His twenty feature films are remarkably varied, yet characteristically probe the compelling, contradictory, and enchanting nature of human sexual behavior. He develops a cluster of images or tropes that appear across his films—from knives to claustrophobic settings—that advance his enquiry. The article offers a Valentinian interpretation of the Hollywood film The Others (2001). A particular attention is paid to the ways in which cinematic motifs and narrative elements of the film draw on myths, ideas and symbolic imagery present in Valentinian works, especially in the Gospel of Truth (NHC I, 3) and the Gospel of Philip (NHC II, 3). In the course of the heuristic analysis, the paper argues that although the film employs Valentinian ideas, it depicts different understanding of the world. This paper aims at a comparison between a classic poem from ancient Greek literature, the Works and Days by Hesiod, and ancestral records of hemerology from Daba Culture, entitled Gelimu, collected during my fieldwork in South-West China. Both traditions use constellations to mark important dates throughout the year, providing similar instructions on how to deal with daily work in the fields. Moreover, their mnemonic strategies and formulaic verses reflect their origins from oral traditions passed down from generation to generation. The idea of “home” is a significant occurrence in postcolonial literature, as it connects to other ideas as identity, nationhood, and culture. This paper discusses “home” in Ghanaian poetry focusing on three well-regarded poets: Kofi Awoonor, Kofi Anyidoho, and Mawuli Adzei. These poets come from the Ewe ethnic group, and engage with the Pan-African project in both their scholarly and creative expressions. Drawing on John Berger, Sara Dessen, and Ewe thought on the afterlife, this paper suggests two major types of “home” in the works of these three poets: the physical, and the metaphysical. The arrival of cinema in Latin America quickly produced an intermedial cultural landscape. To this day, experimental authors in the Hemisphere and the Caribbean write cinegraphic fiction as a way to deal with film’s socio-cultural repercussions. My work addresses the question of how cinema transforms and subverts the creation of fictional narratives in the last five decades. By considering a corpus of post-1968 literary works in Latin America, I argue that contemporary cinegraphic fiction, a concept I coined, shed light on filmic discourses, platforms, and artifacts and transpose film language into literary texts. Failures of Grace argues that nineteenth-century novelists challenge the hegemonies of literary form and the value of personal suffering through what I call the trans-genre tragic novel. This new form is emblematic of a period in which values hang in the balance and places traditional values at odds with themselves by combining the low form of the novel with the highest mimetic mode in the Western tradition: tragedy. It simultaneously proposes the most vulnerable members of society as tragic heroes in contrast to the noble figures who previously were presumed to define the genre.

This thesis examines the pedagogical usefulness of the antithetical reading model of textual deformation for the study of poetic works. Decadent Orientalisms presents a sustained critique of the ways Orientalism and decadence have formed a joint discursive mode of the imperial imagination. Attentive to historical and literary configurations of language, race, religion, and power, Fieni shows the importance of understanding Western discourses of Eastern decline and obsolescence together with Arab and Islamic responses in which the language of decadence returns as a characteristic of the West.

Johann Schiltberger included a curious episode about the ‘Sparrow Hawk Mountain’ in his famous travelogue Reisebericht from 1427. This episode can be traced back to John Mandeville’s Travels in the German translation by Michel Velser. This study examines the similarities between Mandeville’s text and Schiltberger’s account, but then also the use of this motif in the tradition of the Melusine novel (Jean d’Arras and Thüring von Ringoltingen). Further attempts are made to identify sources for this episode Mandeville might have drawn from, including an Armenian chronicle and even the love treatise De amore by Andreas Capellanus.

