The Viability Of Bilingual Education Programs In Nevada, Alain Bengochea, Elizabeth Greer

Policy Issues in Nevada Education: Policy Papers

Problem. Approximately 15% of emergent bilinguals (EBs; commonly referred to as English learners) in Nevada demonstrated proficiency in math and English language arts in contrast with the general student population, which achieved proficiencies of 42% and 55% in these subjects, respectively. Therefore, there is a critical need for programs that are responsive to EBs’ linguistic, cultural, and academic strengths. Purpose. This policy paper discusses the need for alternative educational supports for EBs, the effectiveness of bilingual education models compared with prevailing English instructional models, and the possibility of bilingual programming as a viable option in Nevada. Recommendations. Nevada could require …

The Effectiveness Of Cooperative Learning In Enhancing Students’ Vocabulary For Speaking, Ong Si Juan 2021 Universiti Malaya

The Effectiveness Of Cooperative Learning In Enhancing Students’ Vocabulary For Speaking, Ong Si Juan

Student Works (2020-2029)

Traditionally, English classes in Malaysian schools are rather teacher-centred and this method tends to impede students’ speaking skills. Coupled with the lack of vocabulary, it exacerbates their difficulty in using appropriate expressions in their speaking skills. Attempting to address these problems, the researcher used the Cooperative Learning (CL) method in her study because research has shown that it benefits greatly from the social interaction between students and improves the students' speaking skills, as its structured interaction design facilitates the accomplishment of group goals. This study examined the effectiveness of the CL framework in elevating L2 students’ vocabulary knowledge which consequently …

Recruitment Of International Students Through A Synthesis Of English As A Second Language Instruction, Social Justice, And Service Learning, Daisuke Akiba 2021 CUNY Queens College

Recruitment Of International Students Through A Synthesis Of English As A Second Language Instruction, Social Justice, And Service Learning, Daisuke Akiba

Publications and Research

Universities across the U.S. have increasingly emphasized internationalization, leading to rising numbers of international students attending U.S. institutions of higher education. However, these students tend to gravitate toward larger research-intensive universities with many other institutions seeing no increase in international student enrollments. Little is known concerning how to attract international students to regional institutions lacking name recognition. To address the above and promote internationalization through increasing the presence of students from abroad, an academic department at a regional public U.S. college used needs analysis to develop a pilot program for Japanese university students (N = 13). The program involved a …

My Journey As An Emergent Bilingual, Cynthia Villarreal Cantu 2021 University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

My Journey As An Emergent Bilingual, Cynthia Villarreal Cantu

The Qualitative Report

This autoethnography was conducted at an elementary school not far from the South Texas border. I documented how my journey as a kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade student has impacted me to become a better educator. Through this qualitative study, I planned to determine if my childhood experiences as an emergent bilingual learner have made an impact in my teaching and the connections I have formed with my students. I analyzed observations of my current teaching practices and my elementary report cards and test scores. After observing my students’ interactions among their peers and my reaction towards their conversations, I found …

Adding An International Student’S Voice To The Pandemic Discourse As Thinkers, Not Subjects: Reflections On Power, Stillness And Humanness, Sarah Jane Lipura 2021 Ateneo de Manila University

Adding An International Student’S Voice To The Pandemic Discourse As Thinkers, Not Subjects: Reflections On Power, Stillness And Humanness, Sarah Jane Lipura

Korean Studies Department Faculty Publications

As of this writing, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international higher education is continuously being documented, drawing enough, if not too much, attention towards international students. However, the voices of international students remain muted such that much of what has been said about their experience do not directly come from them but from those who claim to speak on their behalf. In this essay, I attempt to add an international student voice to the pandemic discourse by shifting attention to international students not as subjects but as thinkers and co-producers of knowledge in their own right, in hope …

Abstract
The materials presented in this book were developed for an advanced-level content-based Russian language course at Portland State University entitled “Russian Literature of the Twentieth Century: The 1920s.” Literature of this period is a major part of the Russian canon, but is notoriously difficult for learners of Russian to read in the original, due both to its stylistic complexity and the relative obscurity of its historical, political, …

Integrating L1 In L2 Classrooms: The Case Of Arabic As A Foreign Language In Us Universities, Martin Isleem

Faculty Journal Articles

For many years, instructors and scholars of the Arabic language in American high- er education schools have debated two pedagogical questions: (1) whether or not non-standardized Arabic varieties, Spoken Arabic, should be integrated with Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) in the foreign Arabic classroom, and if so, (2) what that integration should look like (see Al-Batal, 2017). One of the prominent claims of those favoring MSA in the classroom is that MSA is the more prestigious language variety and therefore better represents Arabic literature, religious tradition and culture (Ryding, 1995:226) However, in the last two decades there has been an evolving …

Discovering Identity With World Language, Constance Reynolds 2021 Kennesaw State University

Discovering Identity With World Language, Constance Reynolds

Emerging Writers

This article argues that teaching different foreign languages in schools opens the educational, mental, and universal benefits of language diversity and that the elimination of language diversity from schools hinders the development of students' identity, destroys curiosity, and delinks students from their heritages.

Perceptions Of Family Engagement Between African American Families And Schools: A Review Of Literature, Salandra Grice 2021 Texas A&M University

Perceptions Of Family Engagement Between African American Families And Schools: A Review Of Literature, Salandra Grice

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

The purpose of this review of parental involvement scholarship was to examine epistemologies and existent research pertaining to family engagement in the African American community. Particular attention is paid to the discrepancies between how African American families typically engage versus what teachers have been socialized to recognize and value as engagement. These discrepancies are evaluated and solutions to rectify this disconnect are discussed. Searches of major electronic databases were used yielding over a thousand results, yet only 20 pieces of literature proved substantive due to their specific focus on how African American families show involvement in their child’s education. Findings …

“Everyone Off The Ship”: Children Becoming Civic Minded In A Summer Literacy Program, Janet Isbell, Amber Spears, Cassie Schmitt-Matzen, Lindsey Braisted

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

Increased emphasis in recent years on reading and/or math achievement have sidelined social studies teaching in elementary education (Boyle-Baise, Hsu, Johnson, Serriere, & Stewart, 2012; Heafner & Fitchett, 2012; McMurrer, 2007; Shapiro & Brown, 2018). When teachers do address civics education, instruction typically sets up students for future citizenship duties, with a focus on rules and laws (Moyer, 1981; Swalwell & Payne, 2019). This traditional banking model of schooling (Freire, 1970/2009) makes children the receivers of knowledge and overlooks what they can do already (Swalwell & Payne, 2019). Efforts are needed to rethink “civics education as an emancipatory experience in …
