A Modified Flipped Classroom: Action Research Using An In-Class Flip To Measure Student Achievement And Perceptions Within A High School Multimedia Course, Jamie Mercer
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this action research study was to implement and evaluate the impact of a modified flipped classroom approach on students’ ability to use Adobe Premiere Pro in a Multimedia course at Jefferson High School. The current pedagogical model for teaching the video editing software is not conducive to student achievement and students need additional instruction after in-class demonstrations. A major issue in teaching software programs using in-class demonstrations is that when students do not understand the applications of the program, the teacher has to stop demonstrations and walk around the classroom to help struggling students while other students …

Learning Through Discourse: Impacting Fractional Understanding Through Virtual Discourse, Laurie A. Gentry-Goodale
Theses and Dissertations
There is a strong need for fifth-grade students to become proficient in mathematical problem-solving using fractional computations because it will have a lasting impact on student achievement. Traditionally, mathematics is taught inside a brick-and-mortar classroom, grounded in rote memorization of facts, rules, and formulas. In recent years, more elementary students have enrolled fully in online learning environments, which emphasize on students becoming problem-solvers, specifically in fractional computation. The NCTM strongly encourages using mathematical discourse as an instructional method but employing mathematical discourse, but its applicability to online math learning is not well understood. This study addressed students' problem-solving skills, mathematical …

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: There is increasing focus on the development of high-quality simulation models for medical education. Cadaveric models, although considered more realistic, may be difficult to obtain and costly. The advent of three-dimensional (3D) printing has offered a low-cost, reliable, and reproducible alternative. This study sought to compare the utility of 3D-printed to cadaveric models for training in transcutaneous injection laryngoplasty (TIL).
METHODS: A simulation course with a cross-over design was employed. Video laryngoscopes were utilized for both the 3D and cadaveric models to assess the accuracy of injection into the vocal fold. Pre-procedure and post-procedure surveys were administered to evaluate …

How Comics Impact The Process Of Instructional Design, Aaron M. White
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite growing evidence and professional consensus of the educational benefits of comics, the medium has not received much explicit attention within instructional design literature. This very lack of attention leaves instructional designers (IDs) and subject matter experts (SMEs) without the necessary means to integrate comics into higher education curriculum. Drawn from theoretical and empirical evidence found in Mayer’s Multimedia Learning (2021) and Cohn’s The Visual Language of Comics (2014), this dissertation explored how incorporating comics as anchor text into three different courses (face-to-face, hybrid, and online) at three different higher education institutions in the Midwest impacted the dynamics of the …

This dissertation presents a multiple-case study investigating the influence of using nudges to encourage students in a flipped classroom to complete coursework in a timely manner. Using two sections of the same course, the study explored the effectiveness of reminder and self-regulation nudges in promoting on-time completion of assignments among undergraduate college students. The research questions addressed the influence of reminder nudges on coursework completion and the efficacy of self-regulation nudges in encouraging timely completion behaviors. Findings revealed that while reminder nudges initially encouraged accountability and on-time coursework submission rates, students experienced nudge fatigue over time. Self-regulation nudges prompted students …

Job interviews are a critical step to obtaining employment, however, the social demands of job interviews are often difficult for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). Both the use of technology (e.g., mixed-reality simulation, video modeling, virtual reality) and attending inclusive postsecondary education programs that teach independent living skills and employment skills have been effective in improving job interview skills and employment outcomes. Using an underpowered randomized-control trial research design, the researcher examined whether using mixed-reality simulation technology to practice job interview skills improved job interview skill acquisition for young adults with ID compared to face-to-face practice that is typically conducted …

Background: A resurgence in teaching coding in primary school classrooms has led to a pedagogical swing towards using physical computing and coding to develop students' use of algorithms, computational thinking, and problem-solving skills. Two obstacles impede the optimal development of these objectives: the availability of a suitable pedagogy and an instructional sequencing model for primary school teachers to effectively present coding and computational thinking concepts and skills to students in alignment with their developmental stage. Objective: This study aims to address both obstacles by introducing the 3C Model, a newly developed instructional sequence grounded in established pedagogies and designed to …