Animals in medieval hagiography typically appear in conjunction with saints who practice withdrawal from normal human society or are otherwise socially marginalized, such as hermits, outcasts, or mendicant friars. The association of these figures with animals emphasizes the saints’ status on the social margins; for these saints, interaction with animals is a substitute for participation in human society. An exception to this pattern is Hugh of Avalon, bishop of Lincoln in the late twelfth century. What do I think of Middlemarch? What do I think of glory?”1 This is the famous reply Emily Dickinson wrote to her bookish cousins in 1873 after her first reading of George Eliot’s novel. Dickinson’s sentiments were also my own when I completed my first reading of Middlemarch (1871–1872), about thirty-five years ago. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาขนบในการแปลชื่อภาพยนตร์บันเทิงคดีแนววิทยาศาสตร์ (Science Fiction: Sci-fi) ระหว่างช่วงพ.ศ. 2541-2555 และช่วงพ.ศ. 2556-2563 เพื่อค้นหาว่าในยุคหลังการแปลชื่อภาพยนตร์บันเทิงคดีแนววิทยาศาสตร์มีขนบการแปลอย่างไร และสาเหตุของการเปลี่ยนแปลงดังกล่าวคืออะไร นอกจากนี้ผู้วิจัยยังต้องการศึกษาว่าประเภทย่อยของภาพยนตร์นั้นจะมีผลต่อขนบในการแปลภาพยนตร์หรือไม่ โดยผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกชื่อภาพยนตร์ไซไฟทั้งหมดจำนวน 229 รายชื่อ และได้จำแนกประเภทย่อยของภาพยนตร์ในทั้งสองช่วงเวลาออกเป็น 5 กลุ่ม ได้แก่ ภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-แอ็คชั่น ภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ระทึกขวัญ ภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ผจญภัย ภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ตลก และภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-โรแมนติก จากการศึกษาผู้วิจัยพบว่า ในยุคหลังนั้น กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ที่มีแนวโน้มของขนบในการแปลโดยเคลื่อนเข้าหาวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง ได้แก่ กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ตลก โดยสะท้อนผ่านการใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบตั้งชื่อใหม่ และกลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-โรแมนติก โดยสะท้อนผ่านการใช้กลวิธีการแปลความ ทั้งนี้การใช้กลวิธีการแปลความและการตั้งชื่อใหม่อาจทำให้ผู้ชมเข้าใจเนื้อหาสำคัญของภาพยนตร์และอาจทำให้ผู้ชมตัดสินใจรับชมภาพยนตร์ สำหรับกลุ่มภาพยนตร์ที่มีแนวโน้มของขนบในการแปลเเบบประนีประนอมระหว่างการเคลื่อนเข้าหาวัฒนธรรมต้นทางและปลายทาง ได้แก่ กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-แอ็คชั่น กลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ระทึกขวัญ และกลุ่มภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ-ผจญภัย โดยสะท้อนผ่านกลวิธีการแปลแบบทับศัพท์โดยการขยายความเพิ่มเติม ซึ่งการทับศัพท์เป็นการรักษาชื่อในภาษาต้นทาง และการขยายความเพิ่มเติมเป็นการสะท้อนเนื้อหาของภาพยนตร์เพื่อให้ผู้ชมเกิดความสนใจที่จะรับชมภาพยนตร์ดังกล่าว

