The student bodies of universities are made up of a diverse financial class of students which utilize various methods to cover financial obligations on campus, even with the use of welfare governmental assistance. Low-income students that are involved in government welfare programs are given an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card to support them while they are pursuing an education; however, every university in San Diego, CA (and nearly the entire United States), segregate EBT into an unacceptable category and refuse to accept the card at any venues on campus. If a policy that is beneficial to most students nevertheless violates autonomy and harms even a minority of students in the process, then it should not be implemented. Banning laptops, requiring attendance, and other similar actions are beneficial to most students, but also violate autonomy and harm a least a minority of students to whom they are applied. Therefore, these policies, such as banning laptops and requiring attendance, should not be implemented.

This personal narrative explores the experiences of pain metaphorically as a gift. The intention of this article is to offer alternative ways to reflect on pain, life and taking risks to move from health literacy toward health agency with help. I describe my approach to decision making using the hermeneutic wager which provides a means to imagine possibilities while mindfully assessing risk. Learning to manage pain and learning to live well with pain is a gift that we are not always aware is within our grasp.

This capstone project analyzes a specific student population, the community college student, and how career services can impact their experience while in college. It examines online career services that prepare students for their job search while also increasing the office of career service’s presence on campus. Information gathered from the Career Services Coordinator (CSC) was used to determine what specific tools and strategy will support student’s efforts and maximize the CSC’s time. In 2016, a collaboration began between UNI faculty and students in service learning courses in the Department of Languages & Literatures and classes in English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) at the YWCA of Black Hawk County. Gamification is an emerging topic for both student engagement and motivation in higher education online courses as digital natives become post-secondary students. This design case considers the design, development, and implementation of a higher education online course using the ARCS model for motivational design combined with the four-phase model of interest development as a framework for gamification implementation. Through “designerly ways of knowing,” this design case explores engaging digital native students with a gamified online course design, which will be of interest to instructional designers and instructors in higher education. Utah Master Naturalist is an award-winning Utah State University Extension program that promotes stewardship of Utah’s natural world through place-based, experiential field courses across the state. Although successful in eliciting positive short- and long-term impacts, Utah Master Naturalist’s traditional five-day field courses were unavailable to many students and instructors due to constraints of time and location. This case study examines Utah Master Naturalist’s first hybrid course, Desert Explorations, and describes the positive results from our pilot study, how a hybrid course solves availability issues, and how field-based learning theories can be adapted to online education through careful design.

Written by a librarian and a history professor, this article describes a primary source literacy project for students. In addition, this essay reports the project’s effectiveness in teaching undergraduates to analyze information and develop primary source literacy. The methodology employed included a research project with 24 undergraduates, along with a pre- and post-survey. The research project and student survey incorporated principles from the Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy, published in 2017 by the ACRL’s Rare Books & Manuscripts Section and the Society of American Archivists. This article focuses on the impacts of technology integration among the senior citizen population, and sheds light on some of the daily struggles and issues older technology users encounter. It outlines possible solutions to these problems, including plans of action for seniors' adoption of new technologies. A combination of reflection gained through service-learning and insights from academic articles illustrates situations the senior citizen community may encounter that can cause grievances when using technology. The article explores the need for technology based educational programs for the senior citizen.
