Student engagement, development of critical thinking, and fostering original ideas are among the many challenges of online course design. This concern is particularly pertinent for courses in humanities, where the lack of face to face interaction and group discussions needs to be compensated with other methods resulting in similarly successful learning outcomes. Since most of the communication and exchange of ideas in the online classroom takes place in discussion threads, designing intellectually stimulating and motivating discussion topics is instrumental for fostering students’ enthusiasm for the subject. The theme of Volume 31 of the Journal for Social Theory in Art Education – Critical Coalitions in Play – was developed at the Annual Business Meeting of the Caucus on Social Theory and Art Education, during the 2010 National Art Education Association, held in Baltimore, MD. The theme developed from casual conversations and formal discussions held throughout the conference, a process that has a longstanding history in the Caucus. Parents, Middle-Class-Ness, And Out-Of-School Art Education, Lara M. Lackey, David G. Murphy

This article explores the intersections of middle-class parenting practices and out-of-school art education. Drawing on the work of Lareau (2003) and Kusserow (2004) it argues that middle-class parents use a particular logic of parenting that involves the ongoing cultivation of children in hopes of promoting future security and life advantage. I argue that out-of-school art education is often taken up within this parenting practice in ways that serve the cultivation of both general and specific middle-class values.

Visual Arts And Literacy: The Potential Of Interdisciplinary Coalitions For Social Justice, Melanie L. Buffington, William Muth

In this article, we explore the possibilities of creating a coalition of the visual arts with literacy to work toward meaningful integrated learning experiences with a social justice agenda. We discuss the benefits of integrated curriculum and its potential to support learning at many levels. Following that, we introduce the Hope House mural project as an example of an integrated visual arts and literacy program. Through this project, children and their incarcerated fathers grapple with significant issues in their lives and to build a bond while doing so. Over the last three years the authors attended Brickworld Conventions for adult and teen fans of LEGO in Chicago. Through interviews, observations, and research they conclude that the LEGO brick is a medium replete with possibilities for creative construction and playful design beyond the expectations of its corporate producers. The history of the brick as a toy infuses play throughout its use, and the Internet provides a forum for adult and teen fans to communicate, critique, and discuss their creations. How does children's play with dolls and action figures engender exploration of gendered identities: from aesthetics and appearances, to social standards, and various rituals and performances? This paper examines recent research in art education and gender studies concerning dolls and figural toys marketed to girls. As an artist and teacher educator, I will draw upon my teaching experiences and examine artifacts of pedagogy from popular material culture. This study was conducted given as an inquiry about influencing attitudes toward people with developmental disabilities. Because resistance to homes for people with developmental disabilities situated in typical neighborhoods is still a problem, I seek a way to better assimilate people with "different abilities" into communities. For an historical foundation, I researched literature on the marginalization of this ethnographic group-people with developmental disabilities-and defined quality of life. This study utilized a survey of Virginia public high school teachers to examine how teachers understand multicultural education, how frequently they teach from this perspective, what cultures are represented, what teaching strategies they use, and what, if any incentives would encourage them to teach in this way more frequently. Through analysis of the findings, three major themes emerged which describe participants’ views of the purpose of multicultural education. These themes are “exposure” to other cultures, “understanding” of the way cultures interact and of the context surrounding a culture’s art, and promoting “equity” in the classroom environment and by encouraging students …

After my first years of teaching art within a school that perpetuated a deficit paradigm, I was one of two graduate students who taught with two professors in an alternative site at a community center with urban youth from ages 7-17 years. We enacted an assets model that sought to strengthen learners' artistic thinking. Side By Side : An Exploration Of Family Programs In New York City And Three Pilot Family Programs At Dia : Beacon, Jeanne Parkhurst

This independent study includes a review of literature about learning theories relevant to museum education, family learning, and family learning in museums. This exploration also includes observations done at six art museums in New York City. As a result of these observations I outline teaching techniques for "best practice" methods while also offering first-hand insight into the unique and complex dynamic of family learning in museums. Finally, I describe my process for developing and implementing three pilot family programs a Dia : Beacon, a contemporary art museum in Beacon, NY which is part of the Dia Art Foundation.

As faculty, we strive to develop methodologies to make more meaningful to students the concepts and principles taught in our courses. Over the years, growing literature has developed that supports the use of popular films, as well as documentaries, in college and university curricula. The purpose of this study is to gain understanding of the types and purposes of art museum educational programs, services and collaborative projects that have been developed by art museum educators for university audiences. Additionally, this study examines the challenges in creating and sustaining these educational experiences. This study presents results from an exploratory qualitative web survey administered to art museum educators from public, private, and university art museums. This study provides insight into the relationships between the art museum educators and the university audiences. This thesis analyzes the role of family guides in the family museum experience. Family guides are generally handheld pamphlets produced by the museum with the intention of supporting the family experience in the galleries. This study starts by sharing the results of my undergraduate work. After, I describe the preliminary process of contributing to a family guide at American Folk Art Museum. Lastly, I share my current research, in which I interviewed twelve families, asking them to speak to their museum experiences and compare and contrast four family guides.
