The Other Within: Stigmatization And Marginalization Of Hui Muslims In The Novel Musilin De Zangli (Muslim Funeral), Flávio Fraga Da Silva
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
This article offers a case study of the protagonist of the novel Musilin de Zangli by Huo Da, as a representation of the stigmatization and marginalization of the Hui Muslim community in Beijing in the early 1960s. Drawing on this portrayal, the novel’s subliminal and allegorical dimensions, and an examination of the mechanisms of “domestic othering” operative in Maoist China, the study discusses how the text advances a veiled critique of the abuses and excesses experienced by this community in the period leading up to, and including, the Cultural Revolution. “Dead Stars” The Revolutionary Politics Of The Edenic Past, Rosario Cruz-Lucero

This study undertakes a comprehensive, close reading of the original version of Paz Marquez Benitez’s (PMB’s) “Dead Stars,” published in the Philippines Herald in 1925. Previous critical essays have explicated selected aspects of the 1975 version edited and published by Leopoldo Yabes, based on some of its elements and techniques. On the other hand, this close reading is supplemented by empirical data gathered through historical research, including the cultural forms of the three Philippine traditions: indigenous, Hispanic, and colonial American. Weaving through the intertextual reading is the use of PMB’s biography, sources and influences, specifically the story’s historical context, milieu, …

Rereading Nick Joaquin As A Devil’S Advocate “La Naval De Manila” (1943) In Context, Luisa L. Gomez
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Nick Joaquin characterized himself as a “devil’s advocate” for taking contrarian positions in Philippine cultural history. His early essay “ La Naval de Manila” is taken as an example of such. A re-examination of the essay within its original context of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, however, reveals that Joaquin’s early historical imagination must be understood less as an act of rebellion and more as a product of negotiation. It navigates multiple audiences and overlapping empires—the Spanish past it venerates, the American period whose language it uses, and the Japanese present that enabled its publication. How To Rewrite A Tagalog Novel Into An English Classic: Danton Remoto’S English Translation Of Lope K. Santos’S Banaag At Sikat, Chris Cañete Rodriguez Kelly
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
To appeal to a contemporary global readership, Danton Remoto in his English translation of Lope K. Santos’s Banaag at Sikat omits much of the original’s political passages. Such an approach to translation, however, hollows out elements of the original. Following the work of Annette Damayanti Lienau and Akshya Saxena, this essay understands colonial and vernacular languages as dialectically interdependent. It argues that Remoto’s abridgement of Banaag at Sikat is produced not by a refusal to translate the Tagalog of the original, but a refusal to translate the coconstitutive difference between English and Tagalog, which inheres precisely in the excessive political …

Binibigyang-diin sa maikling pagtalakay na ito na ang pagsasaling pampanitikan ay isang pampanitikang gawain. Kaugnay kung hindi man tunay na isang sangay ng mga araling pampanitikan ang pagsasalin. Lampas sa tumbasan ng mga salita o parirala, higit sa paghanap ng literal na kahulugan o praktikal na aral ng teksto, ang pampanitikang pagsasalin ay nakatuon sa pagkapanitikan ng panitikan. This article recounts the story behind the publication of Villa’s stories and his book Footnote to Youth: Tales of the Philippines and Others (1933) in the United States. First, the conditions of the American literary marketplace are briefly described. Second, documents pertaining to the realization in print of Villa’s stories and his book are analyzed as sites of negotiations between colonial subject (Villa) and the colonial master (his American editors and publishers). Finally, an account of how Villa was made to circulate in the Philippines after the publication of his stories and his book in the United States is given. …

Nakatuon ang maikling pag-aaral na ito sa kasaysayan, poetika, at praktika ng saling-awit (song translation) sa Filipinas. Itinatanghal dito kung paanong ang gawaing ito ay bahagi ng maunlad at malaganap na tradisyong pabigkas ng Filipinas mulang sinaunang panahon hanggang sa kasalukuyan. Saligan ng pagtalakay ang tanggap na katotohanan, lalo na sa pabigkas na tradisyon, na ang tula ay awit o awit ang tula.
