Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Helium is integral in several industries, including nuclear waste management and semiconductors. Thus, developing a sensing method for detecting helium is essential to ensure the proper operation of such facilities. Several approaches can be used for helium detection, including based on the high thermal conductivity of helium, which is several times higher than air. This work utilizes the high thermal conductivity of helium to design and analyze a bimorph MEMS sensor for helium sensing applications. COMSOL Multiphysics software (version 6.2) is used to carry out this investigation. The sensor is constructed from poly-silicon and SiO2 materials with a trenched …

Recent advancements in computer vision have demonstrated remarkable success in image classification tasks, particularly when provided with an ample supply of accurately labeled images for training. These techniques have also exhibited significant potential in revolutionizing computer-aided medical diagnosis by enabling the segmentation and classification of medical images, leveraging Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and similar models. However, the integration of such technologies into clinical practice faces notable challenges. Chief among these is the obstacle of acquiring high-quality medical imaging data for training purposes. Patient privacy concerns often hinder researchers from accessing large datasets, while less common medical conditions pose additional hurdles …

Impact Force Helmet Device For Concussion Monitoring, Patrice Mulligan, Karina Mealey, Zack Borthwick, Benjamin Fick
General Engineering
To track head trauma in football, our device is placed inside a football helmet to measure both linear and gyroscopic (rotational) accelerations. These measurements are taken using an ADXL375 linear accelerometer and an LSM6DSOX accelerometer and gyroscope. The data from these sensors is processed and transmitted wirelessly by a SparkFun Thing Plus microcontroller to another SparkFun Thing Plus microcontroller connected to a laptop on the sidelines. Our program on the laptop stores the acceleration impact data into a .csv file for each player. If a likely concussive impact is detected, the program displays a popup warning. Testing results were promising …

The Pressure Distribution Of Rotating Cylinders Using An Onboard Wireless Data Acquisition System, Nathan Eller
Master's Theses
This thesis presents a novel, cost-effective method for mapping the pressure distribution on a rotating cylinder in cross flow, a phenomenon central to the Magnus effect. Utilizing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) pressure sensors, a high-resolution data acquisition system was developed and integrated into a rotating cylinder model. Compared to traditional approaches, such as slip rings or one-off designs, this method proved significantly cheaper and faster while achieving comparable or superior resolution. The experimental setup, including a modified continuous rotation technique and adaptable model design, facilitated rapid testing across a broad range of Reynolds numbers and reduced frequencies, exceeding the …

Design Of An Integrated System For The Protection Of Patient Health Information In Medical Images, Manikandan V
Theses and Dissertations
Electronic clinical data such as Patient Health Information (PHI) is stored by adapting the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard to build an integrated healthcare system where medical images from various sources can be interlinked. The healthcare industry poses a threat from hackers, and the information fetched by hackers provides more money than the other information stolen. This thesis deals with designing and analysing encryption algorithms, key generation mechanisms, and information-hiding schemes for protecting PHI.
Sensitive multimedia information of all forms is encrypted, with a key, before storage and transmission to protect it from illegal use and manipulation …

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
Metal matrix composite (MMC) with 7xxx aluminum matrix is potential for ballistic applications due to the combination of strength, toughness, and light weight. Previous study successfully produced aluminum-based composites with SiC particles which were able to stop type III bullet, however cracks remained on back of the plate. Therefore, in this research, SiC was replaced by zirconia (ZrO2) due to its high fracture toughness. Ti-B grain refiner was added to further improve toughness through grain boundary strengthening mechanism. This research developed 5 vol.% ZrO2 strengthened Al-10Zn-6Mg-2Si composite with addition of Al-5Ti-1B grain refiner produced through squeeze casting …

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
Railway axle serves as a vital connection between the train's wheels and its body. However, cyclic loading and high speed can induce fatigue in railway axle, which potentially leads to damage human safety. Therefore, it is important to find materials that have good mechanical properties with the lowest weight and cost. In this paper, a comprehensive method using Ashby chart has been performed to select candidate materials of railway axle. The methods begin with analyzing function by determining the problem, objective function, and constraints. After that, the results obtained are ranked using Pahl and Beitz quantitative weighting method. The results …
