That racially motivated conflicts occur in schools is an indisputable fact that becomes evident upon review of both academic literature and popular media. Events such as the Jena 6 incident (Maxwell & Zehr, 2007), school wide racially motivated riots (latimes.com), and court rulings (theithican.org) are distressing examples that racial barriers are real and potentially dangerous for many students in this country. Readers’ Theater is an enjoyable and worthwhile activity in its own right. Moreover, the process of rehearsal in Readers’ Theater, by its very nature, entails repeated reading—a form of reading practice, which research has suggested has a positive effect on the development on reading fluency and ultimately on reading comprehension.

The 1974 Lau decision requires that U.S. public schools ensure a meaningful education for students learning English. English as a Second Language (ESL) placement is an institutional response to the linguistic needs of these students; however, its academic implications remain largely unexplored. Using nationally representative data from the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS), the effects of ESL placement on college preparatory course enrollment and academic achievement of language minority students are estimated, first with fixed effects regression models and then with multi-level propensity score matching techniques. This study reports on an internal evaluation of an in service training in Indonesia called English Language Training for Islamic Schools (ELTIS). The data obtained from questionnaires were cross-referenced through document reviews and focus group discussions. A total of 187 Islamic junior high school teachers responded to the questionnaire. The questionnaire asked about any improvements they expe- rienced, the support from their schools to apply the new knowledge and skills, and the relevance of the training to their needs. The results showed that the English abili- ty and the teaching skills of the teachers had improved. Support from the schools …

This paper documents the implementation of a year-long drama project that was conducted with adult immigrant English as a Second Language (ESL) students at Asian Human Services, a community-based organization in Chicago. In this paper I will use a process of rigorous reflection to explore the design and implementation of a cross-cultural simulation workshop as a means of developing intercultural sensitivity among Korean public school English teachers in Daegu, South Korea. After introducing the workshop design I will describe in detail my experience of delivering the workshop. I will overlay Milton J. This paper examines the implications that the relationship between teacher language awareness and communicative peace may have on educational programs for teachers of English for speakers of other languages (ESOL). The evaluation begins by analyzing proposals set out by the applied peace linguist Francisco Gomes de Matos, who suggests that ESOL teachers should teach communicative peace as an element of communicative competence, and also that education programs should provide training to support this approach.
