Competition for scarce Colorado River water resources is nothing new, but the conflicts that prompted the seven basin states to negotiate the 1922 Colorado River Compact have grown considerably fiercer and more complex in recent decades. In 2007, responding to the challenges of increasing demand and sustained drought, the seven basin states and a number of other affected interests agreed to a set of interim guidelines for allocating Colorado River water in the event of shortages. This agreement represents an important evolution in the governance of the Colorado River, suggesting that the many interests in the basin can work together …

Modelling And Hazard Analysis For Contaminated Sediments Using Stamp Model, 2011 Mines ParisTech
Modelling And Hazard Analysis For Contaminated Sediments Using Stamp Model, Karim Hardy, Franck Guarnieri
Publications
Processes for remediation (removal of pollution or contaminants) of contaminated sediments have been very efficient. These technologies, which are particularly complex, call for a comprehensive approach to risk analysis which characterises all threats (to humans, equipment, local residents, the environment, etc.) . The STAMP accident model (Systems-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes) is an example of such a comprehensive approach, and it has been chosen to characterise the risks associated with Novosol (registered trademark), an innovative remediation process.

Managing Risk In A Failing It Project: A Social Constructionist View, Wee Kiat Lim, Siew Kien Sia, Adrian Yeow
CMP Research
Why do IT projects continue to stumble, despite the proliferation of risk management methodologies and a growing body of knowledge on project risk assessment and mitigation? In this paper, we propose an alternative theoretical perspective that views project risk as a social construction process shaped by the risk accounts of social groups and actors within an implementation context. Risk management is embedded in the social processes where risks are negotiated and contested, with some risk accounts amplified and some attenuated. Through the analysis of a large IT implementation in an Asian logistics firm and its trajectory of successive crises, we …

A Review Focused On The Psychological Effectiveness Of Tai Chi On Different Populations, Long Zhang, Thomas Lowder, Jian Liu
Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research
As a popular exercise form, Tai Chi (TC) has been investigated to determine its contributions to an active and healthy lifestyle. There are an increasing number of researchers who focus on exploring the potential physiological and psychological benefits of TC but only a few systematic reviews of these benefits to a variety of populations. The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively evaluate the reported psychological benefits associated with practicing TC. Although many investigators have reported possible psychological benefits of TC for children, young adults, older healthy adults, and for a variety of patient populations, many of the reports suffer …

Estimating Cargo Airdrop Collateral Damage Risk, 2011 Air Force Institute of Technology
Estimating Cargo Airdrop Collateral Damage Risk, Vincent R. Cammarano
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to determine an appropriate method for estimating cargo airdrop collateral damage risk. Specifically, this thesis answers the question: How can mission planners accurately predict airdrop collateral damage risk? The question is answered through a literature review and a thorough examination of a data set of real world airdrop scoring data. The data were examined to determine critical factors that affect airdrop error risks as well as to determine the characteristics of airdrop error patterns. Through this research it was determined that bivariate normal distributions with parameters pairs determined by empirical data are appropriate for …
Application Of Post Modern Portfolio Theory To Mitigate Risk In International Shipping, 2011 Air Force Institute of Technology
Application Of Post Modern Portfolio Theory To Mitigate Risk In International Shipping, Michael R. Quashne
Theses and Dissertations
This research uses asset allocation concepts to determine the correct amount of cargo to send down the PAKGLOC and NDN to minimize the risk of loss or damage. Loss and Damage data is used from Transportation Discrepancy Reports and overall value is assumed to match the industry standard. Using assumed levels of pilferage along the NDN, a Monte Carlo simulation is run at each level of pilferage, and a Co-Lower Partial Moment model is solved. Analysis of the data shows a wide spread of possible optimal solutions at each level of pilferage. Due to the low levels of risk along …
Improving The Relevance Of Cyber Incident Notification For Mission Assurance, 2011 Air Force Institute of Technology
Improving The Relevance Of Cyber Incident Notification For Mission Assurance, Stephen M. Woskov
Theses and Dissertations
Military organizations have embedded Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into their core mission processes as a means to increase operational efficiency, improve decision making quality, and shorten the kill chain. This dependence can place the mission at risk when the loss, corruption, or degradation of the confidentiality, integrity, and/or availability of a critical information resource occurs. Since the accuracy, conciseness, and timeliness of the information used in decision making processes dramatically impacts the quality of command decisions, and hence, the operational mission outcome; the recognition, quantification, and documentation of critical mission-information resource dependencies is essential for the organization to gain …
The Shifting Terrain Of Risk And Uncertainty On The Liability Insurance Field, 2011 University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School
The Shifting Terrain Of Risk And Uncertainty On The Liability Insurance Field, Tom Baker
All Faculty Scholarship
Recent sociological and historical work suggests that insurance risks often are not reliably calculable, except in hindsight. Insurance is “an uncertain business,” characterized by competition for premiums that pushes insurers into the unknown. This essay takes some preliminary steps that extend this insight into the liability insurance field. The essay first provides a simple quantitative comparison of U.S. property and liability insurance premiums over the last sixty years, setting the stage to make three points: (1) liability insurance premiums have grown at a similar rate as property insurance premiums and GDP over this period, providing yet another piece of evidence …

The spatial distribution of banks in any geographic entity determines the level of accessibility to its services by the public. This study examined the pattern of banks distribution in Ilorin metropolis. Field survey was employed in determining the number of available commercial banks and their respective distances between each other. The spatial analysis technique such as the nearest neighbour analysis as used ascertain the degree of clustering, density and the average distance taken to access these services. The study revealed that about 96% of the total number of banks are situated in the Central Business District which exhibited a very …
