Captains Of Erudition: How The First-Generation American University Presidents Paved The Way For The Student Development Profession, Drew Moser
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
This paper seeks to explore the origins of college administration, particularly student development, as a profession unique from faculty positions by researching the influence of key American university presidents at the dawn of the 20th century. This paper explores precipitating factors leading to the rise of this new type of president, scornfully coined “Captains of Erudition” by Veblen (1918), and the emergence of the student development field. An evaluation of this generation of presidents is offered, followed by a section highlighting key consequences of this pivotal period for higher education today. Original presidential writings from the early 1900s by key …

Athletic Leadership And Chronically Anxious America, Gary Ross
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
We are fast becoming (or perhaps already have become) a society that to its detriment values security over risk and safety over adventure. As such, we consistently sacrifice opportunities to grow through challenge. Perhaps the most unfortunate consequence of this orientation toward safety is that our nation, now more than ever, lacks leaders of character. Consequently, America is faced with what I believe to be the defining problem of our time. We need a way to develop leaders who can forge ahead with self-control and moral clarity in the midst of growing uncertainty. Thankfully, while it may appear there are …

Abstract: This article reports research that critically examined our teacher education outdoor education pedagogy. The purpose was to use visual ethnography to critique our teaching over twenty years of annual five-day bush-based residential camps. The bush camps were situated in an outdoor education programme contributing to a four-year undergraduate teacher education Bachelor of Physical Education in Aotearoa New Zealand. The research method involved photo-elicitation of selected photographs representing students’ experiences and our practices. We each wrote about the photographs using introspection and recall to create a layered narrative analysis reflecting on the educative focus of the images. We responded to …

A Contextual Examination Of Mississippi's Principal Preparation Programs And Their Impact On Student Achievement, Wilner Bolden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Principal preparation programs have faced increased scrutiny concerning their effectiveness in preparing K-12 administrators (Bennet, Gooden, Lindauer, & Petrie, 2001). Due to consistently stagnant academic performance of schools across the nation and reported shortages of quality school leaders, principals have been pushed front and center as the targeted school leader responsible for school failure. Because principals received their preparation from either a traditional or alternate route principal program, there is a need to re-exam the effectiveness of these programs to enhance principal practice and principal performance. The purpose of this quantitative study, a contextual examination of Mississippi's principal preparation programs …

The purpose of this research study was to determine whether a relationship exists between student achievement, as measured by school Quality of Distribution Index score, and school leadership based on staff perceptions of school leadership, as measured by the Survey of Supervisory Behavior. The leadership of seven schools was assessed by staff members in five different sub scales of leadership domains: human relations, trust/decision making, instructional leadership, control, and conflict. The seven schools sampled were comprised of four rural or county schools and three city schools. The subjects for this study were principals of standalone schools containing grades five, six, …

Building on transformational leadership theory, 43 individuals from various new product development (NPD) teams were studied to understand the relationship between the project managers’ use of lateral influence tactics and team commitment as perceived by new product development team members. An explanatory correlational study was conducted to examine these relationships. Data were collected via questionnaire about each NPD team member’s view of the project manager’s use of lateral influence tactics and the NPD team member’s perception of team commitment. Perceptions of procedural justice were also tested for mediation. The study found that there is a moderate positive relationship between each …

The Difference In Act College Readiness Benchmarks Between Avid And Non-Avid Students, Stephany Eley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study examined the difference in college readiness (as measured by the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks) between high school students who were enrolled in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) for three or more years and students who were never enrolled in AVID. A causal comparative research design was employed to compare high school students from a Central Florida school district containing both AVID high schools and non-AVID high schools. AVID students were demographically matched to non-AVID students for race, gender, socio-economic status (as measured by free and reduced lunch status), Title 1 status, and grade level. Independent t tests …

More Than Just A Number: Student And Educator Perceptions About The Transition To Ninth Grade, Jody K. Sloat
Theses and Dissertations
The transition to ninth grade can be a difficult time for adolescents. New students confront the unknown on the first day, and their anxieties combine with new surroundings, teachers, and older students, to make for a stressful experience (Benner & Graham, 2009). Some students enter high school more prepared to meet academic and social challenges, while others have not matured enough to realize success (Graber & Brooks-Gunn, 1996; Steinberg, 2011). This lacking in maturity leads to high numbers of behavior problems and failures in ninth grade (Alspaugh, 1998; Frey, Ruchkin, Martin & Schwab-Stone, 2009). According to stage-environment fit theory, these …
