What Would A Teacher Do?: A Case Study On Alternative School Teachers' Perceptions On Cyberbullying, Darius Cortez Philpot
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this case study was to discover the perceptions of alternative school teachers regarding how they define, intervene, and detect incidents of cyberbullying in their classrooms at Rock City Alternative School (pseudonym). The theory guiding this study is Albert Bandura’s social learning theory and Herbert Kelman’s social influence theory. Bandura (1977) believes that most human behavior is learned through observation, imitation, and modeling. In social influence theory, Kelman (1958) provided a stable foundation for understanding influences by socializing media. The data collection process included semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and document analysis. Data analysis was ongoing and occurred throughout …

Addressing Bias From Faculty Through Implementing Bias Training, Tori A. Henning
Masters Projects
Research has indicated that college students experience bias from college faculty on a regular bias. However, there is no mandated training for college faculty on the various forms of bias and the impact that it can have on students’ ability to be successful. While bias influences many students, students of color, women, LGBTQ+ students, and students from of different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds experience bias at greater rates than white students. This project explores how the various forms of bias, the training that college faculty receive, student development theory, and how bias impacts students’ success and their sense of belonging …

Faculty Perceptions Of Health Professional Students’ Hybrid-Online Learning Strategies: A Multi-Center Qualitative Study, Evan M. Pucillo, Gabriela Perez, Leiselle Pilgrim
Health Professions Education
Purpose. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the utilization of hybrid-online and fully-online instruction in health professional education. Physical (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) programs have become increasingly reliant upon this mode of instruction. Therefore, it is important to understand advising strategies for this educational environment. Faculty advisors may endorse specific learning strategies over others. However, advising strategies of faculty are not well represented in the scientific literature. Methods. A qualitative phenomenological design used a six-item, open-ended questionnaire to purposefully survey faculty members teaching and advising students in hybrid-online PT and OT graduate programs during COVID-19. Dedoose® v.9.4 qualitative software (Los Angeles, …

Teacher attrition, the percentage of teachers who leave the field of education, has been a critical issue for many years. From general education teachers to special education teachers, from elementary to secondary, from public to private schools, and from rural to urban schools, much human and monetary capital are being spent to recruit and retain quality teachers; however, with very little success. Some research reports that the turnover rate is much larger for teachers than in other professions in the United States (Ingersoll, 2001). Ingersoll exclaimed that the teacher attrition rate was “twice the rate of nurses and five times …

Dissertations
This phenomenological study described the experiences of student military veterans in a community college with physical and psychological health needs. Each participant enrolled in the community college by utilizing the benefits of the post-9/11 GI Bill and transitioned from active duty to civilian life. More than 40,000 programs in the United States are designed to assist veterans transitioning to civilian life (Carter, 2013). Further, the health needs and transition experiences of military veterans have been well-documented. Numerous programs seek to reduce barriers; however, many veterans experience challenges when using the programs or services (Perkins et al., 2019; Aronson et al., …

Homegrown: Pastor Advocacy For Victims Of Sex Trafficking, Julie Heifner
Dissertations
Human trafficking consists of both sex trafficking (ST) and labor trafficking (LT) and is a growing problem for the United States. The Federal Human Trafficking Report (2019), states that Missouri is ranked ninth in the country for active criminal human trafficking cases. This issue is particularly prevalent in our churches because churches serve vulnerable populations and predators may be drawn to churches. Religious academic literature about pastor advocacy for victims of ST is lacking, while popular news sources reference case after case where pastors are the predators. This study consisted of nine Christian pastors who currently served in a pastoral …

Transition From Clinician To Academician: A Heuristic Inquiry Of Role Change, Work-Role Conflict And Identity Development In Occupational Therapy, Theresa Rhett-Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Transitioning can be a daunting experience for occupational therapists shifting to an academic job as new faculty with new roles, responsibilities, and expectations. As newcomers to academia, occupational therapists can become overwhelmed by meeting the demands of the academic roles of teaching, scholarship, and service. Through a heuristic approach, I explored the lived experiences of occupational therapists who transitioned to academia from the clinical setting to better understand role change, work-role conflict, and academic identity development during the transition process. The person-environment-occupation-performance model provided a framework to understand the findings and give meaning to the OT faculty transition experience. The …

Characteristics Of Public School Principals: Analysis Of The National Teacher And Principal Survey, Jessica True, Misty Wilburn
Graduate Research Conference
Gender and racial diversity in the principalship, or the lack thereof, has been a topic for research for several years. While the concerns about general disparity are widely discussed, it is equally important to consider where underrepresented groups are typically hired, such as urban schools with high-poverty levels. Discrepancies in hiring have implications for promotion into superintendent and other educational leadership positions, as well as for overall financial compensation, where minority groups such as females and races other than White are forced to take lower-level jobs or jobs at the same level for less pay than their White male counterparts. …

This study examined the dilemma ESL teachers experienced as the educational system shifted from the usual modus operandi of in-person lessons to the uncharted virtual learning environment (VLE). ESL teachers, in one of the largest urban districts in Louisiana, accumulated additional roles and responsibilities that were unique to the teachers of the English learner (EL) population enrolled at their schools.
Data collected to answer the research questions were the product of single and focus group’s interviews with five ESL elementary and middle school teachers in Freedom District. State and district emergency response to COVID-19 guidelines, along with instructional artifacts, were …

Effective Classroom Management Strategies, Matthew Taffe
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
As educators, we often find ourselves in situations where students aren’t always following along with what we say and at times are being a distraction for the class. Having experienced this numerous times, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to take a look at what strategies are out there and practice applying them to find what works best. The approach I took for this was to complete an autoethnography. An autoethnography is an approach to research and writing that seeks to describe and systemically analyze personal experience in order to understand cultural experience (Ellis, 2004; Holman Jones, 2005). …
