Introduction: Reading is a doorway to life participation. Only about one-third of fourth graders have read at grade level for the last three decades. Multiple views on what constitutes skilled reading emphasize decoding and greater variability among comprehension-related skills. Scarborough’s Reading Rope is the most specific in defining discrete skills necessary for adequate reading comprehension. This study aims to understand how elementary-level general education teachers and speech-language pathologists define “reading comprehension” and describe their practices in assessing and developing these skills. The study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on elementary teachers' perceptions of their working conditions and immediate professional plans in North Carolina. It compared 2018, 2020, and 2024 data to identify differences in perceptions of the pandemic. Using a nonexperimental quantitative design, the study analyzed archived data from the North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Survey (NCTWCS) obtained from the North Carolina Education Research Data Center (NCERDC). This mixed methods sequential explanatory study examined how elementary teachers’ perceptions influenced the fidelity and effectiveness of behavioral interventions in K–5 public schools. Grounded in Bandura’s (1986) Social Cognitive Theory and Fixsen et al.’s (2019) Implementation Science Framework, the study explored the relationship between teacher confidence, professional development, and outcomes related to student achievement. Quantitative data showed reductions in behavior incidents, in-school suspensions (ISS), and out-of-school suspensions (OSS) from fall to spring, while qualitative data from surveys and interviews emphasized the need for sustained support, differentiated intervention plans, and a strong school-wide culture. Dual language immersion programs have continued to grow in North Carolina, providing students with learning opportunities focused on bilingualism, biliteracy, and sociocultural competency. This qualitative case study explored the influence of ecological systems on internal stakeholders (teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators) within one dual language strand within a school’s Chinese immersion program in North Carolina. Purpose: We report the qualitative findings from a survey of elementary teachers regarding reading instruction. The purpose is to extend on quantitative findings in a previously described survey to gain a more in-depth understanding of Australian elementary teachers’ approaches to the literacy block in their schools: how this is used, who makes instructional decisions, and how teachers respond to these. Method: A web-based survey was used to collect data from Australian elementary teachers about their perspectives regarding reading comprehension instruction. In a recent study, we examined the diversity of main characters and family structures in 90 award listed Australian children's picture books from 2019 and 2020. We found some progress compared to past research (Adam and Barratt-Pugh, 2020; Adam et al., 2021) in terms of culturally diverse representation, though still with predominantly white main protagonists (Adam and Urquhart, 2023). Similarly, we found some increased representation of diverse family structures, albeit with notable absences of LGBTQIA+, step, foster and blended families (Adam et al., 2024). Children’s creativity in expressing themselves through traditional media, such as drawing, remains strong and reflects their keen awareness of their surroundings. Involving children in the design process provides a valuable opportunity to understand their perspectives. This study engaged 47 five-year-old children to explore their preferences for outdoor play environments through their drawings. The methodology involved analysing these drawings to gain insights into the children’s understanding and desires related to playground experiences. Building on the success of the Transforming Transitions project conducted with ten Western Australian Independent Schools (Barblett et al., 2023), this study extended the inquiry into school engagement and the transition process. The project was reimagined to deepen collaboration with schools, focusing on two key areas: first, fostering meaningful engagement with young learners and their families during the transition to school by drawing on their funds of knowledge; and second, centering the perspectives of children as active participants in their transition, acknowledging their experiences and the role of family-school engagement in shaping their sense of belonging.

This project sought to gather the voices of young children to investigate whether a co-development process could be used to develop a transition to school charter with children and their teachers. Children's experiences of the transition to school can have far-reaching effects on their continuing educational journey. Picture-Mnemonics And Letter-Sound Fluency In Kindergarten, Bryn E. Alexander

This action-research study examined whether embedded picture-mnemonic letter cards improved kindergarten students’ letter-sound accuracy, fluency, and enjoyment compared with plain alphabet cards. Twelve students in a private early-childhood school participated in a six-week intervention embedded within daily phonics instruction. Students were randomly assigned to either a control group using plain lowercase letter cards or an experimental group using embedded picture-mnemonic cards. Data were collected through baseline and post-intervention Letter-Sound Accuracy (LSA) and Letter-Sound Fluency (LSF) probes, weekly enjoyment ratings, and observational field notes. Results indicated that students using picture-mnemonic cards demonstrated notable gains in both accuracy and fluency, along with …
