The aims of this study were: a) to discover which strategies community-based occupational therapists (OTs) find most effective for developing the competencies that have been identified as unique to community-based occupational therapy (OT) practice, b) to examine respondents’ perceptions of the effectiveness of their academic training and of current professional development resources, and c) to explore respondents’ suggestions for improving academic training and continuing education for OTs in community-based practice. Data collection was completed using an electronic survey that targeted members of the American Occupational Therapy Association who have experience in community-based OT. For our inaugural issue, we reviewed the feedback from our 2016 ETE faculty conference—an event for USU faculty hosted every August on the USU main campus. We identified several of the presenters who received high marks in post-session surveys and invited them to submit a proceedings paper for their presentation. Many responded, and their papers now comprise the majority of this issue. Because most of the articles began as stand-up presentations for a conference, several adopt a first-person narrative style in which the authors share examples of things they have tried in their teaching that have worked. The purpose of this ethnographic study was to examine and describe the lived experiences of seven students with intellectual disabilities (ID) participating in two postsecondary education (PSE) settings in Southern California that were aligned to the Think College Standards-Based Conceptual Framework for Inclusive Higher Education.

Through a qualitative approach of ethnography, the researcher examined various stakeholders’ awareness and ability to support students with ID in higher education settings in an effort to support future development of PSE programs for students with ID. Through a model of inquiry and collaborative learning, participants will learn about the structural and institutional features of oppression faced by gifted students. Participants will develop meaningful ways to apply their new awareness and knowledge at both the individual and institutional levels, creating a diversity plan including a diverse curriculum. The ultimate goal is to provide professionals with the tools and resources to ensure equity and promote an environment that is both diverse and inclusive.

Educating Incarcerated Youth In Illinois: A Blended Learning Model, John Sonnenberg

The purpose of this case study was to better understand the reasons behind the apparent continued success of a blended learning educational model in place since 2012 in the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ). Using a mixed methods approach, data were gathered and analyzed from a variety of records, reports, and other documentation that included: diplomas awarded, courses taken, course completion, enrollment trends, student mobility rates, GED testing information, and special education student enrollment and performance. This research reports on the beliefs of a select sample of women and men faculty across the USA regarding women in nonprofit organization academic programs. The main differences were on professional orientation among graduate students, difficulty with quantitative oriented courses, and portrayal of women in coursework. To eliminate these differences, beliefs (ideologies) among faculty and students need to be altered. Sanberg’s book Lean In is especially informative about changing beliefs about career orientation for both men and women to what she calls a belief in sustainable and fulfilling positions. This study found that more than 500,000 veterans are currently enrolled in post-secondary education (PSE), with more expected to enter as active duty deployment is scaled back, while there are three major challenges: repurposing their military experience, reconstructing their civilian identity, and navigating PSE. In practice, veterans enrolled in post-secondary education (PSE) should continue utilizing services available to them both on and off campus. In policy, policymakers might consider allocating additional funds to VRCs on university campuses, and the Department of Defense (DoD) might offer additional resources to transitioning service members to help smooth the process. To support the development of more supportive learning environments, Kolb’s Learning Styles Inventory (LSI) was used to assess learning styles in adult students of online, classroom, and combination learning environments. There were no significant differences in learning styles between learning environments in the sample population, though learning styles correlated with some demographic measures.

However, the effects of the downturn are still widely felt in parts of the world and across Ireland. Student affairs professionals (SAP) have been tasked to educate students and provide opportunities to develop skills to live in a culturally diverse and global society. The shortage of culturally competent SAP could hinder students’ abilities to gain intercultural competence. The purpose of this narrative non-fiction study was to understand how SAP’ study abroad experiences helped them to grow and develop intercultural competence. Furthermore, the study aimed to identify how intercultural competence shaped their practices and strategies to provide students with safe environments to gain knowledge and understanding about different cultures.
