Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision
This pilot study applies Computer-Aided Text Analysis (CATA) to examine Language Style Matching (LSM) in counseling transcripts, offering a novel metric for counselor education and supervision. Analyzing 50 suicide-focused and 100 general counseling sessions using LIWC-22 software, we found high LSM scores in both contexts (suicide-focused: M = 0.906; general: M = 0.903). Bayesian analysis provided moderate evidence (BF01 = 5.048) in support of the null hypothesis, indicating no significant difference between the two session types. The consistently high LSM suggests counselors effectively build strong alliances and align with client goals across topics. LSM analysis provides an objective measure of …

Limitations Of Using Large Language Models For Automated Essay Scoring, Thomas A. Fink
Theses
Background: Automated essay scoring (AES) is a challenging deep learning problem. The two most widely used methods for predicting essay quality scores, supervised learning-based and LLM-based, have their own limitations. Although supervised learning-based methods are more accurate, they only predict a score and do not offer descriptive feedback to students. On the other hand, LLM-based methods can offer rubric-guided feedback but are known to be less accurate.
Methods: This work focuses on improving the accuracy of state-of-the-art LLM-based AES methods. We began by thoroughly investigating why these methods were performing poorly for certain datasets and certain examples. This led us …

As artificial intelligence writing tools become increasingly prevalent in educational settings, students often report feeling alienated from AI-generated content, describing it as lacking their "authentic voice." This article presents a pedagogical approach that addresses this challenge by repositioning students as curators of their authorial identities rather than passive consumers of AI-generated text. Through a dual curation methodology combining quotation glosses with style prompting, students develop multiple authorial voices for different rhetorical situations while maintaining agency over their writing process. The approach builds on classical rhetorical traditions while leveraging contemporary AI capabilities, creating a framework where students collaborate with AI tools …
