s emblematic prose, none has systematically explored the possibility that her presence pervades the novella collection in ways …

Life Narratives As Technologies Of Self: Explorations Of Agency In A Son Of The Forest And The Autobiography Of Malcolm X, Tiffanie Kelley

In A Son of the Forest (1829) and The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965), the narrators describe their most formative experiences in relation to addiction and their respective religions. Though these narratives emerged at different periods (almost a century apart) in North American history, there are considerable similarities between them. As William Apess describes his struggle with alcoholism, he also appropriates both the language of popular literature and print culture in the Methodist movement, and in turn criticizes the white supremacist ideals ingrained in early American culture. Reflections Of An Impossible Ideal: Passion As The Will To Downfall In Madame Bovary, Christopher Ramponi

Broadly speaking, this thesis is an examination of passionate love: its qualities, its presentation, the ends to which it is employed, its paradoxical nature, and set of beliefs surrounding it—in short, the impossibility of it all. More narrowly, this thesis argues that in Madame Bovary, Flaubert attaches a specifically twelfth-century understanding of passion to Emma Bovary, one that is at the heart of troubadour lyric poetry. What is more, I argue that Emma finds in this vision of love, whose structure is built upon a Neoplatonist dialectic and expressed through a paradoxical antithesis, an Ideal—an ideal world, life, and …

One of the most interesting and controversial episodes in the history of the Négritude literary and philosophical movement came when two white, French authors prefaced the texts of two of the movement’s most significant authors. Jean-Paul Sartre’s “Orphée noir” is one of these texts in question, and it served as the preface for Léopold Sédar Senghor’s Anthologie de le nouvelle poésie nègre et malgache de langue française. In one sense, one might characterize Sartre as a friend to the Négritude movement, exposing it to the francophone mainstream and thereby helping it gain traction in Western academia. Alfred Prufrock” โดย ที.เอส. เอเลียต จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยได้ทำการศึกษาค้นคว้าเกี่ยวกับแนวคิดสมัยใหม่นิยมในบริบทของโลกตะวันตกและบทวิเคราะห์ต่าง ๆ เกี่ยวกับการประพันธ์กวีนิพนธ์ของที.เอส. เอเลียต เพื่อนำมาใช้เป็น แนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบท พร้อมทั้งศึกษาแนวคิดสมัยใหม่นิยมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการประพันธ์ กวีนิพนธ์ในประเทศไทย แนวทางการประพันธ์กวีนิพนธ์ของกวีไทยร่วมสมัย ตลอดจนทฤษฎีการแปลที่เกี่ยวข้อง ได้แก่ แนวทางการแปลกวีนิพนธ์ของฟรานซิส อาร์. โจนส์ (Francis R. Jones) รวมถึงแนวคิดเรื่องสัมพันธบท (Intertextuality) และกลวิธีการแปลของลอว์เรนซ์ เวนูติ (Lawrence Venuti) เพื่อนำมาใช้เป็นแนวทางในการแปลเพื่อถ่ายทอดความเป็นสมัยใหม่นิยมอันเป็นแนวคิดสำคัญของกวีนิพนธ์เรื่องนี้ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การแปลเพื่อถ่ายทอดความเป็นสมัยใหม่นิยมอันเป็นเป้าหมายหลักของสารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ ทำได้ด้วยการวิเคราะห์และสังเคราะห์คุณลักษณะต่าง ๆ ที่สะท้อนความเป็นสมัยใหม่นิยมภายในตัวบทต้นฉบับ โดยประยุกต์ใช้โครงสร้างกวีนิพนธ์แบบผิดแผกจาก ขนบของกวีไทยในยุคร่วมสมัย และให้ความสำคัญกับความหมายเป็นหลัก ซึ่งสามารถสะท้อนความเป็นสมัยใหม่นิยมที่ตั้งคำถามต่อขนบ ทั้งยังช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาในการวิจัย และนำไปสู่บทแปลที่สามารถสะท้อนตัวบทต้นฉบับได้อย่างใกล้เคียง
