Teacher Recruitment And Retention As A School Improvement Strategy, Carl Bryan
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
Fewer issues have received more attention by education researchers than understanding the global teacher shortage, especially in public schools. Concurrent with this issue is the concern that the rate of teacher hires is insufficient to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse body of students. This phenomenon gains significance considering policymakers’ calls for restructuring the way schools do business to meet the needs of students and schools in the era of school accountability. It is crucial not to overlook the substantial body of research which suggests how the practices under No Child Left Behind have complicated the retention of teachers …

Streamlining The Cleaning And Analysis Of Eye Tracking Data For Cross-Recurrence Analysis, Michael V. Rosalia
McNair Summer Research Program
The use of multimodal data to understand and support collaborative learning has grown in popularity recently as it allows researchers to study complex learning tasks from different facets. However, multimodal analysis is often computationally complex and often requires a strong set of technical skills and mathematical understanding to clean and process the data, creating barriers that restrict researchers without advanced programming skills from conducting these analyses. There are existing software packages that can help with this process, but they are often piecemeal requiring the user to understand how to put them together and what best practices may entail. This can …

Like A Scientist: A Method For Introducing Disciplinary Literacy In The Science Classroom, Elizabeth L. Kuperus
Masters Projects
To be literate within a particular area of study requires an understanding of the literary disciplinary norms practiced in that field. Within the science classroom, students are often expected to engage with scientific literature, yet are unable to fully grasp the material since they have not been taught the disciplinary literacies associated with science. This project evaluates research surrounding the area of scientific disciplinary literacy and suggests how it could be used to inform classroom instruction. Disciplinary literacy skills need to be explicitly taught and modeled to demonstrate how students can approach texts and other literacy practices as a scientist. …

Fostering Academic, Social-Emotional, And Civic Growth Through Discussion-Based Pedagogy In Secondary Classrooms, Ethan O'Brien
Masters Projects
Discussion-based pedagogy provides students with opportunities to practice collaborative and critical thinking skills that have proven impactful on reading and writing scores, interpersonal communication skills, and civic engagement. However, inexperienced discussion facilitators—as well as instructors who may not have clear purposes or objectives for discussion in their classrooms—may not be familiar with best practices and strategies for structuring rigorous, equitable, and engaging student talk. This project begins by investigating potential factors contributing to students' lack of interpersonal skills in the classroom, and ultimately identifies discussion-based pedagogy as a key solution. A theoretical basis for the merits of discursive learning is …

Climate Change Denial Messages As Post-Truth, David H. Kahl Jr., Ahmet Atay
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Post-truth messages are hegemonic forms of communication intentionally designed to create false narratives that perpetuate power and marginalize others. These messages make differentiating fact from fiction difficult. Students are especially susceptible to believing and internalizing post-truth messages due to their high level of interaction with social media and the neoliberal period in which they have been raised. One type of post-truth message that has become especially prevalent is climate change denial messages that advance a neoliberal agenda. This article will apply tenets of critical communication pedagogy (CCP) as a means by which to recognize messages that deny climate change as …

Critical Communication Pedagogy At The End Of The World, Tyler S. Rife
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
This essay draws upon my experiences teaching the undergraduate course, “Communication at the End of the World,” to argue for an approach to critical communication pedagogy (CCP) contextualized by and reflexively responsive to planetary-scale ecological crises. I outline how five commitments have come to guide my classroom’s explorations through our topic of “end-times” communication: (1) Anthropocentrism and speciesism participate in the maintenance of social hierarchy; (2) environmental justice and social justice are intimately entangled projects; (3) ecological crisis is (re)made concrete, embodied, proximal, and implicative; (4) critique of language involves critique of humanism and humanist historicization; and, (5) ecologically just …
