Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive degenerative brain disease and the primary cause of dementia. At an early stage, AD is generally characterized by short-term memory impairment, owing to dysfunctions of the cortex and hippocampus. We previously reported that a combination of exercise and 40-Hz light flickering can protect against AD-related neuroinflammation, gamma oscillations, reduction in Aβ, and cognitive decline. Therefore, we sought to extend our previous findings to the 5-mo-old 3×Tg-AD mouse model to examine whether the same favorable effects occur in earlier stages of cognitive dysfunction. We investigated the effects of 12 wk of exercise combined with 40-Hz …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Introduction. Competitive and rock climbers primarily rely on anaerobic energy metabolism, and acidosis may limit their performance. It is supposed that supplements that improve buffering capacities of the body, like β-alanine (BA) and sodium bicarbonate/citrate (SB/SC), may be useful in this sport. The aim of the study was to explore the efficacy of co-supplementation of BA and SC on climbing performance. Material and methods. 13 climbers (age 40.2 ±7.9 years, height 175.4 ±8.4 cm, body mass 68.6 ±13.9 kg, UIAA metric 9.2 ±0.8) were randomly assigned to the supplement (SG; n = 7) or control group (CG: n = 6). …

Serving Our Children During And After Covid-19: Application Of Shepherd Leadership At Home And School, Kong Wah Cora Chan 2022 University of Bristol

Serving Our Children During And After Covid-19: Application Of Shepherd Leadership At Home And School, Kong Wah Cora Chan

Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice

Shepherding is one of humanity’s oldest known occupations, dating back thousands of years (Leman & Pentak, 2004). Yet, within the way of a shepherd lies hidden leadership treasures, which are especially valuable for parents, caregivers, and teachers during and after COVID-19. Shepherd leadership is a specific form of servant leadership. Although there are many similarities between shepherd leadership and servant leadership, theoretical or empirical studies of shepherd leadership are far behind servant leadership. The most referenced texts of shepherds and shepherd leadership can be found in the Bible. This paper examines the thinking, doing, and being of shepherds and the …

The Opportunity To Play, Ezekiel Spieker 2022 Southeastern University - Lakeland

The Opportunity To Play, Ezekiel Spieker

Classical Conversations

In many states across America, homeschool students are welcome participants in community activities and school events. From sports, musical recitals, and band, to speech and debate, these students are embraced with open arms and allowed the opportunity to participate in events offered through their local public school. In Missouri, however, this is often not the case once a child ages out of local little leagues. The Missouri State High School Activities Association, otherwise known as MSHSAA, completely prohibits homeschool participation in these activities at the Junior High level. For those in high school, MSHSAA mandates that schools require a homeschool …

Physical Activity In Education, Isabella Sierra 2022 Southeastern University - Lakeland

Physical Activity In Education, Isabella Sierra

Classical Conversations

A plethora of research and studies have been compiled on the benefits of physical activity in daily life, yet it is still lacking in the realm of education. Across all grade levels, an increase in physical activity would be beneficial to students’ academic performance and overall health. In education as a whole, there is a large amount of sedentary behavior associated with the classroom and learning. Elementary students have shorter attention spans than adults, and demand larger amounts of time for exercise and hands-on learning. Implementing short physical activity breaks or incorporating physical activity lessons create a better learning environment …

The Effects Of Wearable Health Technology On Cancer Survivors’ Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, And Weight: A Meta-Analysis, Daphne Blount, Rui Zhang, Anne Blaes, Zan Gao 2022 University of Minnesota

The Effects Of Wearable Health Technology On Cancer Survivors’ Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, And Weight: A Meta-Analysis, Daphne Blount, Rui Zhang, Anne Blaes, Zan Gao

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Wearable health technology (WHT) has been suggested as a health intervention in preventing or reducing health risk factors in clinical populations. Cancer survivors exhibit risk factors prior to cancer diagnosis and acquire comorbidities as a result of their treatment. These conditions may increase likelihood of cancer recurrence and reduce quality of life by inhibiting survivors’ physiological function and predisposing them to other maladies. Several studies have suggested WHTs as an intervention in mitigating these risks. However, there lacks a comprehensive review of the current evidence to determine the efficacy of WHT interventions. Thus, a literature search of WHT studies within …

Cross-Cultural Studies Of Motivation In Physical Education: A Systematic Review, Bo Shen, Xinyang Lu, Jin Bo

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Researchers have investigated whether or not motivational constructs that originated primarily through Western beliefs could be applied or generalized to different cultural contexts. A number of theoretical frameworks have received cross-cultural attention but findings remain inconclusive. The purpose of this study is to synthesize the characteristics of current cross-cultural studies of motivation in physical education. The initial search identified 380 articles from seven databases and 19 studies were included after removing duplication and screening against eligibility. The syntheses support the generalizability of motivational constructs, but reveal that the magnitudes of motivation and the associations between motivation and educational outcomes are …

Path Associations Between Preservice Physical Educators’ Beliefs About Epistemology And Their Value And Self-Efficacy For Sport Education And Teaching Games For Understanding, Ken R. Lodewyk 2022 Brock University

Path Associations Between Preservice Physical Educators’ Beliefs About Epistemology And Their Value And Self-Efficacy For Sport Education And Teaching Games For Understanding, Ken R. Lodewyk

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Teachers’ beliefs about epistemology – that is, their personal broad mental representations about the nature of reality, knowledge, and how people know and learn – have been associated with the many educational outcomes both in the classroom and in physical education. Little is known about whether these beliefs predict physical educators’ value (i.e., interest, importance, like, and usefulness) and self-efficacy (i.e., confidence in performing) for using constructivist teaching models such as sport education and teaching games for understanding. As a result, this study examined path associations from beliefs about epistemology (epistemic worldviews and epistemological beliefs) to value and self-efficacy for …
