Argument Education In Higher Education: A Validation Study, Paul E. Mabrey III 2017 James Madison University

Argument Education In Higher Education: A Validation Study, Paul E. Mabrey Iii

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Argument education can play an important role in higher education for leadership development and responding to increasing calls for post-secondary accountability. But to do so, argumentation teachers, scholars, and practitioners need to develop a clearer definition and research agenda for the purposes of teaching and assessing argumentation. The research conducted here contributes to this project by first establishing a definitional construct and observable behaviors associated with learning and practicing argumentation. Second, an argument education assessment instrument was created based off of the literature-supported definition of argumentation. Third, debate and argument education subject matter experts reviewed the definition, behaviors, and assessment …

Buying Equal Student Achievement Opportunities, Abbott W. Keesee

Dissertations, 2014-2019

The majority of a school system’s budget is spent on personnel. In order to use this tremendous amount of money efficiently it is important educators understand the impact different spending priorities, specifically total per-pupil expenditures, teacher salary, principal salary, pupil/teacher ratio, and pupil/support personnel ratio have on student achievement and how these inputs are moderated by a district’s population density and wealth. Spending data from all the school divisions in Virginia were examined using public spending data from the Virginia Department of Education, and population density and wealth statistics from the Office of Budget Management, US Census Bureau, and Commonwealth …

United States Navy: Publications

p.35: STATEMENT OF VADM WALTER E. CARTER, JR., SUPERINTENDENT, UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

Admiral Carter. Chairman Coffman, Ranking Member Speier, and distinguished members of this committee, thank you for inviting me to discuss the Naval Academy's sexual assault prevention and response efforts. At the Academy, we have a responsibility to ensure that every single member of the Brigade of Midshipmen is afforded an opportunity to develop professionally in an environment which fosters dignity and respect. Additionally, we produce one-third of our service's unrestricted line officers every year. If we get it right, and we have every intention to do this …

Researching Holistic Democracy In Schools. A Reponse To "Examination Of The New Tech Model As A Holistic Democracy", Philip A. Woods

Democracy & Education

Bradley-Levine reported in her article how she created an opportunity to explore research data with the aim of examining the degree to which New Tech schools were democratic in the sense conceptualized by the notion of holistic democracy. My response is in three parts. The first sets out my understanding of the significance of the model of holistic democracy and the purpose of the framework. The second is a review of Bradley-Levine’s findings, with reflections that occurred to me as I worked through these. The third comprises my conclusions. The framework has been applied, in my judgement, in a diligent …

Classroom Organizational Structure In Fifth Grade Math Classrooms And The Effect On Standardized Test Scores, Dallas Marie Lane 2017 University of Southern Mississippi

Classroom Organizational Structure In Fifth Grade Math Classrooms And The Effect On Standardized Test Scores, Dallas Marie Lane

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between the classroom organizational structure and MCT2 test scores of fifth grade math students. The researcher gained insight regarding which structure teachers believe is most beneficial to them and students, and whether or not their belief of classroom organizational structure differs based on the number of years of classroom experience and/or degree held.

The results of this study showed no significant difference in the standardized test scores of students in a self-contained classroom compared to the students in a departmentalized classroom. Though there was no significant difference …

The Influence Of Administrators On Literacy Instruction Through The Promotion And Selection Of Professional Development, Lucy K. Johnston-Josey 2017 University of Southern Mississippi

The Influence Of Administrators On Literacy Instruction Through The Promotion And Selection Of Professional Development, Lucy K. Johnston-Josey

Dissertations

Literacy is a key component to success in school and in life. Literacy has been a focus of education since 1965 when President Jimmy Carter announced a “war on poverty.” Since then, history has shown that educators should place an emphasis on literacy within schools. Because literacy is so important, I set out to explore how administrators influence literacy through the promotion and selection of professional development.

