Does The Doctrine Of "Separation Of Church And State" Matter?: Examining The Experiences Of Black Christian Families In Massachusetts Public School System, Stephanie Denise Okwudi

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Students have full freedom under the law to practice religion in public schools. This is especially important for Black students, for whom religion has been shown to improve academic achievement and to mitigate many stressors they face. However, due to misinterpretations of the “separation of church and state” (or the “establishment clause” of the First Amendment), schools may inadvertently suppress the religious freedom of students instead of actively providing a safe space for religious practice. For this research, a single embedded intrinsic case study was conducted to determine how the separation of church and state doctrine manifested in the experiences …

Although Texas high school counselors and advisors are responsible for ensuring students across the state have access to CCMR information, support, and resources, not much was known about Texas high school counselors/advisors’ self-efficacy as it relates to postsecondary planning or …

Student Engagement In Tennessee Ninth Grade Post-Covid Classrooms, Rebecca Houser 2024 Lincoln Memorial University

Student Engagement In Tennessee Ninth Grade Post-Covid Classrooms, Rebecca Houser

Ed.D. Dissertations

During the school closures associated with COVID-19, researchers found student engagement decreased, partially due to the concurrent increase in the number of adolescents diagnosed with problematic internet use and internet addiction. At the time of this study, there was limited research related to student engagement after students returned to face-to-face instruction. Moreover, when students returned to in-person school after the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, a paradigm shift to internet-based learning occurred, which meant every student had a computer and spent more time learning online than before the pandemic. Unfortunately, this paradigm shift occurred while students were returning to school with …

Serving Gender-Expansive Students In Catholic High Schools: Understanding The Perspectives Of Catholic School Leaders, Cassandra Elyse Gonzales

LMU Theses and Dissertations

While there are many calls to maintain Catholic values in National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) and (arch)diocesan standards for Catholic school leaders, there is still a lack of guidance on operationalized support for gender-expansive students. This lack of clarity hinders the ability of leaders of Catholic schools to support and accompany gender-expansive students in their schools. This lack of guidance results in unclear leadership, which can adversely affect the well-being of gender-expansive students in Catholic schools. This qualitative study explored the experiences of principals and presidents of Catholic high schools in the United States as they work with gender-expansive students …
