Factors Influencing Stakeholder Support Of A Bond Referendum In A Rural Kansas School District, Joshua M. Woodward
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine factors that influence stakeholder support of bond elections targeted for capital improvements in a rural school district in Kansas. The study uses existing research to identify factors that influence school bond referendum success. To better understand the factors identified in the research literature that influence stakeholder support in the focus district, data were gathered from stakeholders within the school district of focus through a perceptual survey and focus group interviews.
The availability of research on school bond referendum success and failure is plentiful. However, specific research on factors that influence rural school …

Peer Effects And Social Networks In An Mba Program, Zinaida Foltin
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In this dissertation, I explore peer effects and social networks among MBA students in a Canadian business school. The unique feature of the data collected for this research is that the students are administratively assigned to small groups, providing plausibly exogenous variation that allows me to identify causal peer effects. Chapter 1, “Peer Effects in an MBA class”, establishes the existence and magnitude of the effects of peer characteristics on academic outcomes of MBA students. It shows that peer effects are heterogeneous across courses and student characteristics. Chapter 2, “Testing team allocation rules”, uses these results to find the allocations …

Eelgrass Restoration In San Francisco Bay: An Interdisciplinary Stated Preference Classroom Experiment, Camille M. Antinori
Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics
This paper aims to integrate experiential, interdisciplinary approaches into environmental economics courses through a stated preference analysis for eelgrass beds harboring aquatic plants foundational to many estuaries and coastal zones. It argues that such approaches are necessary in undergraduate education to support real-world needs in oceans and climate policy. Through collaboration with ecologists and peers, students developed willingness-to-pay measures of $35 and $42 for a 10-year restoration program for 200 acres of eelgrass (Zostera marina) in the San Francisco Bay based on open- and closed-ended elicitation formats. The experiment provides an example of overcoming the challenge of orienting …

Introduction To Special Topic: Rural Education Finance And Policy, Christiana Stoddard, Eugenia F. Toma
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications
This special topic takes stock of the current state of rural education finance and policy research. Taken together the articles in this special topic highlight a major point. Rural districts and schools not only differ from those in urban areas but also differ from one another. This is perhaps not surprising given the heterogeneity of school size, community size, demographics, and the degree of rurality of schools across the United States. The articles pose a challenge for policymakers. Policies that serve one state or one rural community may not be relevant or helpful to another. Policy solutions must recognize the …

Promoting Equity: Differences In Financial Resources Allocation Between Urban Early College High Schools And Traditional Public High Schools, Steven Hinshaw
Thomas C. Hunt Building a Research Community Day
This exploratory study was designed to analyze the distribution of financial resources to predict student achievement in early college high schools and traditional public high schools. The premise was to discover if there were differences in the predictor variables for allocation. If so, then the allocation could be changed in traditional public high schools to address the needs of those students unable to attend early college high schools thus creating more equity for those underserved students.
This study included 12 of Ohio’s first early college high schools and the 36 traditional public high schools in the public districts where the …

Hence, this study developed a structural model that explains the determinants of Economics students’ behavioural intention and utilization of online libraries using social influence, self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, self-efficacy, and attitude. The study adopted a correlational design. The study randomly selected 150 post-graduate students from five universities in South-East Nigeria. The instruments for data collection were self-report questionnaires. Path model and paths coefficient were used to …

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The purpose of this paper is to shine light on the way the school systems have been teaching and how it is affecting students in a negative way. It focuses mainly on teaching to the test and how it stops students from learning creatively and also does not let teachers teach the way they might want to. It also shows how this is a wicked problem and is more than a small school system issue. This impacts students, teachers, and the society we live in. The results of this research was that there were a lot of other authors that …

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
College students live in a world where financial struggles and hardships take away from a lot of their freedoms after graduation. The ongoing student debt issues have crippled many of their freedoms and put limitations on the various luxuries they should be able to enjoy after completing the long journey of getting a degree. Through a few simple yet effective methods I think that there are ways to combat this wicked problem, things such as lowering the price of tuition, distributing more financial aid to students, and reducing the rate of interest attached to loans that some students may be …

Institutional Context Drives Mobility: A Comprehensive Analysis Of How Academic And Economic Factors Relate To International Student Enrollment At United States Higher Education Institutions, Natalie Irby Cruz
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
International student enrollment (ISE) has become a hallmark of world-class higher education institutions (HEIs), particularly as global student mobility has grown exponentially worldwide in the last several decades. Although the United States (U.S.) has welcomed the largest numbers of international students since the 1950s, ISE shrunk by 10% in the previous three years from an all-time high of 903,127 students in 2016/2017 (IIE, 2019). A synthesis of research studies about international student mobility and enrollment highlights the significant role that academic and economic rationales play for international students who choose the United States. This quantitative, ex post facto study focused …
