Welcome to our annual Mathematics Department Newsletter. We had an exciting year with many activities and accomplishments. Our students have received awards, attended conferences, conducted research, and have really contributed to the life of the department. Our faculty have had many accomplishments in teaching and scholarship. We conducted several events such as Alumni Night, hosted a guest speaker for the university community, had our Pi Mu Epsilon induction and awards ceremony, and much more. We have heard from several alumni and are happy to report what they are doing. Our Math Club has been becoming more active. On the curriculum …

Eight semesters of qualitative data, collected over four academic years, are presented from a project that resulted in the development of a student professional learning community of high-achieving, low-income engineering and engineering technology student veterans. In the context of this project, student veterans received academic, professional, and financial support that helped them to be successful in school and to prepare them for a career in the STEM workforce. As adult learners, students in this learning community were a vital part of the curriculum development which resulted in increasing the students’ interest and buy-in. Relations Between Australian Primary Teachers’ Reported Professional Development Engagement And Their Science Teaching Practices And Efficacy Beliefs, James Deehan, Amy Macdonald

: Professional development has long been viewed as crucial to sustained improvement in the quality of primary science education. This paper considers professional development beyond the context of a specific program by examining how the science teaching efficacy beliefs and practices vary between teachers who both have and have not engaged with science professional development. This paper reports on a primarily quantitative study wherein a sample of 206 Australian public primary educators responded to an online survey capturing demographic, science teaching efficacy and science teaching practice data. การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ (1) ศึกษาผลของการจัดการเรียนรู้โดยใช้กระบวนการเรียนรู้แบบรวมพลัง 5 ขั้นตอน ที่มีต่อความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์ของนักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 (2) เพื่อศึกษาผลของการจัดการเรียนรู้โดยใช้กระบวนการเรียนรู้แบบรวมพลัง 5 ขั้นตอน ที่มีต่อสมรรถนะการรวมพลังทำงานเป็นทีมของนักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 และ (3) เพื่อศึกษาแนวปฏิบัติที่ดีในการจัดการเรียนรู้ผ่านกระบวนการเรียนรู้แบบรวมพลัง 5 ขั้นตอน ที่ช่วยพัฒนาให้นักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 มีความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์และสมรรถนะการรวมพลังทำงานเป็นทีม โดยเก็บรวมรวมข้อมูลจากแบบวัดความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์ แบบประเมินสมรรถนะการรวมพลังทำงานเป็นทีม แบบบันทึกหลังสอนของครู และแบบบันทึกอนุทินของนักเรียน กลุ่มเป้าหมาย คือ นักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 จำนวน 39 คน สถิติที่ใช้คือ ค่าเฉลี่ยเลขคณิต ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน ค่าร้อยละ สถิติทดสอบทีแบบไม่อิสระต่อกันและการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา ผลการวิจัยพบว่า (1) นักเรียนมีความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์หลังเรียนสูงกว่าก่อนเรียนอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ .05 (2) ผลการประเมินสมรรถนะการรวมพลังทำงานเป็นทีมเพิ่มขึ้นและ (3) เมื่อจบวงจรปฏิบัติการ พบว่านักเรียนที่มีผลการประเมินอยู่ในระดับดีมาก คิดเป็นร้อยละ 94.87 และระดับดี คิดเป็นร้อยละ 5.13 สำหรับแนวปฏิบัติที่ดีในการจัดการเรียนรู้คือ (3.1) ครูควรใช้คำถามให้นักเรียนทราบถึงความถนัดของตนเองที่มีต่อภาระงานเพื่อเอื้อให้นักเรียนที่มีความถนัดต่างกันได้มีโอกาสเป็นผู้นำในกิจกรรมที่แตกต่างกัน (3.2) ครูใช้สถานการณ์เชิงอุปมาอุปมัยที่น่าสนใจให้นักเรียนเปรียบเทียบและรวมพลังสร้างชิ้นงาน ทำให้นักเรียนช่วยกันคิดวิเคราะห์โดยใช้การรวมพลังทำงานเป็นทีม (3.3) ให้นักเรียนมีส่วนร่วมในการเลือกสมาชิกและเปลี่ยนบทบาทหน้าที่ในกลุ่มจะช่วยให้นักเรียนมีความเป็นผู้นำและผู้ตามได้ดีขึ้น (3.4) ใช้กระดาษโน้ตในการเขียนระดมความคิด จะช่วยให้นักเรียนกล้าจะแสดงความคิดเห็นและวางแผนร่วมกัน (3.5) ครูควรจัดกิจกรรมให้แต่ละทีมแข่งขันกันโดยมีการเสริมแรงทางบวก และการทดสอบท้ายคาบเป็นทีมและ (3.6) ครูควรให้นักเรียนร่วมกันสร้างชิ้นงานและนำเสนอผลงานหน้าชั้นเรียน เพราะทำให้นักเรียนช่วยกันคิดวิเคราะห์โดยใช้การรวมพลังทำงานเป็นทีม

In this article, I explore the impact of receiving mentorship into research and theory of the field that was guided by a social constructivist learning lens. I reflect on the ways that my conception of research and research agenda were framed subconsciously by early experiences investigating my secondary mathematics teaching practice under the mentorship of Dr. Terry Wood. Terry mentored through listening, posing questions, creating cognitive conflict, and encouraging my autonomous exploration. Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

"Entomology in Citizen Science" introduces students to entomology in literature, in science articles and studies, and in inquiry-based field experiences. Students engage in citizen science by surveying arthropods in the local environment and posting pictures on iNaturalist. Arthropod surveys conducted in this course will serve as baseline biodiversity measures and will be continued and added to by future classes. Written, visual, and mathematic expression are taught in this course, and course objectives align with the Benchmarks for Science Literacy Project 2061 (American Association for the Advancement of Science; 1993).

The problem that was addressed in this study was that the academic needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) were not being met in biology classes in high schools in the local district because teachers were not consistently facilitating instruction using the required strategies of student discourse and collaborative structures. Student participation and performance in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) have been an education concern in the United States for years. In 2013, Texas lawmakers passed House Bill 5 (HB5) to support increases in STEM awareness, particularly among ethnic minority and female students. To date, no studies have been conducted on the impact, if any, of HB5 on Texas high school students’ course selections in STEM areas. Students’ perceived values and costs of learning chemistry influence their performance and intentions of choosing chemistry-related majors or careers. Based on Situated Expectancy-Value Theory, this study adopted a mixed method approach to examine the conceptualization of values and costs among Chinese high school students and identify their relations with chemistry test performance across gender. Qualitative content analyses revealed that students’ perceived values for chemistry could be categorized into five broad categories: utility value, epistemic value, intrinsic value, aesthetic value, and social value. A multidisciplinary service-learning project that involved teaching engineering to fourth and fifth graders was implemented in three sets of engineering and education classes to determine if there was an impact on engineering knowledge and teamwork skills in both the engineering and education students as well as persistence in the engineering students. Collaboration 1 paired a 100-level engineering Information Literacy class in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with a 300-level Educational Foundation class.
