Preservice Teachers’ Strategies For Interpreting Fractions Represented In Discrete And Continuous Models, Victoria Webster 2020 SUNY Cortland

Preservice Teachers’ Strategies For Interpreting Fractions Represented In Discrete And Continuous Models, Victoria Webster

Transformations: Research Papers

Teaching and learning fractions have been a focus of research in mathematics education for decades. Current practices of teaching fractions emphasize the partitioning perspective, or part-whole, to conceptualize fractions. Another approach to teaching fractions is measurement. The part-whole approach limits students’ conceptualization of fractions and impedes learning improper fractions, whereas the measurement approach has the potential to overcome these difficulties and supports learning improper fractions. In this study, 55 preservice teachers engaged in an intervention to reexamine fractions using a measurement perspective. Before and after the intervention, the preservice teachers were asked to interpret proper and improper fractions using discrete …

A Single, Narrowly Focused Create Primary Literature Module Evokes Gains In Genetics Students' Self-Efficacy And Understanding Of The Research Process., Alison Krufka, Kristy Kenyon, Sally Hoskins

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Exposure to primary literature using CREATE tools has been shown to have a positive impact on students' self-efficacy and beliefs when incorporated into semester-long courses taught by extensively trained faculty. However, it is unknown whether similar benefits can occur with a brief exposure to CREATE in an otherwise traditionally taught course. We hypothesized that students who experienced a short-term CREATE module taught by faculty with minimal training in this pedagogy would make gains in scientific literacy and self-efficacy while also experiencing epistemological maturation. To test this hypothesis, we compared sections of students who experienced the CREATE module with sections of …

Streamlining Time Spent In Alternative Developmental Mathematics Pathways: Increasing Access To College-Level Mathematics Courses By Altering Placement Procedures, Marla A. Sole 2020 CUNY Guttman Community College

Streamlining Time Spent In Alternative Developmental Mathematics Pathways: Increasing Access To College-Level Mathematics Courses By Altering Placement Procedures, Marla A. Sole

Publications and Research

Developmental mathematics, which is designed to prepare students for college-level mathematics courses, can be a barrier to students’ success. In the United States, the majority of students placed into developmental mathematics courses fail to complete the developmental sequence. Alternative mathematics pathways offer some benefits when integrated with “just-in- time support” or expedited instruction on specific prerequisite concepts needed solely for the current lesson. This study compares two statistics courses taught at a public community college: a complete course taught in one semester and a two-semester version with just-in-time developmental content integrated into the course. The study found that students placed …

Learning To Use Mathematics Vs Mastering Basics, Bukurie Gjoci 2020 CUNY La Guardia Community College

Learning To Use Mathematics Vs Mastering Basics, Bukurie Gjoci

Publications and Research

This paper bestows the literature support for the need of innovative curriculum and instruction approaches of College Mathematics courses offered to students in need of remediation. One such curriculum is presented here. Designed in agreement with AMATYC (2018)-IMPACT’s vision, this innovative curriculum & instruction approach aims to create student-centered learning environments, engage students in written and oral communication and meaningful use of technology. It immerses students into subject’s big picture, explaining its components implicitly and narrows the gap between school and out-of-school mathematics.

This is Part 1 of the research project aiming to explore the use of top-down instructions when …

Relationships Between Placement Criteria And Students' Online Developmental Math Final Grades, Michael P. Gibson 2020 Liberty University

Relationships Between Placement Criteria And Students' Online Developmental Math Final Grades, Michael P. Gibson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Students placed into developmental math courses experience significantly increased costs for obtaining a college degree. They are also considerably more likely to drop out of college without obtaining a degree. However, many students need developmental math if they are going to succeed in their college level math courses. As a result, it is vitally important to both students and educators concerned with student success that students are placed into the correct courses. Little, if any, work has done been in this area for online math courses despite the explosive growth of online college level education in the last two decades. …

Using Adapted Primary Science Literature To Enhance Argumentation And Reasoning Skills In Middle School Students, Betsy Wiederin Lemus 2020 University of Northern Iowa

Using Adapted Primary Science Literature To Enhance Argumentation And Reasoning Skills In Middle School Students, Betsy Wiederin Lemus

Graduate Research Papers

Adapted primary literature is literature adapted from primary scientific literature for the purpose of using it with school age students. The process begins with teachers finding an appropriate primary scientific literature article, written by scientists for scientists, and rewriting the article to meet the reading level and understanding of the students being taught. In the newly created article, a teacher focuses only on the part of the original article that is important to the students learning and the writer may add background information, graphics, or edit existing graphics to make them more student friendly. The goal of this project is …

Effective Interventions To Improve Mathematic Fact Fluency, Keisha Boevers 2020 Northwestern College - Orange City

Effective Interventions To Improve Mathematic Fact Fluency, Keisha Boevers

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review discusses the importance of mathematic fact fluency and the lasting impact it can have on student's success in the area of mathematics. Studies show that mathematic fact fluency serves as the foundation for advanced math skills. The review identifies three mathematic fact fluency interventions that educators can implement in their classroom. The research focuses on the cover, copy, compare intervention, as well as taped problems and computer-based programs, specifically Reflex. The data indicates that all three math interventions are effective in providing students with appropriate and sufficient support needed at their current academic level. Further research needs …

Instructional Coaching And Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices, Hillary J. Gingerich 2020 Northwestern College - Orange City

Instructional Coaching And Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices, Hillary J. Gingerich

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This classroom action research project compares the impact of instructional coaching with the focus on effective mathematics teaching strategies as outlined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in the text Principles to Action. Two 3rd grade classrooms were studied with one being a control classroom and the other whose teacher enrolled in a 6-week coaching cycle focusing on student centered goals around two effective mathematics teaching practices. Those effective mathematics teaching practices are posing purposeful questions and facilitating meaningful mathematics discourse. A pretest and posttest from FastBridge’s MCAP was used to determine the growth over the 6-week study …

Use Of Peer Instruction And Tophat In A Pharmacology Lecture: Observation Of Students' Engagment And Perception, Hannah Espinosa

Student Scholars Day Posters

Different instructional practices can have different effects on student engagement and learning outcomes in a STEM course. The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in teaching practices and the engagement of students in two different sections of the same BMS course, one section with a traditional lecture style class while the other utilized an interactive online platform, TopHat, in tandem with lecture. This study also investigates the students’ perception of the usage of TopHat and whether peer discussions in the TopHat session will lead to better learning results. Data are currently being collected by observing five classes …