Mississippi was chosen as a basis for the study because it falls below the nation in terms of literacy rates on the National Assessment for Educational Progress assessment. Nineteen participants from four school …

The focus of this study was to measure elementary, middle, and high school administrators’ beliefs regarding the appropriateness of the Mississippi Statewide Teacher Appraisal Rubric domains, as well as their perceptions regarding the Mississippi Statewide Teacher Appraisal Rubric’s overall alignment with the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium standards. This was a quantitative study that investigated whether a statistically significant difference existed between administrators’ beliefs regarding the appropriateness based on their grade level assignment. A five-point scale ranging from Strongly …

Administrators’ Beliefs Of The Organizational Effectiveness Of The Mississippi Association Of Independent Schools, Anthony Shane Blanton 2017 University of Southern Mississippi

Administrators’ Beliefs Of The Organizational Effectiveness Of The Mississippi Association Of Independent Schools, Anthony Shane Blanton

Dissertations

The Mississippi Association of Independent Schools was born out of the turbulent years of the Civil Rights Era. Plessey v. Ferguson in 1896 had established the doctrine of separate but equal facilities, including schools. While the decision in Brown v. Board of Education, handed down by the Supreme Court in 1954, ruled that no student could be denied admittance to public schools because of race, the state of Mississippi continued to maintain separate schools for Blacks and Whites. Even after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was designed to end a number of racial inequities, was passed, Mississippi and …

The Impact Of Participation In A Coherent Career And Technical Education Course Sequence On Student Discipline Outcomes, Natalie Castro Lopez 2017 University of Texas at Arlington

The Impact Of Participation In A Coherent Career And Technical Education Course Sequence On Student Discipline Outcomes, Natalie Castro Lopez

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

Disproportionalities in school discipline exist for children of color and those in other marginalized categories. Researchers consistently discover that the disparities cannot solely be contributed to differential behavior, indicating that these students receive different treatment and disciplinary processing. Seemingly, ineffective discipline systems and practices in schools are one of many components contributing to the disproportion. Although changing the inequities in schools and in disciplinary approaches is warranted, analysis of the potential for existing programs to curtail negative student behavior and reduce disciplinary infractions such as referrals, suspensions, and expulsions in all races and groups of students is necessary. A possible …

Student Government Elections: The Experiences Of Candidates And Their Perceptions Of Political Efficacy, Jennifer Fox 2017 University of Texas at Arlington

Student Government Elections: The Experiences Of Candidates And Their Perceptions Of Political Efficacy, Jennifer Fox

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

This qualitative study fills a void in the research on collegiate student government elections by examining the experiences of 10 candidates for president and vice president at large, public, four-year universities in Texas. Participation in student government has been shown to support students’ learning and lead to future political engagement. However, until this study, little has been understood about the experiences of candidates in the student government elections process. Using political efficacy (Campbell et al., 1954) as a theoretical framework for the coding and analysis of the data, several themes emerged, including the students’ motivations for running for president or …

This study investigated how effectively U.S. Courts of Appeals judges’(1) political ideology, as measured by party of the appointing president or judges’ DW-nominate scores; (2) legal developments, as measured by the 1991 Amendments to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; (3) judicial caseload carried by courts of appeals three-judge panels; and (4) plaintiffs’ gender predict liberal-pro-employee and conservative-pro-employer voting in K-12 Title VII racial discrimination cases brought by African-American plaintiffs decided between 1964 and 2015. The study used logistic regression as its primary statistical tool. The principal findings for this group of K-12 decisions are: (1) political …

Ideological And Legal Determinants Of U.S. Courts Of Appeals Judges' Voting In K-12 Idea Reimbursement Cases Involving Children With Learning Disabilities, Tara L. Stephens

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the seminal federal legislation entitling children with disabilities to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). The law permits parents who contend their child was denied a FAPE to contest the education offered the child by removing their child to a private school, paying tuition for that education, and then seeking to recover those payments from the district. Under the IDEA, parents may prevail in such proceedings where they show the child was denied a FAPE by the school district, and the private program they selected met the child’s special needs. Legislation amending …

Applied Weaving: Mapping Creativity Into Every Strand Of A Curriculum, Jonathan P. Garra

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

The purpose of this paper is to explore the value of adding creativity skills into curriculum mapping documents at the elementary and middle school level, with the goal of gaining some clarity regarding the intrinsic value and ubiquity of teaching for creativity. The language for the maps was taken from Weaving Creativity Into Every Strand of Your Curriculum (Burnett & Figliotti, 2015). The maps were developed after observations of and meetings with classroom teachers in order to assure their accuracy and authenticity. Because the intended purpose of a curriculum map is to provide a sweeping view of targeted content and …
