This paper examines the research related to the impact of 1:1 technology initiatives on student achievement. There are studies that show students using 1:1 technology have improved test scores in a variety of subjects, and there is literature that highlights specific methods for using 1:1 technology in the classroom. The product of this literature review with application emphasis is an Art of Reading class which addresses reading comprehension and the role that art teachers can play in contributing to achievement. The class is based on research findings and integrates eight strategies to improve reading comprehension. The strategies include: 1) promote self-efficacy, 2) set goals, 3) provide choice, 4) build relationships, 5) ease anxiety 6) teach reading comprehension strategies, 7) spend time reading, and 8) spend time reflecting. The Art of Reading class also includes mindfulness practices, self-selected reading material, and artwork projects based on the text.

This paper inspects the role of storyboards and graphic organizers, vocabulary, cultural relevancy/responsiveness, reading fluency and reading engagement, as each relates to reading comprehension growth in middle school English Language Learners. The use of storyboards and graphic organizers provides a visual component, which offers another way for students to examine the text. Vocabulary knowledge helps students decode unknown terminology while they are reading and that can lead to better understanding. Motivation is a hot topic in education. It is not uncommon for many students give up when challenges arise, while others rise to the occasion to overcome challenges. This literature review addresses many studies showcasing the benefits of academic perseverance, pointing to the need for all students to possess this trait. In understanding this, the research uncovers ways in which teachers are able to influence their students to overcome such challenges and persevere to complete academic activities. These strategies focus primarily on two different areas: fostering autonomy and intrinsic motivation in the classroom and teaching self-regulation strategies for overcoming challenges.

Beyond The Carrot: Strategies To Increase Reading Motivation In Students From Low Income Schools, Brenna D. Schueller

This thesis investigates the role that motivation has on reading amongst students in low income schools. Research regarding specific strategies to engage learners from low income schools shows that using a wide variety of higher-order thinking questions, incorporating structured, research based reading programs, making reading relevant to students’ lives, teaching discussion strategies, and preparing students for college contribute to increasing reading success for students in low income schools. A professional development presentation application from these findings that outlines this research and strategies is then suggested. Lastly, professional application, limitations of the study, and future implications of the research are presented.

This study reviews the available literature to identify the barriers to technology adoption, which encompasses professional, efficiency-driven uses of technology by teachers and students, and to technology integration, which encompasses pedagogically sound, student-learning-driven uses of technology in the classroom. It also seeks to explore the relationship between the ongoing emphasis and pressure to adopt and integrate technology and occurrences of teacher burnout. Factors influencing technology adoption were determined to include demographic factors, teacher beliefs and attitudes toward technology, and self-efficacy. The rationale for this project is rooted in the importance of students engaging in effective study habits in preparation for exams at the collegiate level. Many investigations into study habits rely on student self reporting. In this project we use online student activity data to supplement survey responses and attempt to determine whether an online study skills module a) impacted exam performance and b) changed student study habits. Students in online and blended courses were provided with an online study skills module that recommended effective study strategies. Making EAP course outcomes congruent with post-secondary demands requires a needs analysis, in which a target situation analysis is imperative (Bocanegra-Valle, 2016; Hyland, 2016; Cabinda, 2013; Rosenfeld, Leung, & Oltman, 2001; Upton, 2012). This article details the theoretical considerations for a needs analysis, and reports the quantitative findings of a target situation analysis completed for a pre-sessional EGAP program at a Canadian College. 51 Professors from the college and a university completed questionnaires ranking academic tasks necessary for postsecondary success in all four language skill areas (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). 25 of the 43 language tasks were identified as …

Aim/Purpose The dynamic nature of the information systems (IS) field presents educators with the perpetual challenge of keeping course offerings current and relevant. This paper describes the process at a College of Business (COB) to redesign the introductory IS course to better prepare students for advanced business classes and equip them with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills demanded in today’s workplace.

Background The course was previously in the Computer Science (CSC) Department, itself within the COB. However, an administrative restructuring resulted in the CSC department’s removal from the COB and left the core course in limbo.