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในตัวบทโฆษณาผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องสำอาง รวมถึงศึกษากลวิธีการถ่ายทอดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์จากต้นฉบับไปยังฉบับแปล การวิจัยนี้รวบรวมข้อมูลผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องสำอางในกลุ่มผลิตภัณฑ์บำรุงผิวและเครื่องสำอางสำหรับตกแต่งทั้งหมด 240 ผลิตภัณฑ์จากเว็บไซต์ตราสินค้าที่มีทั้งภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาแนวคิดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ตามแนวภาษาศาสตร์ปริชานของ Lakoff และ Johnson (2003) แนวทางการระบุรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์จากกลุ่มนักวิชาการ Pragglejaz Group (2007) และการจัดประเภทกลุ่มคำศัพท์ตามวงความหมายจากงานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในตัวบทประเภทต่าง ๆ รวมถึงการศึกษาลักษณะภาษาโฆษณาและประเภทอุปลักษณ์ที่พบในโฆษณาเครื่องสำอางในภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาไทย และจากการศึกษาแนวทางการแปลอุปลักษณ์ตามแนวคิดแบบดั้งเดิมและตามแนวภาษาศาสตร์ปริชาน ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์กลวิธีการแปลที่ผสมผสานกันของ Deignan et al. (1997) Schäffner (2004) และ Toury (1995) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ในตัวบทโฆษณาเครื่องสำอางภาษาอังกฤษที่คัดเลือกมามีอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 29 ประเภท มีจำนวนรูปภาษาที่แสดงอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 1,391 ตัวอย่าง ผู้วิจัยเลือกอุปลักษณ์ที่พบสูงสุดใน 10 อันดับแรก ได้แก่ อุปลักษณ์สงคราม แสง มนุษย์ สุขภาพ พืชและการเพาะปลูก สิ่งทอและเครื่องนุ่งห่ม เครื่องจักร ศิลปะ อาหารและโภชนาการ และภาชนะ ซึ่งจำนวนรูปภาษาที่แสดงอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 1,166 ตัวอย่าง นำมาวิเคราะห์อุปลักษณ์ที่พบในฉบับแปลและกลวิธีการแปล พบว่าภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษมีอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมดนี้เหมือนกัน ผลการวิเคราะห์กลวิธีการแปลเป็นไปตามสมมติฐานที่ตั้งไว้ กล่าวคือ พบว่ากลวิธีการแปลที่พบมากที่สุดคือ 1) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิม แต่รูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์ต่างจากต้นฉบับ ร้อยละ 51.41 ตามด้วย 2) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิม และรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์ตรงตามต้นฉบับ ร้อยละ 26.90 3) การแปลโดยไม่รักษามโนทัศน์ (ไม่มีรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์) ร้อยละ 12.93 4) การแปลโดยใช้มโนทัศน์ที่แตกต่างกัน ร้อยละ 4.62 และ 5) การละไม่แปล ร้อยละ 4.11 นอกจากนี้ ยังพบว่ามีการเพิ่มมโนทัศน์ที่ไม่ปรากฏในต้นฉบับเข้ามาในฉบับแปลด้วย โดยสรุป การถ่ายทอดอุปลักษณ์เชิง มโนทัศน์ในตัวบทโฆษณาเครื่องสำอางจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทแทบไม่พบปัญหาในการแปลที่มาจากปัจจัยทางวัฒนธรรมซึ่งอาจเป็นเพราะวัฒนธรรมปลายทางรับค่านิยมและวัฒนธรรมจากต่างชาติโดยเฉพาะเรื่องความงามมาอย่างยาวนาน จึงสามารถรักษามโนทัศน์เดิมในต้นฉบับได้เป็นส่วนใหญ่ ส่วนกลวิธีการแปลอื่น ๆ แสดงให้เห็นการปรับบทแปลในตัวบทโฆษณาเครื่องสำอาง

The first monotheist human, Adam, was likely a god, in the Mesopotamian mythology, just as the Hebrew Genesis reluctantly revealed, and the assertive Quran slightly hinted. Specifically, he was the pre-monotheist, Sumerian god, Idim, who was also called GodEa and many other nicknames over the millenniums. The names Idim and Adam are even linguistically related, according to early Arabic root words analysis. Psychology in the United States (U.S.) is partially constituted by a cultural history of intellectual imperialism that undermines its altruistic intent and prevents disciplinary reflexivity. The scholarship and clinical application of Yoga exemplifies the way U.S. psychology continues to give lived authority to imperialism as part of the neoliberal agenda. Through a hermeneutic literature analysis of two source Yogic texts and peer-reviewed articles that exemplify the dominant discourse on Yoga in U.S. psychology, this dissertation identified themes that describe culturally embedded presentations of Yoga and their sociopolitical implications.
