Many cities in the United States have experienced job loss due to a shift from industrial-based to information and service economies, as well as the outsourcing of labor jobs to overseas locations. In the absence of industrial jobs once occupied by low-skilled workers, the problem that compelled this study was a perceived gap between the skills required by the employers who now hire such workers and the actual skills those workers have. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the espoused skills required by employers in a rural region of the southeastern United States to inform the …

Teacher Characteristics And Blended Learning Adoption In Stem-Focused Charter Schools, Omer Faruk Polat

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

As an innovative teaching strategy, blended learning provides an environment where students are able to receive individualized instruction based on their needs. Even though the number of schools that adopt blended models of instruction has been increasing nationwide, the number of studies that explore the relationship between teacher characteristics and blended learning use is limited. This quantitative survey study explored the relationship between selected characteristics of teachers and the levels of blended learning adoption in charter schools with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) focus. The concerns-based adoption model (CBAM) was used as a theoretical lens as it provided tools …

The Adoption And Use Of Technology By Teachers In The United Arab Emirates, Stanford Adolphus Clarke 2020 Walden University

The Adoption And Use Of Technology By Teachers In The United Arab Emirates, Stanford Adolphus Clarke

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractAlthough technology integration in the classroom improves educational outcomes, cultural influences explaining varying integration of teacher technology adoption and use in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had not been explored. This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study explored the influence of culture on perceptions of, use of, and factors influencing the decision to adopt technology among native Arab-speaking (NAS) and native English-speaking (NES) teachers (Phase 1) at a boys’ secondary school in the UAE and how teachers who exhibit differing levels of adoption make decisions about and use technology in the classroom (Phase 2). The technology adoption model was used as the …

Community College Students' Perspectives On The Use Of Gamification In Online Learning, Techmicial Marie Robinson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Educators are striving to use instructional methods that engage and motivate students in online coursework. Recent studies have not addressed whether the use of games as an instructional strategy is associated with improving students' motivation and engagement to learn at the community college level. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of community college students regarding motivation and engagement when taking gamified courses online. Davis's technology acceptance model and Blumer's interactionist model framed the study. The research questions explored a description of the lived experiences of community college students taking an online course that …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Mobile learning environments (MLEs) offer ubiquitous learning opportunities for adults in General Educational Development (GED) programs. However, MLEs have not been integrated into most adult GED programs; therefore, little is known about the experiences of adult learners who use MLEs as part of their education. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how adult learners described making connections within MLEs, how they perceived learning with MLEs, and how they expanded their use of MLEs. The principles of connectivism provided the conceptual framework for the study. Participants were 11 adult learners in GED programs in a Southern urban …

Consensual Assessment In The New Domain Of E-Textiles: Comparing Insights From Expert, Quasi-Expert, And Novice Judges, Anthony Phonethibsavads, Maggie Dahn, Kylie Peppler, Deborah A. Fields, Yasmin B. Kafai

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Establishing what constitutes creativity in a domain is something for which we often look to experts—individuals versed in a domain’s history and able to identify timeworn ideas from fresh ones. Such valuations of creative merit are tied to a familiarity with past and present trends and, therefore, opinions of newcomers are often ignored. However, what about domains that build upon new, unexplored practices? This study examines the creativity ratings of judges with varying expertise in the emergent domain of electronic textiles (or e-textiles). E-textiles are fabrics that have programmable electronics such as sensors and actuators embedded in them toward a …

Development Of Collaborative Tpack Module For Continuing Professional Development In A Higher Education Institution, Vasodavan Vinothini

Student Works (2020-2029)

Teaching and learning in higher education should be more than just a transmission of knowledge. The focus should be on acquiring skills for interacting, applying, evaluating and creating new knowledge as well as problem solving. This can be achieved through social interactions and cognitive process during collaborative learning (CL) using collaborative learning (CL) tools. Therefore, instructors should be able to integrate CL tools effectively into instruction by having a good understanding of incorporating them into appropriate pedagogy and content. Hence, in this study a Collaborative TPACK module was developed for continuing professional development (CPD) to build instructor’s skills and knowledge …

Design Variables For Self-Directed Learning In Mooc Environment, Tai Wang, Juhong Christie Liu, Tonggui Li

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) can meet education needs from diverse social, cultural, and access backgrounds and require a minimal cost of resources from learners. To successfully scaffold large and distributed populations to learn effectively in these MOOCs, the design needs to optimize self-directed learning. In this paper, the researchers investigated the design variables for MOOCs' learning environment that allowed learning choices made by learners. With this study, the researchers developed a 21-item questionnaire based on a review of the literature and their MOOC design and implementation practices, Massive Online Open Course Learning Environment Design Questionnaire (MOOC-LED). The researchers used …

Educators have been using social media to enrich learning activities and promote interactive and collaborative learning. Under the context of dynamic learning – the way that 21st century’s learners learn, the new challenges are: how educators design such a setting to effectively integrate certain social media tools to improve learning, and what the influential factors might be that educators need to focus during the design. In this article, we employ the concept “logistics” to explain and redefine dynamic design, dynamic learning, and dynamic thinking, which furthermore formulate the framework of the study. This article presents a critical content review of …

Current Issues in Emerging eLearning

With the growing popularity of connectivist MOOCs, the aim of facilitators has increasingly shifted from helping students meet completion-oriented goals to encouraging meaningful engagement among participants. In this paper, we study the relationship between platform of engagement and learner participation, controlling for relevant demographic factors of participants including gender, age, and level of education attained. Our study employs four distinct measures of participatory engagement: autonomous learning, knowledge reproduction, information networking, and scholarly engagement. We find that on the public platform of Twitter, participants were more likely to exhibit meaningful engagement patterns across all measures studied than they were on the …

Digital Tools In The Classroom: Measuring The Effectiveness, Jeff Carpenter 2019 Central Connecticut State University

Digital Tools In The Classroom: Measuring The Effectiveness, Jeff Carpenter

Current Issues in Emerging eLearning

The purpose of the study is to determine if, compared to traditional practice, digital practice increases student measuring accuracy on an authentic task. Therefore the study explores the relative efficacy of digital versus traditional practice for increasing student measurement skills in applied situations. Research tells us that students’ poor performance with measuring skills is directly related to lack of practice. To increase the ability to accurately use a ruler, Junior High, Intermediate and Middle Schools students require more time on task than they typically spend practicing this skill. Since more time is hard to come by in the classroom, educators …
