Leadership For Sustainability: Pedagogical Practices That Empower Learners To Become Leaders, Heather Burns, Jr Wolf
Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Higher education is recognizing the need to prepare leaders who can take action to address complex and pressing sustainability challenges. Increasingly, this need is being addressed through the addition of sustainability programs and courses. However, academic courses often focus on sustainability content or issues and don’t necessarily foster the practices, ways of being, and skills needed to be an effective sustainability leader. According to a recent action research study of sustainability leadership development at Portland State University, sustainability leadership identity and skills can be developed through a combination of reflective practice, community building, and experiential learning. This session will provide …

National Development: Education In The Republic Of Kiribati, Julie N. Church, Dr. Macleans A. Geo-Jaja
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Republic of Kiribati, located in Micronesia, has been recognized by the United Nations as one of the world’s poorest nations. One crucial aspect of the underdevelopment of this small Pacific atoll is that of education. Education plays a major role in the empowerment of people and contributes immensely to national capacity building.

Women Education In Rural China, Qing Xia, Dr. Karen E. Hyer
Journal of Undergraduate Research
About the topic. In all aspects, China is integrating itself into the world. Almost any significant change to take place in China would capture the attention of the world. The education of rural women is drawing attention from society because there have been more girls to drop out of school than boys. They need to be educated and well informed so that they can recognize and protect their natural and human rights. They should be able to realize their human functional capabilities such as “control over one’s environment1”. My intent in this project has been to help them find a …

Review Of Literature And Research Of Informal And Social Networks, Dustin Stucki, Dr. Julie Hite
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The overall goal of the proposed research is to synthesize the current state of research and literature on organizational networks—specifically informal and social networks. Internally, informal networks consist of the relationships between people within the organization; these networks may not align with the formal organizational chart. Externally, informal network relationships connect people with others outside the organization; these network relationships create the conduits through which knowledge and resources can be brought into the organization. While these networks are extremely important for successful organizations, little has been done to understand the strategic roles networks play within educational organizations. Four questions were …

Equity And Tuition Tax Credits: A Case Study In Utah, Emily Eyring Robertson, Dr. E Vance Randall
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Financial inequities in families and communities lie at the root of many of America’s educational inequalities, including the diminished presence of low-income families among private school populations. Educational equity requires the equal treatment of all children except in cases where equal treatment fails to meet a particular educational need, such as is the case for children disadvantaged by poverty (Catterall 1982, 3; Berne and Steifel 1999). Improved accessibility to the private sector for children from low-income families counteracts some of the obstacles created by poverty and strengthens equity.

The group of 150+ Lost Boys in Salt Lake City is continuing to grow, as is the need to facilitate their education, skill training and employment, and integration.

Journal of Undergraduate Research
There is a great need in our community to unite different religious, ethnic and racial groups. In 2001 an “Alliance for Unity” was formed in Utah. Its Statement of Purpose and Mission Statement were read to LDS wards throughout the State. It reads “our Alliance for Unity will seek ways to bring people together for the benefit of all. We will encourage specific projects of common purpose. Our overriding goal is to help people cross boundaries of culture, religion and ethnicity to better understand and befriend one another”. Many including Elder M. Russell Ballard and Jon Huntsman signed this statement.

Positive Collaboration: Beyond Labor Conflict And Labor Peace, Richard Boris
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
Institutions of higher education collectively constitute a major economic concentration that ranks—by whatever measure: resources, budgets, endowments, employees, constituencies—among the major industries in the United States. The unionized academic U.S. workforce ranks sixth among organized labor. Yet, when compared to the top-tier manufacturing industries of steel or automobile or to national unions such as the UAW or the Teamsters, both the public institutions of higher education and their academic unions lack national visibility, lack influence on national debates, and, most tellingly, lack major successes in the quest for public monies. Health care, the environment, energy policies, and the current global …

The Impact Of Principal Knowledge, Attitudinal Favorability And Organizational Structure On Emergency Preparedness In New Jersey's Public Schools, Scott Rocco
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
School violence, an issue documented across the United States, has put a focus on school emergency preparedness for school principals. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand the school principal’s level of emergency preparedness in New Jersey public schools and how the confidence and behavior of principals affect emergency preparedness.
This study had three research questions that centered on the principal’s behavior and confidence. The population for this survey was New Jersey public school principals ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade schools, vocational, technical or institute schools, public schools for the handicapped, and magnet schools. Each selected principal …

International Students, Byu, And Brain Drain, Steve Stancliff, Dr. Maclans A. Geo-Jaja
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Brain drain is a term used in development literature to refer to the idea that the academically and technologically trained human capital of developing countries are “drained” away to the greener pastures of highly developed nations and their labor markets. This research endeavor was designed to evaluate the attitudes and intentions of BYU students from lesser-developed countries towards taking their BYU education back to their countries of origin to promote development. In addition, I sought to evaluate BYU’s role in facilitating students’ ability to do so.

This updated History and Philosophy of Andragogy is mainly limited [with a few exceptions] to a chronological history and the accompanying philosophy of andragogy, in lines with when the English language documents were published and the personal descriptions of events were recorded. Some of these documents, however, presents aspects of events and ideas which recount the years and context prior to the time in which they appeared in published form. To date, nearly 400 documents have been discovered, but space limitation in this paper allowed the inclusion of only a fraction of that number. Each of 15 time periods is …

Numeracy
This is the first of several columns that will focus on the mechanisms by which new ideas become accepted by a culture, offering some familiar examples, deriving basic principles from these examples, and applying them to the problem of promoting quantitative literacy in an educational system. In this essay we describe how new concepts become embedded in a culture through their connections to existing ideas, and use this principle to suggest strategies of discourse about numeracy that promote it among various constituencies in the culture.

Faculty Perceptions Of Teacher Professionalism In Christian Schools, James A. Swezey, Donald E. Finn
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Able school administrators understand that teachers are their most valuable asset. If Christian schools are to effectively serve the families who entrust their children to their care, teachers must demonstrate both professional competency and godly character. This study was an investigation of faculty perceptions of teacher professionalism at ten Christian schools in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. An online survey of 24 items was completed by 230 teachers (males=30; females=200). The survey instrument was a modified version of Tichenor and Tichenor’s (2009) four dimensions of teacher professionalism. Data were analyzed using a multivariate analysis-of-variance (MANOVA) …

A Study Of Census Driven Data In Single Parent Families And Their Implications, Lynn Coyle
Theses and Dissertations
Demographics for all school districts in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York were disseminated and analyzed in order to better understand where the highest percentage of single-parent households were located, how school districts support parents and children of single-parent households and how they could better assist them. As an outcome of this analysis, needs were identified in order to assist school leaders in creating an in-school support program. Researching the problems, challenges, and obstacles children face while living in single-parent households were an aid in this study. A preventative, mental health approach, an aspect of public health, is needed in …
