Each year, more students enroll in online classes than the year before (Allen and Seaman, 2017). Online asynchronous discussions are often used in these online classes as a method of interaction between students and the instructor typically via an online discussion forum. It is in the discussion forums that students examine topics, debate points of view, defend opinions, and receive feedback from their instructor and peers despite the location or time difference that may exist between them (Cho and Tobias, 2016). Within these discussions, communities of inquiry can be created and the sense of isolation that can often be defeating …

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Innovative Pedagogy (2018-2020 archives)
Despite the burgeoning studies on student attrition and retention, many institutions continue to deal with related issues, including D, F, and W grades rates. The emerging and rapidly developing Learning Analytics (LA) field shows great potential for improving learning outcomes by monitoring and analyzing student performance to allow instructors to recommend specific interventions based on key performance indicators. Unfortunately, higher education has been slow to implement it. We, therefore, provide the rationale and benefits of increased LA integration into courses and curriculum. We further identify and suggest ready-to-implement best practices, as well as tools available in Learning Management Systems (LMSs) …

A Causal Comparative Study Of Student Success And Retention In An Undergraduate Program Offered Online And On Campus, Daniel David Tudor
Online Theses and Dissertations
Online education has grown significantly both in the number of courses offered and the number of degrees offered. The delivery format is being fueled by a student population that is growing more non-traditional. Work and family obligations dictate that classes are offered in a format that meets the needs of the students. The growth of universities toward online courses and degrees has brought opportunities to students, but it has also given institutions of higher education new income streams. In the case of public universities in Kentucky, this has helped offset reductions in state support. The viability of this format for …

Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
Students spend the first 13 years of their schooling learning how to be good students in the physical classroom, but receive little to no direct instruction in how to be successful online students. By developing a “Learning to Learn Online” module for students new to online learning at UNO, the Office of Digital Learning is helping prepare students to be successful online learners and freeing up faculty to focus on course content rather than instruction in the use of digital tools or study skills. This session will introduce strategies for developing and implementing similar online student-readiness programs to prepare students …

Broaden Your Passion! Women In Stem, Barbara Oakley
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
Women and men develop with equal, often outstanding, abilities in math and science. However, one of women’s advantages is that they also often have a developmental edge over men when it comes to verbal abilities. The result? When women hear the ubiquitous advice to “follow their passions,” they sometimes turn towards their undeniable strengths outside STEM. Some subjects—like STEM—take longer for women and men to master. This talk helps women recognize that it’s sometimes important to be patient with passion—don’t just follow your passions, broaden them!

Recent budget trends have led to more collaboration across university systems. These collaborations help members solve common problems, share resources, and develop and support innovative initiatives beyond what individual institutions could do alone. Historically, higher education institutions have fallen behind in ensuring accessibility for teaching and learning systems in general, and specifically for video. In the past several years, the University of Nebraska campuses have seen an increased need to meet accessibility requirements for video, particularly in online courses. In this session, members of ITS from each campus will present processes and outcomes that led to selecting ilos as the …

It is theorized that mobile technology, in its place alongside other “intellectual technologies” throughout human history, has contributed to significant shifts in the way that newer generations discover, interpret, interact with, and learn new information. The BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) movement in education has been touted as a means of actively and individually engaging these learners with content using technology that many of them may already own or are familiar with. The depth to which this movement has been applied in the medical and graduate medical education communities has been variable, partly owing to the fact that only recently …

Australian universities have moved towards greater reliance on technology as a learning tool. The use of podcasts or recorded lectures (sometimes called ilectures) is now common practice in both on-campus and online modes. Using a qualitative approach to data collection which included recorded interviews, an online survey of open-ended questions and the researcher’s own reflections on using ilectures, this study investigated 1) the impact of ilectures on the teaching and learning practices of both academics and students 2) student attendance in recorded lectures and 3) the responses of lecturers and students to being recorded. Findings highlighted a mix of reactions …

Getting The Most From Google Classroom: A Pedagogical Framework For Tertiary Educators, Keith R. Heggart, Joanne Yoo
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Many tertiary institutions have embraced digital learning through the use of online learning platforms and social networks. However, the research about the efficacy of such platforms is confused, as is the field itself, in part because of the rapidly evolving technology, and also because of a lack of clarity about what constitutes a learning platform. In this study, two early career academics and instructors examined the effectiveness of using Google Classroom for final year primary teacher education students to encourage student voice and agency, and to consider how the platform might influence future pedagogies at the tertiary level. The data …

The Online Student Experience: An Exploration Of First-Year University Students’ Expectations, Experiences And Outcomes Of Online Education, Melanie Henry
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Online higher education presents a critical opportunity to extend and diversify the student body. The Online Student Experience (OSE), and online student outcomes, however, remain shrouded in ambiguity. The literature presents conflicting reports of online education (OE) quality, confounded by a lack of appreciation for potential differences between online and on-campus education, and a diversity of interpretations for what constitutes OE. The present research conceptualises OE as representing university courses that require students to interact with instructors and course materials via the internet, with no expectation of attending a university campus. A broad student-centred perspective is notably lacking from the …

The purpose of this study was to investigate kinesiology students' experiences in an undergraduate online life span motor development course. This study was based on a theory of transactional distance (Moore, 1997). Seven undergraduate kinesiology majors (5 females, 2 males) enrolled in an online course at a Midwestern public university in the US participated in this study. Data collection included face-to-face, open-ended interviews, bulletin board discussion logs, and online assessment projects. A constant comparative method was used to interpret the data, which allowed themes to emerge from the data as well as from the theoretical framework. Three interrelated themes emerged …
