Monitoring Productivity And Quality Of Grass-Legume Pastures Under Irrigated Condition, L Tahtacioglu, A Mermer, M Avcy

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The performance of six grass-white clover mixtures were evaluated in winter cold zone of Eastern Anatolia. In combination with white clover, ryegrass (Lolium perenne L) cocksfoot, (Dactylis glomerata L) and smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss) were used in double and triple plant mixtures. Average DM production ranged from 7.5 to 10 t/ha , with no significant differences observed among the mixed swards. DM production of all mixed swards significantly varied between cutting periods and years. A gradual decrease in DM production was observed both from the first to forth cut and from the first to third year. …

Dry Matter Production And Nutritive Value Of Wild Alfalfa, C N. Shin 2024 Keimyung Junior College, Korea

Dry Matter Production And Nutritive Value Of Wild Alfalfa, C N. Shin

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Alfalfa grows wild in some parts of Korea, but specific information is lacking as to its agronomic characteristics, nutritive value and dry matter production potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of wild alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) as a forage. Wild alfalfa and Vernal were field sown at Keongsan, Keongbuk in the spring of 1995. Emergence for Vernal was better than for wild alfalfa. It was observed that the flowering date of the wild alfalfa was delayed by 8 days. Regrowth of Vernal was better than that of the wild alfalfa at each harvesting. After …

Quantitative And Qualitative Evaluation Of Legume Forage Species In Southern Italy, P Martiniello, V Laudadio, F Pinto, B Ciruzzi

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Legume herbage quality and quantity depend on genetic background to be able to sustain metabolic activity under increasingly harsh environmental conditions. Field experiments were carried out in Foggia, a southern Italian town (a typical Mediterranean location) on varieties and ecotypes of two perennial legume (sainfoin and sulla) mostly widespread in Mediterranean environments. The experiment compared irrigated and non-irrigated conditions and two different seed rates. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of agronomic factors on herbage production and the nutritive value of the forage. Irrigation and higher seed rate treatment increased dry matter yield in both species. …

Role Of Non-Traditional Forages In Livestock Production In India, Bhag Mal, J N. Gupta, J P. Singh

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The paper reports a number of non-traditional forage species which form the life support system for grazing animals in normal conditions as well as scarcity periods like droughts and famines. Such species vary according to climatic and ecological conditions of India. These species play an important role in domestic livestock production as well as providing forage to the game animals. In the arid region the majority of such species are small trees and shrubs; in semi-arid regions majority of such species are shrubs, aquatic weeds and minor millets. In temperate/alpine Himalaya such species range from lichens, ferns, climbers to shrubs …

The Role Of Leguminous Browse Plants In A Cool Mediterranean Enviornment, P A. Lane, R Reid, D Parsons 2024 University of Tasmania, Australia

The Role Of Leguminous Browse Plants In A Cool Mediterranean Enviornment, P A. Lane, R Reid, D Parsons

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

There is considerable scope for improving the productivity and persistence of pasture systems, in the temperate low rainfall zones (< 550 mm annual rainfall) of Australia and New Zealand. Alternative pasture species, including leguminous browse plants, have potential to increase the diversity and stability of these pasture systems. The genus Dorycnium (canary clover), has previously been identified as containing a number of species with desirable forage and soil conservation characteristics. Preliminary investigations have indicated that at least two species, D. rectum and D. hirsutum, produce significant quantities of forage in the year of establishment and are palatable to sheep. It is proposed that these plants may provide a valuable source of forage on land which currently lacks productive and persistent pasture. Forage produced by these plants would be allowed …

The Expression Of Rhizomes In Lotus Corniculatus L., P R. Beuselinck

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Broadleaf birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) is a popular crosspollinated, perennial legume cultivated for pasture, or hay and silage production. It does not cause bloat and can be managed to reseed to maintain stands, but significant losses occur when stands decline from disease. Wild birdsfoot trefoil with underground rhizomes was discovered in Morocco. This paper describes research to: 1) compare the morphology and anatomy of rhizomes with aerial stems, 2) determine if rhizomes could be successfully transferred to domesticated germplasm, and 3) determine the inheritance of rhizomes. Morphological and anatomical differences between rhizomes and aerial shoots of five accessions …

Gis And Genetic Diversity- Case Studies In Stylosanthes, P G. Jones, M C. Sawkins, B L. Maass, P C. Kerridge

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

We present a new technique for mapping the potential occurrence of wild germplasm based in climate data and show its application to six important Stylosanthes species. The method can be used to develop hypotheses as to the distribution for purposes of collection and/or in situ conservation. It can also be used to investigate genetic diversity with a species. We present some first results based in isozyme data from S. guianensis.

