Utility Of The Hpt Framework For Improving Distance Education In Nigeria, Equi Nwulu 2018 Walden University

Utility Of The Hpt Framework For Improving Distance Education In Nigeria, Equi Nwulu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The fusion of the Internet with instructional design, and curricula delivery methods eliminated transactional distance in online learning. However, distance education (DE) in Nigeria has not aligned its pedagogy to the new reality in technology. The purposes of this non-experimental, predictive, validity study were to determine faculty and administrators' perceived barriers and concerns to online adoption and to validate the behavior engineering model (BEM) instrument. Ninety-six respondents from four public universities in Nigeria completed the questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used respectively, to assess barriers and concerns militating against faculty and administrators' online adoption, as well …

Determining The Factors That Impact Enrollment In Cooperative Education At The Community College Level, Lawrence Raymond Miller 2018 Walden University

Determining The Factors That Impact Enrollment In Cooperative Education At The Community College Level, Lawrence Raymond Miller

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The benefits of involvement in work-integrated learning programs, also known as cooperative education have been touted since inception in 1899. Unfortunately, little research has been published related to the factors that impact enrollment within these programs. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that have influenced the historically low enrollment numbers within the cooperative education program at a public community college located in the southeastern United States. Guided by Kolb's experiential learning theory, the conceptual framework provides a direct link between classroom learning and work experience. A qualitative phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of 11 cooperative …

Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The progress of science requires the growth of understanding in both directions, downward from the whole to the parts and upward from the parts to the whole.

—FREEMAN DYSON, 1996, p.2

Creativity does not occur in a vacuum. An enabling environment must exist. Whether creativity is at the breakthrough level or a cluster of micro-level events, it requires environments with special facets—especially collaboration that enables knowledge sharing and idea synthesis.

Broaden Your Passion! Women In Stem, Barbara Oakley

Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium

Women and men develop with equal, often outstanding, abilities in math and science. However, one of women’s advantages is that they also often have a developmental edge over men when it comes to verbal abilities. The result? When women hear the ubiquitous advice to “follow their passions,” they sometimes turn towards their undeniable strengths outside STEM. Some subjects—like STEM—take longer for women and men to master. This talk helps women recognize that it’s sometimes important to be patient with passion—don’t just follow your passions, broaden them!

Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium

It is theorized that mobile technology, in its place alongside other “intellectual technologies” throughout human history, has contributed to significant shifts in the way that newer generations discover, interpret, interact with, and learn new information. The BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) movement in education has been touted as a means of actively and individually engaging these learners with content using technology that many of them may already own or are familiar with. The depth to which this movement has been applied in the medical and graduate medical education communities has been variable, partly owing to the fact that only recently …

Looking For A Needle In A Haystack: Call And Advanced Language Proficiency, Jack Burston, Kelly Arispe

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

The goal of this meta-analysis is to evaluate how instructional technology has impacted advanced second language (AL2) development. Although numerous meta-analyses have been conducted within the CALL literature over the past two decades, they primarily focus upon learning outcomes and related effect sizes. None focus on advanced learning per se. Where AL2 is even mentioned, which is only rarely, little or no attention is paid to critical research parameters within the studies that are analyzed. Most notably, in summarizing learning outcomes, the linguistic competence of learners claimed to be at advanced level is simply taken at face value. So, …

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

A recent and important innovation in design-based research (DBR) is the use of conjecture maps, where researchers explicitly articulate the conjectured mediational relations between their designed goals and the learning designs and contexts. In this paper, we present a design case as an iterative sequence of evolving conjecture maps. As each conjecture map was tested, we revised it to highlight and refine our articulation of the tools and processes that embodied our design approach. Out design case involves small-town and rural community and school libraries in the United States as partners and DBR sites, with the goal of supporting librarians …
