Debt And Negative Net Worth Among Near Retirees, Susan M. Brown
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Going into retirement, near-retirees are looking at increased debt levels, which can offset any asset accumulations and reduce retirement income. By using data from the 2008 Health and Retirement Study (HRS), this study examines the debt and negative net worth of near-retirees. This study further investigates what factors are associated with the likelihood of holding consumer debt, holding mortgage debt, and holding home equity debt over holding no debt, and what factors are associated with the likelihood of holding negative net worth over holding a high level of net worth among near-retirees. The study sample includes 3,745 individuals between the …

The control group was taught with a conventional, teacher-directed, method using textbooks and worksheets. The experimental group was taught with computers and an Internet based inquiry method. Centennial Founders Day Keynote Address: Refocusing Our Lens: The Founding Of Connecticut College In Historical Context, Linda Eisenmann '75
Centennial Speeches
The author writes that the founding of Connecticut College in 1911 deserves its own attention, and that as a historian of education, she could tell the story while setting it within a wider context of higher education. She takes us through the founding, adding a wide-angle perspective, and ends with a speculation on why this story seems so less present than it should be in the daily life of this campus. What does the Centennial mean for how Connecticut College understands its past and its present? What value is there in examining its history bit by bit over the course …

Financial Disagreements And Marital Conflict Tactics, Jeffery Dew, J Dakin
Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications
Recent studies have suggested that relative to other types of marital disagreement, financial disagreements are more problematic for couples. Using data from the National Survey of Families and Households (N = 3,861 couples), we tested whether different types of marital disagreements predicted self-reported marital conflict tactics. Considering the findings overall, financial disagreements were among the consistent top predictors of conflict tactics, including using heated arguments more frequently than calm discussion. Contrary to previous studies, however, disagreements over housework also predicted conflict tactics about as strongly as financial disagreements. Husbands’ reports of financial disagreements were more closely associated with conflict tactics …
