In the debate over market-driven education versus traditional public education, many times, the ideologies behind each approach come into direct conflict. Social Studies In Three Canadian Provinces: A Comparative Exploration, Catherine Broom

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This paper compares the similarities and differences in Ontario, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia’s Social Studies curriculum documents. It finds a number of similarities in the curriculum documents including in structural form, aims, and content. It also finds some differences based on historical contingencies and regional conditions. The paper then analyses possible reasons for the similarities and differences found, with a focus on key individuals involved and contexts, and comments on whether calls for a national Social Studies curriculum should be implemented.

In an attempt to look into ways to reduce attrition rates in nursing programs, we did a study to look into what non-academic factors can be looked at in addition to the current standard admission data. The research question of interest was “What non-academic characteristics of students can lead to best chance of success in nursing school?” Our sample included 115 students at Georgia Southern University School of Nursing, who have already completed at least one semester of nursing school. The purpose of this study was to determine perceptions of involvement of 120 elementary, 120 middle, and 120 high school parents. A combined version of Sheldon and Epstein's Parent Survey of Family and Community Involvement in the Elementary and Middle School Grades and the Parent Survey of Family and Community Involvement in the High School Grades was used to gather data. This qualitative study investigates factors that affect pre-service teachers’ electronic portfolio adoption process. Data is collected through in-depth interviews and document analysis. Factors affecting pre-service teachers’ adoption of electronic portfolio include school requirements, social pressures, time constraints, previous experiences, family consciousness, and personality. Findings suggest that successful electronic portfolio implementation rely on consideration of both external and internal aspects such as time, motivation, interaction, and technological skills.

The purpose of this study was to determine students' current preferred ways to receive course communication from their online instructors. In a time when technology is changing daily, and a time when young people are often the most up-to-date with that new technology, students’ preferences for how they receive online course communication is apt to change often too. In order to determine students’ current preferences, a survey was administered two semesters to both graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in an at least online course at a university in the Midwest. This thesis addresses adult education in a museum setting and measures adult learning during and after a museum visit. While a number of studies have investigated the impact of museum visits on children’s learning, there are few studies on adult learners. This thesis is an initial effort to fill that gap. Qualitative data were gathered through interviews with 24 adult visitors at the Victor Valley Museum in Apple Valley, California. The objective was to determine which exhibits were found to be of greatest interest to the visitor. Follow-up interviews were conducted four weeks later to measure retention. The qualitative data …

Work-Related Stress: Survey Of Academic Staff In The Institutes Of Technology Sector, Aidan Kenny

This article presents findings from a survey of professional workers in the institutes of technology sector in Ireland regarding work-related stress. The research instrument was based on a work-related stress questionnaire developed by the UK Health and Safety Executive, augmented with a specific subset of questions relevant to the Irish higher education sector. The questionnaire format was modified to enable online delivery. It was distributed to a sample population in 2014 with a response rate over 30% (n=1,131). The research provides baseline data on work-related stress levels experienced by workers in this sector. The results associate increased levels of risk …
