In terms of sleep, adolescence is a tumultuous time. Biologically, adolescents are more inclined to have a later circadian rhythm and an evening chronotype, causing them to fall asleep later in the night and wake up later in the morning compared to their preadolescent counterparts. Adolescents also must contend with the emergence of environmental factors such as less parental influence over bedtimes, increased caffeine use, part-time employment, increased electronic use before bed, and earlier school start times. This literature review explored Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) with students who are not effective verbal communicators. AAC provides a means of communication for individuals who have disorders that impact communication. AAC is used in the form of low or high-tech device options to assist users in conveying messages to their communication partners. The focus of this review considers students with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities in the special education and general education classrooms and investigates teacher understanding of AAC, intervention options, and how AAC can be successfully implemented in classroom settings.

A growing awareness shows that repeated exposure to childhood trauma is widespread and affects children’s emotional, physical, and cognitive development. The damage can be life-long. It is necessary for school systems to advocate for students through understanding trauma-informed strategies and interventions. A review of available literature investigated the impact of trauma on children’s physical and mental health, behavior, and academic outcomes in school settings. The literature review sought to determine the impact of traditional discipline and alternative behavioral interventions on student outcomes. The research showed that certain student populations including Blacks, males, students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and students with special education status were suspended most often. Exclusionary discipline was connected to lower academic outcomes, higher drop-out rates, and increased likelihood of suspension. Successful use of alternative interventions suggested that students need to be taught new behavior skills in order to learn them. Extant research shows that response to intervention (RTI) individual and small group interventions increase children’s reading skills; however, little information is available that investigates whether the type of intervention format makes a difference in learning to read. The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten class (ECLS-K) database was used to identify third-grade children who received individual, small group, or combined individual and small group tutoring, to increase their reading skills.
