This dissertation explores the phenomenon of Secondary Racial Battle Fatigue (SRBF) and its impact on student affairs professionals of color in higher education. Grounded in critical qualitative inquiry and the lived experiences of participants, this study examines how emotional, behavioral, and physiological effects of SRBF manifest both through professionals’ direct racialized experiences and their roles supporting students enduring racial trauma. Framed by Racial Battle Fatigue (Smith, 2010) and Secondary Traumatic Stress (Figley, 1995), the research addresses three guiding questions: (a) How does SRBF manifest in professionals of color? In today’s increasingly polarized educational landscape, debates over diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have reached a critical juncture. Anti-DEI policies and legislation are not only reshaping educational policy but are also producing tangible adverse effects on teacher behavior—often creating chilling effects that undermine authentic multicultural education. The COVID-19 pandemic led to unprecedented school closures, forcing administrators to take decisive action to radically change the educational system. The imperative to switch to remote learning transformed the dynamics of teaching and learning, leading to both immediate and long-term academic and social emotional consequences for all stakeholders. Emotional Disturbance (EmD) remains one of the most inconsistently defined and assessed categories under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), leading to widespread misidentification that disproportionately affects minority students. This study investigates systemic biases in EmD assessment practices, highlighting how subjective criteria and a heavy reliance on clinical judgment perpetuate disparities in identifying African American and Latino students in special education. To better understand these biases, the study sought to identify which assessment components school psychologists most frequently utilized when making eligibility determinations for EmD. This study explored the experience of eight master-level students in completing a group memoir project in a Human Development and Counseling course. The project required students to read a memoir and analyze the character using human development theories with a group of students. Adopting a phenomenological approach, themes were generated to describe the students’ experiences, including making the course more engaging, contextualizing diverse human development experiences, building emotional connections with the characters, developing critical thinking about application of human development theories, enhancing learning experience with teamwork, and balancing the structure and flexibility in the project. This study explores the integration of complexity theory and interdisciplinary approaches in clinical psychology education and training. Responding to growing concerns about the fragmentation of knowledge and the limitations of reductionist models in mental health education, this qualitative research investigates how faculty and graduate students conceptualize and engage with complexity, systems thinking, ethics, culture, and curricular innovation. Using semi-structured interviews with clinical psychology professors and students, the study applies thematic analysis grounded in interpretive paradigms and educational philosophy. Students in co-requisite mathematics classes represent a diverse group of learners, with one thing in common: their previous math performance. This research investigates how playing culturally responsive educational games is associated with students' learning and experience of flow. Quantitative analyses revealed no significant differences in flow scores across demographic groups. However, students with stronger STEM identities reported experiencing higher levels of flow, on average. Math self-efficacy was not significantly associated with flow experiences. ANOVA results indicated that flow was not significantly related to final course grades (F = 0.465, p = 0.707, η² = 0.008), suggesting that students’ self-reported flow …

This study examined the perceptions of both teachers and school administrators of the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in High Schools in the northeastern United States. Using a qualitative design, data was collected through an anonymous survey of teachers who presently teach International Baccalaureate Diploma Program courses. Additional data was collected through conducting semi-structured interviews of acting principals of schools that offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. This study aimed to investigate both student and teacher perceptions of implementing metacognitive strategies in a high school biology classroom, as well as the impact on students’ self-regulated learning. It explored feelings of safety among high school students and their classroom teacher, focusing on their perspectives regarding school safety measures and school resource officers (SROs).
