Background: The main language of instruction for teaching medicine in most of the Arabic-speaking countries is English then French to a lesser extent. To our knowledge, Syria is the only Arab country that uses Arabic as the language of instruction in its medical colleges.

A Recognition Study Testing The Psychological Validity And Development Of Illness Scripts, Eugène J.F.M. Custers

Purpose: This study investigates whether the recognition memory phenomena previously found for script-based stories also apply to illness scripts, the hypothesized mental structures expert physicians apply in medical diagnosis. In addition, the development of these scripts is investigated.

Method: Second and sixth year students and experienced family physicians participated; the influence of typicality of information (prototypical versus atypical statements), textual presence (verbatim or implicit), and delay (15 min or 1 week) on recognition memory discrimination was investigated in a 3×2×2 ANOVA design and on recognition reaction times (RTs) in a 3×2×2×2 ANOVA design. Implementing other teaching modalities may help to better prepare physical therapy graduates. Medical and nursing student education have effectively used simulation to help prepare students for clinical practice. Standard setting of exams is an important element of medical education. This is understandably so: it is difficult to qualify for medical school in the first place and once there, most assessments are high-stakes and failure rates need to be justified. As a consequence, numerous procedures have been established to determine cut-off values for exams. A cut-off value is the score of an assessment that determines who passes the exam and who does not. The cut-off in turn determines the failure rate, which is the percentage of students below the cut-off value who fail the exam.

Purpose: Medical doctors do not always calibrate accurately in terms of their diagnostic performance, which means that their evaluation of their diagnosis differs from their actual performance. Inaccurate calibration can lead to maltreatment and increased health care costs. The p-value has dominated research in education and related fields and a statistically non-significant p-value is quite commonly interpreted as ‘confirming’ the null hypothesis (H0) of ‘equivalence’. This is unfortunate, because p-values are not fit for that purpose. This paper discusses three alternatives to the traditional p-value that unfortunately have remained underused but can provide evidence in favor of ‘equivalence’ relative to ‘non-equivalence’: two one-sided tests (TOST) equivalence testing, Bayesian hypothesis testing, and information criteria. TOST equivalence testing and p-values both rely on concepts of statistical significance testing and can both be done with confidence intervals, but treat H0 and …

In this paper, we examine how Indigenous and non-Indigenous adolescents identify media influences as health/wellness related. We conducted research over a six-week period in two alternative high school settings: a culture-based Indigenous education program at one school and an arts-based program at another school, both in the same small, Western Canadian city. We taught students from both programs the principles of critical media health literacy. Small groups of students from the Indigenous program wrote narratives. Then small groups of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in an arts-based education program converted these stories into graphic novel/comic book format. Findings indicated a broad …

Background: There is a shortage of practicing occupational therapists in the Philippines, with approximately one Filipino occupational therapist per 30,000 stakeholders. One of the possible consequences is the experience of burnout among therapists.

Method: A two-phase mixed methods study using a sequential explanatory approach was used. The first phase involved the administration of the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) with a survey questionnaire that supplied demographic and work-related factors through an online platform. The primary aim of this study was to examine relationships between digit ratio (2D:4D) and game‐related statistics in professional and semi‐professional male basketball players. The secondary aim was to quantify differences in mean 2D:4Ds between starting and reserve players.

Methods

Using a cross‐sectional design, 93 male basketball players from the professional Australian National Basketball League and the semi‐professional South Australian Premier League were measured in‐season for height, mass, and 2D:4D, with game‐related statistics collected end‐season. Background; The purpose of this paper is to examine any association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and markers of health among 6 and 10 year old Irish children. Methods; A total of 917 children (6 year olds, N=459; 10 year olds, N=458) from 11 primary schools in Cork (Ireland) participated. Body composition, blood pressure (BP), CRF (550-metre distance run) and school socio-economic status (SES) were assessed. Children were classified as low or high fitness based on run-time standard deviation scores (SDS).