Evaluation Of Oat Genotypes For Forage And Seed Production In The Northeast Region Of Sao Paulo State-Brazil, R A. Reis, L R. De A. Rodrigues, T De J D. Rodrigues

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The DM production (DMP), chemical composition, and seed production of black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb.) and the yellow oat cultivars ‘UPF2’ , ‘UPF3’ and ‘UPF7’ (A. byzantina C. Kock.) were evaluated under two management systems: plants cut (60 days after sowing-DAS) and uncut for seed production. Oat genotypes were sown in 1993 and 1994. UPF7 was the least productive. No difference was detected (P > 0.05) in the cell wall composition of the genotypes. High values of CP (22.9%) and IVDMD (77.6%) were determined across all genotypes. In 1994, cutting at 60 DAS affected the seed production of the cultivars. …

Cold Hardiness Variation In Annual Medicago Species At The Seedling Stage, N Yahia, F-Z Fyad-Lameche

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The study was carried out on three annual Medicago species (M. polymorpha, M. aculeata and M. ciliaris) each represented by five populations. Cold tolerance of the accessions was tested using a laboratory chilling test on seedling growth and soluble protein content of acclimated and non-acclimated seedlings. Lots of 3-d-old seedlings were submitted to cold treatment for 48 and 96 hours. For each treatment, response was determined by measuring seedlings’ weight and height, and radicle length for both acclimated and non-acclimated seedling lots. Seedling growth was adversely affected by low temperature, and resistant cultivars had a better rate of …

General And Specific Combining Ability In Forage Maize Aptitude Part 2: Land Races, C G. Lopez, L M. Bertoia, R Burak

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Eight argentine land races of maize (1 to 8) were evaluated in a diallel mating scheme for ear, stover and total digestible dry matter yield. For the average of four environments, the crosses 1x2 and 1x4 do not show significant differences with the best check (Cargill Semiden 5) for total digestible dry matter yield. Using the Gardner and Eberhart diallel analysis only the sum of squares of cultivars for stover digestible dry matter yield was significant, suggesting that additive effects are very important in controlling this trait, while for ear digestible dry matter yield both additive and non-additive effects are …

Characteristics Of Selected Genotypes Of Brachiaria For Brazilian Pastures, C B. Valle, J R. Valerio, S Callixto, A O. Barcellos

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Brachiaria is a grass genus of African origin. Some genotypes have shown good adaptation to poor, acid soils and now cover millions of hectares of pastures in tropical America. In an effort to increase diversity for selection, CIAT led collection expeditions to East Africa and later distributed this germplasm to collaborating institutions. Agronomical evaluation of a Brachiaria collection of broad genetic base was conducted at EMBRAPA/CNPGC with the objective of selecting potential new cultivars. Multivariate analysis was used to classify 193 accessions of nine different species into 8 groups using annual and seasonal production, leaf:stem ratio and regrowth characteristics. Resistance …

A Multivariate Assessment Of Variation Within And Among Ladino White Clover Ecotypes, P Annicchiarico, E Piano

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Some 285 Ladino white clover genotypes selected from four ecotypes were multiplied clonally and evaluated in a replicated pot experiment over one year. Multivariate patterns of variation were depicted by principal component analysis performed on the correlation matrix of five morphophysiological traits, namely petiole length, central leaflet size, head production, number of florets per head and stolon density. Selection was based on high broad sense heritability values of all of these traits. The level of intra-population variation was so high relative to inter-population variation that almost all plant types possibe could be found within each ecotype, although at a variable …

Dry Matter Variability And Quality In Some Perspective Populations Of Some Agrostis Species, Zorica Tomic, Gordana Surlan Momirovic, M Stosic

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Important goals in forage grass breeding are improvement in forage yield and quality. The objective of this study was the examination of dry matter variability of autochtonous populations of three species from the genus Agrostis L. in order to choose the best ones for creating cultivars. Since we have not had domestic cultivars of these species so far, and it is known that they can be used for various purposes like cutting and grazing and having good quality, this research is made reasonable in many ways. The present results refer to the variability of genetic potentiality of the dry matter …

Conservation Of Grass Collections At The Western Regional Plant Introduction Station, V L. Bradley, R C. Johnson

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Germplasm managers at the Western Regional Plant Introduction Station (WRPIS) have focused on improving seed regeneration in forage and turf grass species through studies of diversity maintenance, using isozyme markers in annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and through studies of pollen isolation, using strains of dominant pubescent and recessive glabrous smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.). Balanced samples of annual ryegrass (an equal number of seeds per plant) from field plots were best for maintaining allelic frequencies, but genetic diversity (heterozygosity and allelic richness) was maintained nearly as well in bulk samples (seeds proportionally assembled according to seeds per …

Legume-Rhizobia Relationship In The Nitrogen Fixation Of A New Mediterranean Pasture Legume (Biserrula Pelecinus L.), A Loi, J G. Howieson, P S. Cocks, S J. Carr 2024 Co-operative Research Center for Legumes, The University of Western Australia, Australia

Legume-Rhizobia Relationship In The Nitrogen Fixation Of A New Mediterranean Pasture Legume (Biserrula Pelecinus L.), A Loi, J G. Howieson, P S. Cocks, S J. Carr

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Biserrula pelecinus (biserrula) is a pasture legume of Mediterranean climates. Because of its ability to survive on acidic and infertile soils, it has been introduced to southern Australia as a potential alternative or companion plant to serradella and subterranean clover. The successful introduction of this species will be reliant upon the selection of an appropriate inoculant strain of its root-nodule bacteria and understanding of its ecology. A selection of five rhizobial strains isolated from biserrula nodules collected in Sardinia and Greece were examined for their ability to nodulate and fix nitrogen with 3 genotypes of biserrula. Although all rhizobial strains …
