Reading By Ear: Music Teachers' Roles In And Attitudes About Identifying Students With Dyslexia In Kentucky's Public School System, Alison Ward Brown

Identifying students with literacy disabilities, such as dyslexia, efficiently in public schools is crucial for early intervention. Literacy and musical skills share common neurological pathways, so music educators possess a skill set that could be advantageous in screening students. This study utilized a descriptive research design to identify music educators’ roles in the identification of students with dyslexia/reading disabilities in Kentucky’s public schools, and their attitudes about those roles. Data was collected through a survey completed by Kentucky public school music teachers. The use of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) as a class exercise was investigated to ascertain its effectiveness for student wellbeing. Although EFT has been validated in clinical settings, studies have not yet established whether this approach could be applied in classrooms to curb anxiety and improve wellbeing. A pragmatic, mixed methods study was conducted with 138 students in northern Australian primary schools. Student anxiety dissipated over two stages of intervention. Aside from class tapping sessions, students sometimes tapped surreptitiously, and teachers applied tapping for themselves on occasions. Students generally preferred a quieter, individual approach during class tapping sessions. Broader themes …

: Pedagogy grounded in neuroscience is an influential approach in Australian schools, despite concerns regarding teachers’ beliefs in several neuromyths that go on to pervade their practice. This paper reports on a small study that explored teachers’ beliefs and implementation of brain-based learning in one Australian primary school whose pedagogy is specifically underpinned by neuroscience. Survey data collected from 14 teachers were analysed using simple descriptive statistics and content analysis. Findings indicated that these teachers, despite having some accurate brain-based knowledge, were still prone to endorsing common neuromyths regardless of the school’s teaching and learning framework, years at the school, …

Drawing on the concept of structuring contexts (Berchini, 2016) this article explores a white teacher’s understanding of teaching writing in a no-excuses charter management organization network. Through a deductive analysis, the author traces how the teacher’s beliefs about language were shaped by the CMO’s emphasis on efficiency, influencing how he acted on and adapted centralized curriculum and assessment practices. Documenting the ways that whiteness works within the writing curriculum and assessment practices despite stated broader organizational commitments to culturally relevant teaching, the author shows how the curriculum appropriated texts written by People of Color while the assessment practices prioritized correctness …

Students often experience cognitive conflicts when trying to interpret negative numbers’ order and values because they do not correspond to their prior whole number knowledge. One way to trigger students’ cognitive conflicts and support their conflict resolution meaningfully is through stories. Thus, I used a temperature-related mathematics storybook—Temperature Turmoil—to highlight the cognitive conflict students often experience because of relying on the integers’ absolute value and introduce conflict resolution (i.e., integers have both absolute value and directed value). การวิจัยนี้มีจุดประสงค์ 1) เพื่อสังเคราะห์คุณลักษณะความเป็นครูมืออาชีพของครูประถมศึกษาในระดับนานาชาติ 2) เพื่อศึกษาสภาพจริงและสภาพที่พึงประสงค์ของความเป็นครูมืออาชีพของครูประถมศึกษาในกรุงเทพมหานคร กลุ่มตัวอย่างในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ประกอบด้วยครูประถมศึกษาในพื้นที่เขตกรุงเทพมหานครทั้ง 4 สังกัด ได้แก่ สังกัดสำนักงานคณะกรรมการการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน สังกัดสำนักงานคณะกรรมการส่งเสริมการศึกษาเอกชน สังกัดกรุงเทพมหานคร และสังกัดกระทรวงการอุดมศึกษา วิทยาศาสตร์ วิจัย และนวัตกรรม จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 389 คนซึ่งได้มาด้วยวิธีการสุ่มตัวอย่างแบบแบ่งชั้น และตัวอย่างสำหรับการสัมภาษณ์คือ ครูประถมศึกษาจำนวน 12 คน และครูเจ้าฟ้ามาหจักรีจำนวน 6 คน และเครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล คือ แบบสัมภาษณ์และแบบสำรวจ วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วย การใช้สถิติเชิงพรรณนาได้แก่ ร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1) ผลการสังเคราะห์คุณลักษณะของความเป็นครูมืออาชีพของครูประถมศึกษาในระดับนานาชาติจากทฤษฎีและเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้องจึงได้เกณฑ์ของคุณลักษณะของความเป็นครูมืออาชีพของครูประถมศึกษาทั้งหมด 5 ด้านประกอบด้วย ด้านพฤติกรรม ด้านการทำงานร่วมกับผู้อื่น ด้านความมีปฏิภาณไหวพริบ ด้านทัศนคติ และด้านความเชี่ยวชาญ 2) ผลการศึกษาสภาพจริงและสภาพที่พึงประสงค์ของความเป็นครูมืออาชีพของครูประถมศึกษาในกรุงเทพมหานคร เมื่อจำแนกตามสังกัดต่าง ๆ พบว่าภาพรวมครูประถมศึกษาส่วนใหญ่ให้คะแนนด้านพฤติกรรมมากที่สุด (x̄ = 4.84, S.D. = 0.12) ส่วนปัญหาที่พบคือการตรวจสอบประสิทธิภาพการทำงานของครูประถมศึกษาโดยควรมีการประเมินผลงานจากสถานการณ์จริง หรือบริบทสภาพจริง เพื่อสะท้อนคุณลักษณะความเป็นครูมืออาชีพของครูประถมศึกษาได้อย่างชัดเจนมากยิ่งขึ้น

"For this study, we reviewed documentation from and about the campaign’s loudest proponents, particularly national and local leaders. We analyzed anti 'CRT' websites, toolkits, Facebook groups, and media appearances to understand their shared language, tactics, and logic. We analyzed survey and interview data from educators affected through early fall 2021, drawing on survey responses from 275 members of a set of national teacher organizations that support teachers who tend toward teaching on race and diversity, as well as an interview study of 21 'equity officers' (EOs) in district diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles across the country. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine practices for school resource officers (SROs) in elementary schools to gain a compilation of best practices for this position in schools. Through this study, three district leaders, three law enforcement leaders, and 12 law enforcement officers serving in elementary schools from three school districts in North Carolina completed 10 open-ended response items and fifteen 5-point Likert scale response items. This study was designed to explore the relationship between Internet Reciprocal Teaching (IRT) and young students’ online text evaluation skills. It built upon previous research that identified four main online reading comprehension skills: locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and communicating information that are similar yet more complex than offline reading comprehension skills. In the majority of previous research, participants were in fifth grade or above. This study aimed to observe the processes younger students go through while reading online text. Participants were second grade students in a Midwestern suburban elementary school.
