Words And Stardom: Modernist Poetic Responses To Asta Nielsen, Karl E. Toepfer

This essay discusses how four modernist poets portrayed the Danish movie star Asta Nilesen (1881-1972). German Hans Schiebelhuth (1895-1944) describes the "demonic" power of Nielsen's image to awaken dark aspects of his adolscent personality. For the Flemish poet Paul van Ostaijen (1896-1928), Nielsen's cinematic image provokes a radical shattering of language into extravagant "word-images." Danish writer Rudolf Broby-Johansen (1900-1987) linked Nielsen's image to a radical (Marxist) critique of oppressive sexual politics within a capitalist society. German Franz Behrens (1895-1977) composed a lengthy, expressionist ode to Nielsen from the perspective of one who actually worked as a screenwriter in the German …

The book describes the historical context for the Scaramouche tragic pantomime created by Poul Knudsen and Jean Sibelius in 1913. The pantomime had numerous productions in various European countries between 1922 and 1977, and the book examines all of them according to all available evidence. The text explains the historical and cultural significance of the pantomime and how it uniquely explores a dark and complex intersection of female sexuality, marriage, and class control of erotic desire. The authors examine all productions of Scaramouche from the premiere production in Copenhagen in 1922 to the last major production in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany …

Marsiya or elegy poetry is a literary genre that is often sung whenever a dear person has died. Marsiya has a visionary and secularist outlook. The knowledge keeps countries alive, both politically and socially, and economically. In the Shia sect of Islam, the act of writing and proposing elegy on Imam Hussain A.S. Martyrdom finds an important place, although it is not entirely restricted to it. This is the published introduction to the born-digital, open-access, peer-reviewed *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities*. More a rationale and scholarly study of both Digital Pedagogy and DPiH in general, this introduces articulates the uses, theory, rationale about digital pedagogy as it has been shaped in U.S. institutions since the explosion of Digital Humanities in 2009. As a separate field now, Digital Pedagogy is built on the generosity of its practitioners, but saving the *stuff* of teaching and pedagogy is difficult. Twisty Little Passages: The Several Editions Of Lady Caroline Lamb's Glenarvon, Paul Douglass

A literary criticism of the book "Glenarvon," by Lady Caroline Lamb is presented. It presents the symbolic significance of the characters. It outlines the consequences of denying true love and the importance of aristocratic leadership and self-control. It examines the preface of the book in which the author states that the novel is not immoral even with the inclusion of crimes and she asks readers to recognize that her intention of writing the book is to describe human nature.

On A Special Copy Of Caroline Lamb's Glenarvon Recently Discovered In The Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Paul Douglass, Ria Grimbergen

This essay analyses a recently discovered copy of the first edition of Lady Caroline Lamb's Glenarvon in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek at The Hague filled with annotations and corrections apparently in the hand of its author. This copy shows many of the extensive revisions eventually implemented in the second edition of the novel. Some changes indicated in this special copy were not adopted, however, and a note on the punctuation in a hand not the author's raises the question of whether others edited the work, especially the punctuation. Lord Byron took a highly ambivalent attitude toward female authorship, and yet his poetry, letters, and journals exhibit many proofs of the power of women's language and perceptions. He responded to, borrowed from, and adapted parts of the works of Maria Edgeworth, Harriet Lee, Madame de Stael, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth lnchbald, Hannah Cowley, Joanna Baillie, Lady Caroline Lamb, Mary Robmson, and Charlotte Dacre. This article provides an overview of the love affairs of Lady Caroline Lamb. Before she met Lord Byron, she had a long messy affair with Godfrey Vassal Webster. Their affair was known through letters which was held in the British library, the public records office in Chichester, and the like. Caroline cannot or will not adapt to the complicated social milieu of regency London.

Lady Caroline Lamb fictionalized the Byronic persona in Glenarvon (1816) and gave voice to the female characters that remain largely silent in Byron’s early work. Byron responded to her mimicry and to the female perspective of Glenarvon by creating a feminized hero and strong speaking roles for women in Don Juan, though his stated purpose was to undermine, not uphold, feminine power.

Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass

The writer examines an aesthetics of empire evident in Eliot's The Waste Land. He contends that though this work's formal innovations appear “revolutionary,” its aesthetics fit into modernism's reactionary character and reflect the cultural politics of the British conservatism that Eliot had adopted. In decoding the poem's fragments and allusions, he illustrates Eliot's preoccupation with empire. He also shows how The Waste Land may be seen as part of a British literary tradition of “reading the wreckage” that goes back at least to Edward Volney's Ruins (1791).
