Organization Restructuring And Leadership Development, Elizabeth Rogers, Danielle Wolf
Senior Honors Projects
The University of Rhode Island’s chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) has progressively grown as a student run organization throughout the past decade. During this period, the leadership team faced the challenge of engaging members and transitioning smoothly from year to year. These two issues were linked to the chapter organizational structure and the leadership transition processes, respectively. In order to improve and become competitive on a national level with other AMA collegiate chapters and marketing degree programs, it is important to continuously reevaluate the chapter’s strategy. This research aims to seek best practices that can be applied for …

Over the years, this program has exponentially grown, leading to our biggest year yet with two trips staying in Rhode Island and three out of state trips offered in 2017. In the past, the spring break trips were hosted by URI S.A.V.E.S and URI Habitat …

Warm Weather Leads To Safe Choices, Shilpa Madan

Consumers have different purchase journeys depending on the temperature, according to research; and not just when it comes to purchasing cold drinks.Writing for WARC, Shilpa Madan, an Associate at the Institute on Asian Consumer Insight (ACI) in Singapore, explains that outward bodily sensations, such as feeling hot in summertime, can influence the way consumers perceive people and things, and shape preferences and choices, without conscious thought.

Moral Traps: When Self-Serving Attributions Backfire In Prosocial Behavior, Stephanie C. Lin, Julian J. Zlatev, Dale T. Miller
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Two assumptions guide the current research. First, people's desire to see themselves as moral disposes them to make attributions that enhance or protect their moral self-image: When approached with a prosocial request, people are inclined to attribute their own noncompliance to external factors, while attributing their own compliance to internal factors. Second, these attributions can backfire when put to a material test. Studies 1 and 2 demonstrate that people who attribute their refusal of a prosocial request to an external factor (e.g., having an appointment), but then have that excuse removed, are more likely to engage in prosocial behavior than …

Examining The Decoy And The Phantom Decoy Effects On The Menu Item Choice, Yang-Su Chen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the modern foodservice industry, restaurant potential customers encounter a vast quantity of information that influences their dining choices. Using theoretical foundations of traditional asymmetrical-dominating decoy and phantom decoy effects, this dissertation empirically tested a variety of decoy and phantom decoy items applied to a menu and investigated whether these effects increase the attractiveness of the target item and further increase customers’ likelihood of choosing the target item, as well as their post-choice assessments. Two separate experimental designs that manipulated different decoy and phantom decoy conditions and customers’ familiarity with the food items were conducted.
The results of study 1 …

Digital Transformation And Value Creation: Sea Change Ahead, Srinivas K. Reddy, Werner Reinartz
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Digital transformation is taking place all around us and there is hardly a single aspect of life that has not been affected. In a traditional sense, digital transformation refers to the use of computer and internet technology for a more efficient and effective economic value creation process. In a broader sense, it refers to the changes that new technology has on the whole; on how we operate, interact, and configure, and how wealth is created within this system. It has become clear by now that the digital transformation has an obvious, lasting, and even revolutionary impact, not only on the …

The Impact Of Consumer Evaluation On The Cause-Related Marketing, Chia-Lin Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
Cause-related Marketing (CrM) has become an increasingly popular marketing approach over the past two decades. However, neither researchers nor organizations fully understand the determinants of a successful CrM partnership. This research fills this gap. Specifically, we employ the schema theory to explore circumstances in which the CrM alliance cannot achieve a success. We use a theoretical modeling approach to report that, when consumers’ typicality-based cognitive process is assumed, the CrM activity with the partners’ more-discrepant attribute profile cannot be evaluated favorably, but the attribute-level uncertainty about the CrM alliance is less likely to feedback to the two partners. Furthermore, we …

Despite the importance of the impact of network structure on the relationships between firms and firm performance, few studies have investigated these effects. This study investigates how network openness influences the relationships between TSI, opportunism, technological uncertainty, and supplier performance. We also try to figure out how network openness functions as a governance mechanism.

To Conform Or Not To Conform : Mixed Conformity Model, Yongjee Han

This study explores the influence of reference groups depending on the type (in-group versus out-group) and the size (an individual member versus a group as a whole) of reference groups. We propose a mixed conformity model, which suggests that people want to fit in with their in-group but at the same time they want to stand out within their in-group members. We found that in moderately identity-relevant product categories, people tend to diverge from individual members of their in-group while conforming to their in-group as a whole. However, in highly identity-relevant product categories, people conform to their in-group independent of …

Peer Effects In Service Usage, Sangyoung Song
Asia Marketing Journal
Researchers in marketing, sociology, and economics have been interested in the role of social interactions in consumer choice and consumption behaviors. Social interactions, labeled variously as peer effects, social contagion, and neighborhood effects, have important implications for firms’ allocation of marketing efforts. In this research, we test and provide empirical evidence for peer effects in consumers’ service usage in the context of gym-going behaviors. Using a detailed individual-level membership and attendance data at one of the largest health club chains in the U.S., we document that a focal member’s gym-going behavior is influenced by the behaviors and characteristics of the …

Gospel With A Groove: A Historical Perspective On The Marketing Strategies Of Contemporary Christian Music In Relation To Its Evangelistic Purpose With Recommendations For Future Outreach, Autumn E. Gillen
Selected Honors Theses
Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) is an effective tool for the evangelism of Christianity. With its origins dating back to the late 1960s, CCM resembles musical styles of popular-secular culture while retaining fundamental Christian values in lyrical content. This historical perspective of CCM marketing strategies, CCM music television, CCM and secular music, arts worlds within CCM, and the science of storytelling in CCM aims to provide readers with the context and understanding of the significant role that CCM plays in modern-day evangelism. This thesis will present CCM as an integrational religious style of music, meaning that it targets both Christian and …
